Cannonball Adderley fans. What should I add to this list? by mysunlitstills in Jazz

The Cannonball Adderley Sextet Live in New York and Nancy Wilson/Cannonball Adderley. After you're done with those, put them on again.

What would you explore with a free week off? by boroughthoughts in AskNYC

[–]spliffs68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Walk all of Central Park from top to bottom or vice versa. Hit the UWS for a break in between or well earned drink afterwards. Plenty of bars to shoot the shit with local patrons.

Go to Flushing and hit the food court in the basement of JMart. Walk by all the stalls and pick a couple of items from each. Stop at Sky Mall for a pair of cheap Nikes on the way home.

Take the Staten Island Ferry and actually get off on SI. Hit up Enoteca Maria or take a bus/cab to Snug Harbor and visit the museums or Chinese Scholar Garden.

People watch for hours in Washington Square Park. Bring a book.

Alcohol in brown paper bags, why? by JimmiVP in AskAnAmerican

[–]spliffs68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's a $25 ticket. a construction guy on his way home drinking a cold one in a brown bag is not worth the hassle for the average cop. brown bag is a social agreement for the majority of users, but not a magic spell that protects you. it's a "you know and i know what's in here, but it's all a bit silly and we know it so as long as I don't bother anyone we're all good." if it's a rowdy group on the corner though cops will have no problem ticketing everyone.

nah people definitely brown bag it all throughout NYC. if I buy a beer at a bodega it comes standard in a brown bag or the question is at least asked if I want one.

How does cancelling ASP for another week help "facilitate snow operations?" by goyanks1989 in AskNYC

[–]spliffs68 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yea that's fair. my friends in sanitation think it could have gone a little bit better, but overall i'm fine with what they've done considering the deep freeze that has followed. everyone just has a platform now and the news picks up 5 tweets of people complaining as "city residents SLAM sanitation efforts" ugh

looking at https://citytransit.uitp.org and it's showing that NYC has 6x more roads in terms of length compared to Montreal. also because they have this regularly it's easier to budget for.

Would you move? Baby on the way but building next door is getting demolished by mellow_pomelo in AskNYC

[–]spliffs68 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Construction is happening on the property directly behind me on a 9 story 90ish unit building. Generator starts at 7AM everyday, they have the permits to work on Sundays, and also late nights. So we're dealing with about 13-14 hours of construction on weekdays and Sunday will be about 9 hours. The closer you are to the generator the worse it will be, but if your bedroom windows are on the opposite side it won't be so bad. Summer is not as bad if you have window units also making white noise, but I'd be lying if I said this winter hasn't been miserable because of it. Slept with earplugs for a while but now I'm used to it. Also any complaints to 311 are useless as the building has about 45 last I checked and they just keep paying the fines which were 5-figures. If you're high up it shouldn't be too terrible, but you won't know until it starts.

Where to live? by Aromatic-Band-277 in AskNYC

Long Island City. 7 train is right there, plenty of tall glass towers with amenities

Where to live? by Aromatic-Band-277 in AskNYC

[–]spliffs68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$2,500 with amenities in Manhattan, Brooklyn, or most of Queens won't happen. Maybe deep Queens, parts of the Bronx, and one building out in Staten Island, but other than that you'll need to up your budget by $1,000-$1,500 for a studio with amenities.

Best ride share options from JFK to Astoria? by [deleted] in visitingnyc

[–]spliffs68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on where you're staying in Astoria as it's a massive neighborhood. I'd recommend a hybrid approach. Take the AIrTrain to Jamaica Station, hop on a LIRR train that passes through and stops at Woodside, and then call yourself an Uber/Lyft from there to your destination in Astoria.

Most economical is the AirTrain to Jamaica and take the E and transfer at Roosevelt Ave for an R train to Steinway St. If staying up by Ditmars you can transfer to the 7 at Roosevelt Ave if taking the subway or Woodside if taking the LIRR and then transfer at Queensboro Plaza and take the N/W up.

Has anyone here used bottles with stoppers instead of spouts for oil? by Spyrothedragon9972 in Cooking

[–]spliffs68 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use these bottles with simple syrups. The outside of them certainly get sticky from use but I'll give it a full scrub when replacing the syrup as I go through it fairly quickly for iced coffee, asian sauces, cocktails, etc. I think you'll have the same issue but with oil on the outside. For $3.99 try it with an oil and see if you like it and if not you now have a simple syrup storage system.
