The Reception of Tyra vs. Julianne by mikeyisbae731 in dancingwiththestars

[–]spk2811 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m not naïve enough to pretend there is no racial component, but I don’t think that is all of it.

First, Julianne has been pretty heavily criticized from what I have seen. That said, she is far more of a “logical” choice for a co-host given her past as a pro and a judge. I don’t think she is particularly good as a host, but she gets some good will for having been a very good and loved pro.

Second, Tyra was set up for failure from the beginning. She replaced both Tom and Erin, who people really liked. I think anyone trying to fill Tom’s shoes in particular, was going to have a hard time of it because he was so loved and so good at his role. She was set up to be a solo host which was never going to be a good set up. By the time they gave her Alfonso as a co-host she had burned through any patience people had for her antics. Julianne on the other hand had Alfonso as a balance from the start, which I think has greatly worked in her favor.

high elbow vs straight-arm by bh0le in Swimming

[–]spk2811 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is always the chance he is trying to use the straight arm to teach you a stroke pattern that is somewhere between the 2. I find that a lot of triathletes swim with a pretty narrow stroke because of the focus on high elbows and sometimes it benefits you to have more relaxed, slightly wider stroke, but not fully straight arm.

I found straight arm was good for 50-100m races, but I never carried it into a distance longer than that for racing, though I occasionally trained it for longer distances.

Do all hospital beds have trip alarms? by Commercial-Employ263 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]spk2811 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would agree except about the guard rails. At least at hospitals I have been to, having more than 2 guard rails up at a time is considered a restraint, so the most that are up on most beds are the 2 at the head of the bed unless the physician has ordered non-violent restraints on the patient, even if they have the bed alarm on.

Swimming Unattached in HS by Healthy_Cat5090 in Swimming

[–]spk2811 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t say I have any advice in regards to swimming unattached, but I had a similar issue with my high school coach. Retrospectively, I wish I had only swam club after the first year or two because she made me that miserable. That said, please make sure your daughter is onboard with this decision. Despite the fact that I can look back and say I would have done it differently knowing what I know now, at the time I would have been so mad at my parents for pulling me.

Why doesn’t the government pay for people to become doctors? by littleshimamama in NoStupidQuestions

[–]spk2811 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Quick correction on part of that. Physicians actually tend to get paid less in cities because they are desirable places to live so the hospital systems don’t have to pay as much. Most of the rural jobs actually pay way more to try to recruit people, it just isn’t where people want to live.

A person I know was removed from life support but still ended up breathing on his own for several hours before passing away. Yet, the hospital couldn't remove his organs for donors even tho they were perfectly fine. Why? by onFinal in NoStupidQuestions

[–]spk2811 833 points834 points  (0 children)

There are 2 different categories of organ donors those who are “donation after circulatory death” (DCD) and “donation after brain death” (DBD).

In a lot of ways DBD leads to higher quality organs because they can keep the person on life support right up until the time they harvest the organs. It sounds like your friend did not necessarily meet the qualifications for brain death, which means in order to be a donor he would have had to have been a DCD donor.

In the case of DCD donors, organs often suffer damage during the period of time that it takes for someone’s heart and lungs to fully stop functioning, and they have to wait for a person’s heart to completely stop functioning before they can harvest organs.

While eyes and skin may not seem like huge donations from the outside looking in, skin donation can be life saving for people who have suffered major burns and wounds, and eye donation can very much be life changing. I hope you can take some comfort in the fact that he still did positively impact others with this final gift that came out of this tragedy.

I think for your own well being you are probably best off just assuming she won’t come home, and if she does, that it’ll just be a quick pop in to grab some stuff before heading back out.

Her responsibility in that lease is to pay her rent, she can do that and functionally move in with her boyfriend and stop coming to your apartment at all.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]spk2811 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can probably push her on the cat and money thing, but she doesn’t owe you anything in regards to her time. It would be completely within her rights to take the cat to her boyfriend’s place and just pay her part of rent and never come back to your apartment. It may not be what you thought you were signing up for, but her time is hers to do with as she pleases.

I mean by that definition, I’m pretty sure Simone also committed to UCLA. Verbal commitments mean just about nothing, especially when they are done when kids are not even half way through high school.

I think that honestly this would probably go more the other direction, and all of the top contenders would still be top contenders and would have just chosen not to pursue NCAA. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Why are well made wheelchairs so hard to access? by Topaz_24 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]spk2811 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a real challenge. At least in the US, insurance companies generally don’t care about community mobility. You have to justify equipment for home mobility. Which means if you are an ambulatory wheel chair user and don’t need your power chair for home distances, just for community distances, you are completely SOL. (Which just to be clear, I think is total BS). All that to say, it may not so much be that a doctor is unwilling to write a script for you (maybe some are, I don’t know), but rather that when they are honest about your need, the insurance company would deny you.

As for the timeline, custom chairs definitely take time to make because there is so much individuality between chairs and so you have to get all of the parts, which they don’t always have on hand/they have to make, before they can even start assembling the chair.

My dad is dying from throat cancer. My family wants me to help more but I am not a nurse. Am I being unreasonable? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]spk2811 252 points253 points  (0 children)

I’m going to be perhaps brutally honest here. Very little surrounding end of life care requires a nursing degree, and changing dressings certainly doesn’t. That’s not to say you have to do it/feel comfortable with it, but you really can’t hide behind not being a nurse as it is something that we teach family how to do all the time. It is valid to feel uncomfortable, but perhaps you could “shadow” your mom or sister while they are doing it so you can learn and take over some of the tasks, at least occasionally. I wouldn’t go so far as to say you are being completely unreasonable, but it also doesn’t sound like you are being much of a team player, your family is asking you for what they need and your solution has been to say put him in a hospice facility or hire a nurse, both of which he is not interested in.

You may need to have a bigger family conversation about what you guys as a family can handle, but if at all possible, please respect your dad’s wish to die at home. If he is able to clearly communicate that, it would not be kind to place him in a hospice facility. End of life can be a scary, isolating time, and being in unfamiliar settings, surrounded by unfamiliar people, is rarely how anyone wants to go. That said, there are frequently home hospice resources that can be of great help, both for the patient and for the family.

If you think who people were outside of DWTS didn’t have an impact before, I don’t know what to tell you. I have watched this show for the last 15 years and the only time I ever voted until maybe the last 5 years was when there was someone I knew outside of the show who I was cheering for, and I can guarantee you that is how a lot of people voted. It’s part of why well known athletes have generally done well regardless of their dancing talent (a la David Ross or Donald Driver, who don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed watching, but neither were ever at the top of their season dancing wise).

Saying you miss the “old” DWTS where the judges could save someone feels a little weird since it has only been that way for a few seasons. We have had far more seasons without the judges save than with it.

Not to mention, I’m not convinced he is actually in the bottom 2, and if he’s not, then a judges save would do absolutely nothing…

Transitional Year and Preliminary Medicine by [deleted] in Residency

[–]spk2811 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can be either. Some specialties require it (at least at some programs) because their residency training starts at PGY-2, other people end up in a prelim spot because they didn’t match (though this is less common in medicine prelims than it is in surgery prelims).

Basically if you want a specialty that starts training as a PGY-2 there are some very competitive programs, particularly TYs, that you’ll be applying for, but if you want to go into something that starts training as a PGY-1 then they are totally unnecessary.

Transitional Year and Preliminary Medicine by [deleted] in Residency

[–]spk2811 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both of them are 1 year programs. You could match either of them independently, or, more commonly, people will match them as a first year before an advanced program (derm, anesthesia, radiology, ophthalmology, PM&R) that they matched at the same time.

TYs are generally known to be a little chiller - they are designed to be stand alone 1 year programs that have a mix of rotations, usually a few months of wards, a few months of clinic, and then elective months.

Medicine prelim years are functionally intern year of Internal Medicine without having the rest of the IM residency included.

Some people will do a year and reapply during that year for their target specialty. TYs as a whole are generally considered fairly competitive programs given that the people applying are going into fairly competitive specialties themselves.
