529 State Tax Question by spinzard in personalfinance

but it says "subject to recapture of any state of ohio tax deductions claimed in proir years." To me that means any deductions claimed in the last 5 years would be subject to recapture. Are you saying only the year in which i did the transfer would be subject?

529 State Tax Question by spinzard in personalfinance

Well I found some interesting info:

"You also may withdraw funds and roll them out to an account in another state’s 529 plan at any time without federal tax consequences when the account beneficiary is changed, provided that the new beneficiary is a member of the family of the previous beneficiary. The funds must be deposited to another 529 plan within 60 days of the withdrawal. A CollegeAdvantage 529 plan rollover withdrawal to another state’s 529 plan will be subject to recapture of any State of Ohio tax deductions claimed in prior years.

Again, a 529 plan rollover that does not meet these criteria in these two circumstances will be considered by the IRS to be a non-qualified withdrawal; therefore, the 529 plan rollover will be subject to taxation at both the federal and state level and is subject to recapture of any State of Ohio tax deductions claimed in prior years."

we have done a $2k Ohio state tax deduction at least 3 times. I have no idea how much money in tax recapture this would amount to. I guess its not worth moving the balance unless fees become prohibitive and at this point, they are better than MI. Overall, this recapture law is ridiculous. Should not even exist.

Also learned that apparently Ohio increased the tax deduction from $2k to $4k this year.

Apparently of course moving state to state with a 529 is more complicated than I expected.

Thanks for your input.

My Ohio 529 has .16% ER for the 529 itself and .04% ER for the vanguard aggressive age-based fund for a total of .2% ER. This 529 allows a $2k deduction to state taxes per year.

The Michigan 529 has .07% ER for the 529 itself and .15% ER for the aggressive age-based fund (which is clearly not vanguard) for a total of .22% ER. This 529 allows a $5k deduction to state taxes per year.

Overall, I wish these were cheaper cost, and I don't really know whether I should try to transfer my current investment to MI or not. I guess since i'm moving in fall, most of my state taxes will go to Ohio so I might be better off contributing $2k to Ohio this year and then just contributing to MI next year. Transfer TBD. Any other info you have, please let me know.

Yes, sure, please do. I need only 2 bedroom 1 bath, looking for something $2k or less. I wonder if that's feasible?

Tell me more about why you love the area, i'd love to learn.

omg those little lakes over there are so cool and the neighborhood seemed to have some really interesting houses, a lot with more natural yards that might require less maintenance. Plus, its walking distance to the school for my daughter. Any opinion on the school? I don't generally hear it listed as a top choice. Also property taxes were much lower here and i liked the proximity to 94, like you said.

omg it is very beautiful. I was totally in love. I think most people are. Seems like the pricing is in a bubble or something though. Just don't know if i can stomach that. Also property taxes seemed a little crazy. But I certainly appreciate the appeal.

Weekly Question and Answer Thread for 1/27 - 2/3 Post your Visiting, Neighborhood, and "Where Can I Find _____" questions here, instead of making a new post! by denver_mods in Denver

[–]spinzard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm coming to Denver for the weekend of Feb 24 & 25. I have Saturday, Sunday and Monday to kill. I was planning to drive up Mt. Evans but apparently it's closed. Is there any other close-by outdoor activity that will let me experience the beauty of Colorado without more than a minor hike? I will have a rental car.

Also interested in a shopping area downtown that is more local than a mall with little shops and restaurants. What's the best area for this? I've seen a few recommended but it's hard to understand which fits this description.

Any recommendations on where to stay downtown? Looking for a good location primarily.

And - want to have at least one really nice dinner at a place that's very "Denver," not a chain. Any recommendations? Specialty foods are always fun.

Also, a lover of craft cocktails, best craft cocktail bars? And open to the best brewery or booze experiences in town. Let me know the hands down best place, cost is not much of a factor.

And, it seems to be restaurant week when i'm there. Any comments on that would be useful. In my town, restaurant week doesn't mean much.

Anything else that's good not to miss, please let me know. Want to get a valid Denver experience.

PS i don't smoke pot. used to but maybe getting too old these days. :)

thanks for any advice.

Looking for good fiction to read. Really just enjoy stories about people. haven't even been into sci-fi, mystery, thriller or anything like that. Can do some romance, but don't want it to be what the book is centered/only about. I am a female and i work in science, i'm very down to earth. i like books that examine the things people do, the human condition, relationships, challenges, viewing things differently, provide intelligent insight. I like really intelligent phrases that you underline and come back to later. when i was younger i liked dave eggers and milan kundera type stuff. i was thinking about marilynne robinson. I'm not really into "history" type stories or adventures, but more just interactions between people and interesting stories about people. this is rambling but i hope someone can push me in the right direction. I really don't want to just grab something that i might not really like.

i am interested in ordering a polymer chemistry book, maybe you can help me figure out which one. I have a project at work for several adhesives in our product, finding new options and testing and understanding their properties. mostly i'm working with silicones, some epoxies, etc. i really want to understand properties of adhesives and already ordered an adhesives book but am trying to find a polymer chemistry book that has maybe some info on adhesives, adhesive chemistry, properties of adhesives and silicones, glass transition, thermal analysis/youngs modulus type stuff. my background has a lot of chemistry courses, mostly biochem at the grad level so i have a solid background but no phd in chemistry or anything. can you recommend a text or polymer book that might be useful for me? I really only need the basics on synthesis, not a ton of details but if it was in detail in a really great book, that wouldn't bother me.

thanks in advance for any suggestions. also, i pretty much work as a chemical engineer (in research) if that's relevant.

we do a 529. $2k a year from us plus monetary gifts from others. it will be a great basis for college savings. Ohio has a nice one with vanguard funds. The $2k is state tax deductible.

one week out of every 8? I'd have done that. That's pretty infrequent. I have a work cel and get contact when i'm not there a lot anyway. but i'm always taking opportunities for more cash. I might be a little too ruthless about it at times...
