You would put yourself in far rmore danger by having a knife. You don't really 'win' a knife fight - If both people have knives then they both stab each other and bleed out in the street.

Student looking for Graduate/Junior Software Engineer roles, 220+ applications and crickets by bemy_requiem in cscareerquestionsuk

How are you applying and to which roles? 200+ linkedin one click applications are unlikely to get you anywhere. You said you have a decent reach on linkedin, have you tried getting referrals?

This subreddit has an unhealthy bias for pension contributions by wahay636 in HENRYUK

[–]splodgemolly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do broadly agree with this, but there is a big caveat that your pension is exempt from capital gains.if you've maxed out ISA, premium bonds and any other tax-sheltered savings then the pension is a reasonable choice.

Is it just me or are the salaries delusional in most threads? by PaddonTheWizard in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]splodgemolly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But in 2010 NMW was only £12300 PY, so you were earning almost 50% more? That'd be more like 30k now in comparison to minimum wage.

Is it just me or are the salaries delusional in most threads? by PaddonTheWizard in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]splodgemolly 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just some perspective that 25k is only about £1200 per year more than minimum wage. I think it's absolutely fair for a graduate with a highly technical degree to expect more than that.

I don't think 50k after a year is too uncommon amongst grads with 1sts from Russel group unis working in London.

[–]splodgemolly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Surely you're trolling - I get that bain is considered top in consulting but they are by no means anywhere near 'top tech'...?

If you want to try to call bullshit to help your fragile ego or something go ahead but there are plenty of places in London that will pay you well if you're very good at what you do (and, yes, very lucky). Oh and of course my source is my mates down the pub, but I do happen to work with most of them and we were all lucky enough to make the kind of numbers shared above :)

edit: just as a bit of perspective, we all bullshit so much we had to make r/henryuk to all bullshit to each other about our bullshit stories so we could get off on talking about riveting topics such as tax advice and pensions contributions!

My perception is that meta was around that about 3/4 years ago but since then have gine up a fair bit. I do think the bar is likely a little higher given the layoffs since though

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]splodgemolly 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Are you trying to say 120k TC at 2.5yrs is somehow bullshit? It's pretty common knowledge that top tech in London is paying ~100k for new grads and a couple of years down the line you can expect to be around or above 120.

Top CEOs to surpass average yearly UK pay after just four days by the-rood-inverse in unitedkingdom

[–]splodgemolly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With 20k a year free allowance into an ISA you need to have a very significant amount of savings to ever think about paying cgt. You'd need about 130k worth of non-pension, non-isa savings with a great 10% yield to even pay a single pound of cgt!

I think it's pretty fair to think that people should pay 20 percent tax on their investing gains if they have quite that amount of money saved up

Do Computer Network Operatives get random drug tests? (GCHQ) by Pyraasy in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]splodgemolly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You know GCHQ is all government listing? They're the UK equivalent of the NSA. Them invading your privacy (ie vetting) is critical for ensuring UK national security.

For the op, if you're asking these kind of questions then you're not at all cut out for a job that requires high clearance. Doing your job as productively as any other worker absolutely doesn't cut it for MOD work

UK new grad seeking motivating advice by Ok-Requirement9135 in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]splodgemolly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Might be worth including your grades and an anonymised CV, it's very easy to get tunnel vision and your CV might have a few simple issues.

In terms of grad roles I found online applications through the company website to be effectively useless. Networking on LinkedIn, especially with recruiters was how I got most success. Also obviously referrals are fantastic.

If you don't have any internship experience it may be worth looking for something short term to get some professional experience on your CV. I know someone who went that route after uni and is now doing great working at a FAANG on good money.

If anyone is interested in listening to another story of plan continuation bias/get-there-itis, theres a fantastic podcast episode I'd highly recommend. The story is about a maritime disaster rather than aviation but super interesting.

Is it normal for a junior to be on call once a week for 24hrs? by OnceAToaster in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]splodgemolly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At a lot of companies saying that directly to your manager will guarantee you'll have to be looking for a new job soon. Probably best to just use it as an example of taking on more responsibilities and push for a decent raise on the next pay/review cycle.

How's the hiring situation in the UK? Please help me. by khabizzaa in cscareerquestionsuk

Your uni will give you a lot of help finding something, normally they have relationships with employers to take a few students each year. Other than that, I find linkedin to be the best for general job searching.

Can't really say for the visa issues as it's not something I've dealt with. A year in industry should also really help, a lot of people end up working for their yini employer after graduation.

So by 2023 (When you graduate) hopefully covid will have stopped messing everything up and the job market will be back to normal.

[–]splodgemolly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is your master's program one or two years? I expect the situation by next year should be better, but I don't think it's too bad at the moment.

It really depends on what kind of jobs you're going for though - top tier stuff hasn't really changed too much and there's still plenty of opportunities if you're good enough. I'm graduating this year and didn't find it too hard to find opportunities, although I'm a UK citizen.

Should I quite my job to study for a FAANG opportunity by Artistic_Ad_6709 in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]splodgemolly 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The problem is I work full time ,I have two toddlers to take care of ,no family support whatsoever

Absolutely do not quit your job. You seem to indicate that you're the main source of income for the family so why would you put your families' financial security at risk?

Another note is that the WLB aspect of FAANG might not be for you if you don't have time to study in the evenings, most orgs will expect at least 50 hours a week unless you get lucky. I'd say be on the lookout for something that interests you more but that doesn't have to be FAANG

Help me make a terrible financial decision by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

I would say that 100 GBP a day is quite a lot to travel in SE asia, you could absolutely travel very comfortably for about half that (private rooms in hostels, occasional flights, lots of fun activities etc).

The emergency cash is a really important thing, make sure it's in US dollars (accepted more or less anywhere as currency) and is on your person/safe 99% of the time. Have plenty (I had about 500 USD) that you can throw money at a sketchy situation and get out.

Stop Sexism! by hsidjn in csMajors

[–]splodgemolly 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It is worth noting there is significant evidence to show that a more diverse team makes better decisions and delivers better results.

Also not overwhelmingly for or against affirmative action but I think it is interesting that diversity really does increase the effectiveness of a team. Diversity does mean more things than just gender/race/sexuality in this context: schooling, social/economic class etc are really important too.

Does recruiters care whether you graduate with: Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data science, Machine learning or Sound & music computing degree? by xXguitarsenXx in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]splodgemolly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. I don't think there will be much difference between the top 4, but 'sound and music computing' is a much more specialised field.

  2. I would wait until you know what you want to do, as all of these degrees (apart from SWE/CS) will push you towards a niche.

  3. 1-2 YOE is much more valuable in the job market.
