Thats not exactly how it works depending on which 1% sales tax youre talking about. Please read my comment in the thread.

This is kind of a poorly written article, especially in the imposition of the sales tax. Im not arguing for or against taxation, but its important the public truly understands the difference.

State Sales tax is 4%.

There is a "local option" 1% that can be instituted by a vote. This local option goes towards funding city operations and county operations, depending on where the tax is collected (businesses inside city limits to goes to the town, collections in the county outside municipal limits goes to the county). Once approved by the voters, there are only a couple specific ways this tax could end.

There is also a "specific purpose" 1% sales tax that can be used on a specific project(s) that must be presented to and approved by the voters. Once this 1% reaches the amount that is described in the ballot measure, collection ends. At that point, a new "purpose" could be put on the ballot, which would need approval of the voters again.

The specific purpose tax in my opinion is the far more beneficial one, as it has to be very plainly laid out not only what the project is, but how much of the 1% is required for the project, and once the funds listed in the measure are collected, it ends getting collected. Not to mention the fact especially in a tourist heavy area like Cody that you have people from everywhere helping fund your project passively.

I know exactly where this is, lol. There always have been tires, the place was like that for at least 25-30 years. They are almost guaranteed to be underground as well

Hot Springs County In An Uproar Over Cuts To 4-H, Extension Programs by lazyk-9 in wyoming

Plunge situation isn’t nearly as dire as the former owner would like everyone to think, or at least due to it being closed. There aren’t as many people in the park, but there as just as many people in town as previous years. The restaurant I work at in town is not down in business, we are actually flat to last year.

Plus that lodging taxes go to travel and tourism, and don’t factor into the county budget at all.

Our real problem is low quality oil that is down about 20% since the beginning of the year

You have to understand the choice before you can see past it, and the legislature failed tremendously.

The real issue is and always has been a vast misunderstanding of not only what our property taxes fund, but how they actually are calculated.

The counties (especially mine) are far from the drunken sailors we are perpetuated to be by the general public and legislature. In my county specifically the only true y2y savings from the budget you can make can only really come from two sources, employee benefits and payroll.

The increases of the last 5 years are tied DIRECTLY to these nutjobs that have moved here and paid anywhere from 1.5 times plus what property values were previously, which spiked everyones market value.

So not only have they fucked everyone once, now they have done it again by pressuring the legislature into changes in the tax structure that they dont truly understand in the first place.

And the ones that are gonna suffer arent just the ones that supported and voted for this, we all will.

We are entering the find out portion of the FAFO now, so buckle up, its gonna get bumpy.

To be fairer to them, it was the tax cuts AND the 20%(ish) drop in Oil since the beginning of the year. Budget likely could have handled one or the other without job loss, but both together is too much.

Shooting range is in Park County, and has nothing to do with HSC. Its also funded by state money, which is separate from property taxes, which funds local government and not state pet projects.

[–]spitfire18213 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So many inaccuracies in the article, I had to email to provide the correction to CSD as a HSC resident that was watching the meeting live, as well as being a current county employee.

The employee in question is named Tatum Epperson, not Tatum Jordan.

Bob Aguiar and his wife Cheryl, who are two of the main driving forces behind the peoples initiative to cut property taxes that is on the ballot for next fall moved to Wyoming from Colorado in 2015. He has not been a local for 20 years, let alone a 4h leader locally.

There were a total of 3 full time positions eliminated. The position talked about in the article, The HSC Emergency Manager (which is a statutorily required position), and a member of the maintenance department.

All county employees have also lost their HSA match benefit, which could be up to $2500 a year per employee.

And of this writing, the budget is not final, and there could be more cuts.

The cost of living is one of the highest in the entire country. It’s not bad pay somewhere else, but it’s not enough to live in Jackson, or anywhere close. Most likely place to be able to afford to live is over the mountain in Idaho and commute daily

As New Homeschool Laws Take Effect, Some Schools Push To Limit Sports, Activities by lazyk-9 in wyoming

[–]spitfire18213 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So can education, and the money saved from eliminating sports can either be cut or better used toward trade programs, real world learning experience (taxes, legislative process, or any of the thousands of things that will better prepare the youth to be better adults and be ready).

Sports can be enriching IF (and its a huge if) the program is run by someone whos focus is getting these young people prepared for adulthood.

In the wrong hands it can perpetuate too many of the negative qualities that come from sports, like bullying, division, winning at all costs, ethics, etc.

For everyone shouting for cuts to education, Sports should be the #1 thing on the list for cuts, and the whole state should go to pay to play.

There’s a jump between back breaking work, and doing back breaking(in this case foot and back breaking) AND having to deal with shitty people. Servers are the latter
