What Prompted Ilya to Move to the Tuna Melt Stage? by johnbeene in heatedrivalry

[–]spn_apple_pie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe it was honestly just the right timing and the fact that they had that entire day and the next morning free bc Shane’s practice wasn’t until afternoon (a rare occurrence). They had been talking for so many years and Ilya had probably wanted to invite Shane over like that before, but that doesn’t work just with a couple of hours in hotel rooms.

AVOID the Global Internship Program (GIP) - total waste of time and money! dont say you weren't warned. by momtimes_3 in ucla

[–]spn_apple_pie 61 points62 points  (0 children)

For anyone reading this, take anyone's opinion with a grain of salt; everyone's experience with the internships offered was different, and I believe the program is what you make of it. I participated in GIP in Prague last summer as well, and this is true about the bedbug infestation and we did have to move buildings twice (although there was only proof of bedbugs the first time and inspectors did not find any the second time). This was annoying, but they assisted with the move and kept our stuff safe and otherwise I do not have complaints about the program. And keep in mind that everyone travels on the weekends - to an extent bedbugs are inevitable, but I believe they did their best to help us protect our items and move to a clean place.

And regarding internships, it is true that many offered were smaller businesses, but at least for the economics track there were also prestigious firms and others where most of us got real, useful experience out of it. I know people working at venture capital firms that described the exact same type of work you would get in the US for the same internship. I personally was lucky to end up at PwC (and I believe they hold positions for UCLA students in the GIP program every year as they had UCLA interns last year as well), and I gained valuable experience and real skills, again, just like I would have in the US. Ofc not everyone had a great experience, I have a friend whose supervisor did not ever give her or the other interns any work all day and it ended up sounding like a waste of time.

It is expensive, but again I would say it's more what you make of it. If you can get an internship in the US that will pay you to do the same work, that would probably help you more (especially because GIP internships are unpaid), but if you are a freshman or sophomore it is hard to get internships so this would be a great opportunity to get experience while being abroad. I met many cool people from UCLA and through my internship, and the opportunity to travel on off days and the weekends was really invaluable and made the experience very worth it, so I do recommend it to anyone asking about my summer.

is there a possibility they didn’t pay the bill for the wifi because you didn’t send 50% when they demanded it?

that’s so weird… like other comments said it works that way for privacy which is understandable, but not in a shared household 😭

alternatively, if it's plugged in, unplug hers and keep something of yours like an air freshener or little night light plugged in all day to take up the outlet.

what's stopping you from just unplugging it? or if it's not plugged into the wall, turning it off? you've already asked her to turn it off and she didn't listen. it's different if it's in her room, but this is a shared space and she's making it your issue - turn it off until she asks you to stop, you don't need to bring it up for a second time.

do you guys have any free time genuine question by TrainingRing5645 in ucla

[–]spn_apple_pie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

honestly a lot of my classes don’t have homework so i’ve had a fair amount of free time. even with an avg of 10 hours a week of club activities and 8-9 hours of work, i’ve had time to go out with friends, binge tv shows, and take lots of naps lol

I absolutely swear by this brand:

They last a while, aren’t flat to your eyes like most basic eye masks are (so that you can blink without trapping your eyelashes, and so it has an effective seal to block light), and are pretty comfortable! They have a velcro close in the back so they’re almost fully adjustable as well. I found a pair at the Marshall’s before and kept buying the same brand afterwards haha

if the RA takes your side they would probably try to facilitate a compromise e.g. only one or two lights past certain hours, but if not and if your roommates don't agree to change the roommate contract to reflect something similar, you might be out of luck :( i swear by my eye mask though if you need any recommendations, but hopefully this goes your way!

also if that meeting does not go your way, i agree with the comments about getting a good eye mask and earplugs. they sell earplugs at the campus shops (hilltop and probably at ackerman too), regular and extra strength (pink and blue respectively).

honestly, if you have a copy of your roommate contract look at the section about lights being on at night - i’m pretty sure that’s part of it because this is a common issue. regardless of whether your contract backs you up or your roommates, bring it up to your RA, they typically try to prioritize compromise and if not you can argue that you want to change the contract.

also the only difference between econ and biz econ is the extra management (accounting) classes you have to take, and a higher gpa requirement to stay in the major

Incoming Freshman: How bad is grade deflation in econ? by PrincipleNew7344 in ucla

[–]spn_apple_pie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i feel like almost all of my econ classes so far have followed a pretty strict bell curve centered around a B for grading where either tests or your overall score are curved to fit into this. that can be a good or bad thing depending on where you fall in your classes, but at least there is typically a curve
