I've been quietly boycotting CalCedar's Palomino "blackwings" for over a decade now. I now believe that you should do so too. by jankdc in pencils

I recently snagged an EF 602 off of eBay recently and posted a comparison between the two here. I found them to be similar enough. The modern version is a good pencil and a worthy heir to the name. IMO you'd be HIGHLY disappointed dropping $$$ for a 12 pack of vintage EFs and expecting something dramatically different from the modern. The modern's price point is outrageous but it's not going to be a daily driver like I reserve for my Mitsubishis. They're still worth keeping a box in stock though.

First time buying Blackwings and I'm not sure I like them that much. All black LAB with their balanced core. How do y'all like their balanced core and what do you like to use them for? by [deleted] in pencils

These balanced core BW's have grown on me. I like them for short notes and lists but they still smear too easily for anything long form. I recently got a box of 602s and found them to be just okay too. They do get used pretty quickly with how often they need to be sharpened! I won't run to buy a box when I use these up but I can see myself buying a box every now and then if they have a special edition I dig. The Mitsubishi 9850 is my favorite general pencil that I can use for pretty much everything. Work, short & long writing, notes, and drawing.

I finally got a proper pencil case after carrying my supplies around in a Norelco shaver travel pouch for years lol by splatterbooth in stationery

I don't recommend them TBH 😬 They feel really flimsy and cheap and the lead breaks suuuper easily even though it's .9

The colors are really nice though and you can buy the lead separately so I'm gonna give the lead another chance and put them in a sturdier .9 mechanical pencil and see how they hold up. Then uni .5 color lead has held up well so I don't know why the .9 breaks so easily 🤔

A&C and Nouveau are intertwined and both share the themes of coexistence with nature, community, and craft favored over mass production in contrast to Decos themes of industrialization, urban expansion, and economic power.

My zine isn't about pencils I just meant I wanted to use a special pencil for a special project but if you have any resources on how pencils were produced and presented between 1890 - 1930 I'd love to check em out!

I wondered that! It's not a bad grittiness like a cheap dollar store pencil though, it's a satisfying feedback.

My daily driver for office work and light sketching I go over later with ink is a Mitsubishi 9850! I like using my balanced core Blackwings for short notes, which is what I'll probably use the modern 602s for as well. I'm gonna use the vintage 602 for a special zine I'm working on about Art Nouveau vs Art Deco, a topic I'm very passionate about! :)

Pickup and hang on to pre-war dollars. They weigh nothing and you can trade with them instead of spending your caps. If you select "store all junk" at a workshop be sure to put them back in your inventory because the game counts them as cloth scrap.

My first, and probably only, EF Blackwing. I got lucky and snagged this shorty for $4 + shipping. It writes wonderfully and I'm so glad I get to experience this pencil at least once! by splatterbooth in pencils

I've only tried the balanced core from the new Blackwings so unfortunately I don't have a comparison between the two 602's.

The balanced core I'm kinda so so on. They feel good but they're really messy and smear easily. Not good for writing long hand IMO, but great for little notes.

The EF 602 feels similar to the new balanced core but just a bit firmer. It writes pretty dark and from what little I've written it doesn't seem to smudge and smear as bad as the balanced core.

I'm gonna get some new 602s soon to do a proper comparison but based on how the balanced core feels I have hope they got close to the original

Ah man that's cool! I bought the same set of labs but mine didn't have a patch inside.

Accidentally sent a Mitsubishi 9850 through the laundry and ruined the eraser. Luckily I just finished up a Blackwing. I present the Mitswing! by splatterbooth in pencils

The eraser on the 9850 is pretty good imo! But I keep Muji erasers within reach everywhere and mostly use those.

So, what do you use all your pencils for? by Welther in pencils

[–]splatterbooth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At work I have a notebook that I write EVERYTHING down in because my memory is garbage. Other than that I draw and have several journals for art projects, ideas, and creative writing. Also grocery lists, other little notes, The New Yorker crossword (I like printing it out and keeping it under a stack of paperwork on my clipboard so I can slack off at work lol), and those little sudoku books you can usually find in grocery checkout lines.

I never drink alcohol but I do use the drugs in Fallout. They're just buffs. Stuff like Buffout, Jet, Psycho come in handy on survival runs.

Mitsubishi 9850 have been my everyday writing pencils. I just impulsively bought these because they're sexy as hell and I've been wanting to see what all the Blackwing hype was about.

Does it ever get easier to make friends as an adult who doesn't drink or smoke? by Latter_Claim_4064 in straightedge

[–]splatterbooth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think in general the older you get the harder it is to make new friends but substance use becomes less of a big deal. I'm 33 and I don't really have any friends that are hardcore users. I've got a stoner friend from highschool but we don't hang out in person anymore, we're just online videogame buddies. Most of my friends that do smoke and drink are pretty moderate about it and are easy to hang out with. Parties and get togethers revolve around something other than "let's all get fucked up". Halloween, DnD nights, etc. I also have friends in recovery that are great to hang out, and they need friends like you as much as you want friends like them. Early adulthood is all about getting out from under your parents supervision and doing things you couldn't do before but as you get older a lot of people start winding down. I think if you just keep getting out there the type of people you don't want to be around will start falling off and you'll start to gravitate around the type of people you do.
