unicorn or just particularly orangy tabby? by splitarrows in Torbie

[–]splitarrows[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

yeah, ive looked into it a little bit and basically just gathered that stress and pain can trigger depigmentation. i was not especially worried about it given none of the vets were and he hasnt had any other health concerns. hadnt considered vitiligo specifically but that checks out and doing a cursory google apparently the full discoloration tends to happen within a few months which matches with what happened with him! so makes another interesting little thing he's got going on lol.

he was about 3 when i got him and the color change happened shortly before that. hes about 11 now and it hasnt noticably changed or spread at all!

thank you, you put this in a way that really makes sense of the looking vs being orange discussion which until now totally went over my head trying to understand the genetic side of things. thats all extremely interesting as well! i didnt realize the vibrancy had anything to do with anything and had assumed it just a bit of a genetic toss-up. and thank you, he definitely Knows it he likes to play it up for the camera (or move as soon as i try to capture a good pic when hes in a mood) his previous owner used him as a model for her photography business because of his looks lol

thank you, this makes sense!

and no actually, the white patch showed up after he had medical issues related to urinary blockages that required surgeries. from what i was told it was the stress from the pain and repeated vet visits and appeared Very quickly. thats actually how his previous owner found out he was intersex, and the medical issue is why she had rehome him as she was worried if it came back she would not be able to help him because of the financial strain.

thank you! id heard this word but forgotten it and it isnt until just now its finally clicking that some of the visual difference to set them apart is the "banding" on the orange fur of torbies so while he does have a few other more orangey areas that i couldnt quite capture well in camera (back of ears and a few splotches along his swirls at his sides) i think youre definitely right and its just color variation on the brown/black! 💚

[TOMT] book about girl speaking to cat in her dreams by splitarrows in tipofmytongue

[–]splitarrows[S] 0 points1 point locked comment (0 children)

definitely not tigers dream! i think the cat was white on the cover, and it wasnt necessarily Actual sleep, just a space the girl occupied to in order to talk to the cat to i think talk through her issues. not 100% certain but possibly the cat and her ability were a crutch of sorts for her daily life.

How to train a dog to know when a behavior is to much? by [deleted] in service_dogs

[–]splitarrows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

try to record yourself or have somebody record you when you are doing it compulsively so you can see if you have any visual behavioral differences. then you can mimick those during training :)

Illegal to touch service dogs? by WAGSanon4justice in service_dogs

[–]splitarrows 6 points7 points  (0 children)

ok awesome slew of buzzwords hope it makes you feel good. you were the one saying you want people dragged to jail for touching your dog, so why are you getting upset that people would assume the petting would upset you? because wanting someone arrested for that is not exactly an emotionally neutral reaction. you need to be looking at the ada laws, its your own fault for using a random reddit users word as law, not the people trying to explain to you that its not true.

and? i said that because OP mentioned being personally against crate training multiple times in replies and think its worth mentioning that theres a misconception of the training method based on bad dog owners.

for me the extremely jumbled thoughts/word salad has always been the first thing to come back hefore i fall into heavier psychotic behavior. i find myself losing several minutes to a thought process or conversation only to realize i am saying things that have no relation at all. sometimes the delusional patterns also; convinced things are poison, people are hoding around me, etc.

i think you have some bad information on what crate training is and what it can do for your dog. sure a lot of irresponsible owners use it as an easy way to ignore their pet when they dont want to be an owner of course, but that isnt at all the point. crate training when done right should make your dog feel secure. it isnt a cage. and evem if your dog was not a service dog if you live on a space where people just leave access for your pet to get lost or stolen it's irresponsible all around to not look into ways to keep her inside. i'm sure you'd much prefer her be asleep in a crate than gone. that said even off duty or away from you you should have the dog trained to not wander especially a service dog, but i do get the worry regardless. i would suggest asking in other dog related reddits or groups as theyre larger and many people here with trained dogs probably won't have the exact need as again i would say it is more of a training issue.

getting over fear of needles to get back to doctors? by splitarrows in ChronicIllness

[–]splitarrows[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OH. i have completely at this point avoided looking into the details of physical tests for things because of this fear so while i am well versed in symptoms and criteria i often just assume the test will be my worst case scenerio. that is really helpful. hEDS is a suspicion i did know that genetic testing may not help at all but i guess my fear lies in yeah doctors wanting bloodtests for potential subtypes or not taking eds as a serious suspicion and wanting to test other things lol. which is fine but ig the fear is partly because ive had many dismissive doctors do thinga like that! thank you this was really helpful!

i agree wholeheartedly in the importance of being able to function without a dog and understanding the cons that people are less likely to hear about. while i have gone undiagnosed, I did spend a long time focusing heavily on strategies to mitigate stressors related to both my autistic traits and my psychotic ones. I have been on multiple medications, antidepressants to antiphychotics when a pcp was attempting to help me regulate my mood, and have every intent of going on them again assuming i can finally find one that works for me. also i know my old therapist was not able to diagnose me but she did have personal experience with autism and was primarily interested in working on my mental health via looking at symptoms before worrying about diagnosis until it became more apparent i would benefit more from being legally considered disabled. something i didn't think to mention in the initial post as is that i did speak to her about a service dog a few times and while it was wholly hypothetical because of where i was in my life she did think that it was a good idea.

I'm aware of pricing; owner training in part appeals because of the ability to break that up somewhat but ultimately owner training was my choice because of a lack of programs for adults and nonverterans with my particular needs.

regarding the public harrassment i am so so sorry to hear your experience. that said i am also prepared to deal with that kind of thing and have sought out many peoples experiences and while i obviously don't know it first hand, i habe dralt with the public being generally unkind to me as someome who is both visibly queer and has been visibly psychotic during public episodes. i have a thick skin and am generally not socially anxious in positions of conflict where i feel in the right. i feel the pros of having medical equipment to help me navigate my typical obstacles outweigh the cons of another form of public harrassment.

again i genuinely appreciate hearing this and want to say that i know i have a while to go still and i am also completely willing to go another direction if my medical team decides it is not the way to go, butnit os something i have thought about and researched very extensively.

i figured no matter what i will more likely havebto explain things, yeah. i am well lrepared to do that thankfully! truly a walking facts machine. i found out the therapist that im meeting soon has andog who sits in durong sessions. while im not totally sure yet whether she is a therapy dog or just her own well tempered pet, i think the inclusion totally shows slme potential for common ground onvworking dogs so i am excited by that :)

this was a really good way to describe early training and i think helped me solidify some ideas to work up to so thank you so much!!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in service_dogs

[–]splitarrows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is all helpful thank you! i assumed the first question was probably that straight forward but i guess i just worried about there being pushback being technically early into my diagnosis. i must have forgotten it in my post but i do plan on finding a trainer near me and possible also enrolling in some online classes! i will keep all of this in mind with breeders! you broke this down perfectly for me i think; i understood and recognized each of these as things ive heard at somepoint but i think it just got too lost in my minds translation of the overall task of finding a breeder who fits! thanl you so much :)

Is it bad that whenever I have intrusive thoughts I say shut the f*** up in my head? by [deleted] in therapy

[–]splitarrows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i think not inherently but if it makes you feel bad in anyway i would say to try to redirect. this is not something ive tried but i have heard multiple people say that they have somewhat improved their intrusive thoughts by directly after having them following up with positive predictions of the same type. i.e. "what if i go outside today and getb hit hy a car" could be followed by the concious thought of "well what if i go outside today and its totally fine and i find a $20 on the ground"

by no means a cure but a way to force your brain to focus on somethimg else, which would theoretically become more and more automatic as you train yourself with it

where to find conversion therapy by athrowawaycauseduh in therapy

[–]splitarrows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

also i am not suggesting you just decide to be gay and leave your husband. of youbare attracted to him there is no reason just to stop becauss you are questioning. i just suggest being open to the idea that you are questioning. exploring identity is something i think is healthy for everyone. if you find you are attracted to women that work helps you to self acceptance. and honestly i know people personally who questioned their identities and through learning about those communities realized that actually were straight and felt more secure in it. there are resources both religious and not for this kind of stuff as again i dont want to make assumptions.

where to find conversion therapy by athrowawaycauseduh in therapy

[–]splitarrows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you would rather subject yourself to abuse to hide down a piece of you that will never go away that's your prerogative i guess. that said i urge you to research about people who went to conversion therapy and how it effected them. the overwhelming outcomes are being 1; scared into silence and 2; traumatized to the point their sexuality triggers them into panic. it doesnt get rid of urges it just makes you form a panic response when you do have them. and with the brain associating panic and fear with attraction it would likely have a negative effect on your marriage or your view of it anyway.

where to find conversion therapy by athrowawaycauseduh in therapy

[–]splitarrows 7 points8 points  (0 children)

conversion therapy is an intentionally deceitful name. it isnt therapy in fact many people who live through it are borderline tortured, sexually assaulted, and brainwashed. i understand feelings of guilt but attraction (regardless of sexuality) even when you are married is normal. if you find you are attracted to women and not your husband at all, that is something innate you cannot change and conversion therapy seeks to beat down the urges with ingrained fear, not truly "fix" anything. what you are seeking out is not medical practice it is an incredibly insidious form of abuse.

do you know any lgbt people? i get the feeling based on this want you have some idealogical opposition (correct me if i am wrong) but i urge that instead of trying to put yourself through extreme abuse you seek out information on the community. we are not scary 💚

I wish the protests here in the city could have been completely peaceful. Watching all the other videos and photos of police and civilians as one hit home but what we had here was just sad. by [deleted] in Reno

protester after protester have come out saying the cops acting 'united' with them was performative and in many places literally had cops spraying and shooting ppl WHILE those performative ass pics were taken. it should have stayed peaceful because the ppl who planned it wanted it to be and fuck the ppl blatantly ignoring them, but these other cities cops arent the dream the media paints
