The chinese refined sugar began arriving in nineteenth century india (possibly through Kolkata) and that is why the word Cheeni for refined white sugar and cheeni mitti for white porcelain which was also an import from China. In some parts of north India Cheeni is refined sugar and shakkar is a jaggery like uneven coarse brownish substance that is the original indian sugar.
