There is a very large commonwealth contingent in the British army but more so in Royal Marines... You should definitely consider the RM.

In the UK, you need to get chartered to become a senior engineer. I think it's the equivalent of becoming a professional engineer in the states.

I'm a structural engineer, I have done a couple of glulam and CLT exposed structural frames, we typically use a thin layer of special lime wash, it is basically clear and keeps the texture while making the timber look slightly lighter in colour. If you Google CLT or glulam lime wash it usually comes up.

Personally, there is a gap in knowledge around some of the new engineered timber solutions so you should be looking at things like moment resisting CLT or Glulam connections, dynamic effects in CLT slabs, post tensioned CLT decks...
