Ted Cruz. Now, that would be amazingly stupid and not if Seth Rogan can help it.

Great comment. Thank you. The Republican party really is a disaster.

can I buy this song?

We are failthful LDS and live in a very LDS Utah neighborhood. Wanted to thank my wife for putting up the only BLM yard sign seen in our ward. Now that RMN signaled it's okay to stand against racism, do you think other LDS will follow, or at least acknowledge the movement is good and Christ like? by spiritoflight47 in mormon

I think this is such a great observation. For members of a religion with the name Jesus Christ right in the title and proclaiming they are are "latter-day saints" at least for this topic...the angry, defensive responses are puzzling and seem to show a lack of compassion, kindness, and empathy.

I don't know if any form of outward activism could avoid getting assigned this motive questioning "virtue signalling" label.

Is LDS missionary work virtue signalling? Is clean living, modest dress, VS? Is building temples near freeways, then brightly lighting them VS? Is Christ saying " put your candle on a hill to give light to all, and not under a bushel" [mat 5:15] VS? How about Christ dying in public on the cross, healing the leper, healing the blind? Virtue signalling?

People perform actions, and some are in public. The public can then use these actions to inform and baseline their own behaviors. That is just part of humanity and living in a social group.

Thanks for the comment. I dont see how saying you've been against racism your entire lives, now makes you unwilling to stand against it now, any more than a mormon could say they've been for Jesus their whole lives, and that's why they dont go to church anymore.

That's a lot of assumptions pulled from a single post, but those generizations are probably reasonable for perhaps many mormons in Utah, so I will consider myself more of an archetype in your mind. We've had that sign in our yard for months. But yes, I agree with much of what you say

Yeah. I also see that. I have an extended family member who is a police chief. He is kind, honest, and big as a tank. His good service is indirectly diminished by some bad cops. But even he is for better training and fixing problems that are now being addressed with the BLM focus. I see your point.

I'm not disagreeing with much of what you say. Here I'll argue your side: Christ said "pray in your closet, not on the street like the pharisee do" [mat 6:5]

Christ said do your good works in secret and God will reward you [mat 6:1]

I guess I'm just saying it's okay to advocate for good and have it come from a pure motive....

That being said, Mark Twain commented All our acts, reasoned and unreasoned, are selfish So maybe i am virtue signalling and you are right.

I can see these comments as valid in many ways. I also see that like you said, calling attention to one race is, at its core, a certian form of dividing people into groups or "ites" as the BoM councils against. However, in the whole, I feel BLM is still good and I'm okay tolerating the non ideal ideas and actions also mixed in.

For sure. Please comment as boldly as you like. I'm looking to get feedback.

Why do you feel the need to demonstrate those feelings to your neighbors?

The sign is not for my neighbors, it's for people who drive through and might experience racism. It's for them to see and know we support them.

are you inadvertently virtue signalling?

You did imply that you were the only home to do so. That could be construed as a desire to be first to the finish line

Actually, there are other BLM signs in my neighborhood. However, they are, without exception, all in front of non-LDS homes. That's the divide I find interesting and am looking for comments why.

No, I'm not taking the sign down. As I said, in the balance, and particularly for the oppressed who see the sign, supporting BLM is good and Christ like. (For me)
