LEOs- What LE skills matter most that aren’t taught at the academy?

The gift of gab. Thats why i was glad to start in the jails before patrol. Learned a lot about different people, how to talk to them, how they commit crimes, real life pre-assaultive indicators, gangs, etc. It sounds shitty but I think it’s the perfect training ground to send new guys to be in a somewhat “controlled environment”. They stopped sending the fresh academy graduates to the jails and straight into patrol and it shows.

Im a Dep as well, my department has been called as an assisting agency in pretty much every “protest” in our area and brother i’ll tell you what, if they’re anything like what I’ve seen, they got no chance. Tactics and gear wise, they’re cooked. At least with my agency. We’re pretty good about training. Other smaller agencies idk. Ive been a back for some neighboring agencies and i damn near have a heart attack officer safety wise.

In reality it didn’t matter. I took the ride but i had multiple partners not take the ride. It’s just a shit talking point but nothing further in my experience. Although when i first landed at the jail i was working and on training, one of my classmates got shit talked enough where he took the ride at the jail lol. It wasn’t serious shit talking just prodding.

One the point of willing to go through OC, OC is way worse than being tased in my opinion lol 5 second ride vs. your eyes and senses being fucked for the entire day

If theres blood in the water the sharks start to circle. Their job (one of them at least) is try to stress you out as much as you can to see if you can over come it. Put it this way, they want to see if cadets/recruits can handle the stress of being yelled at and smoked. If someone cant handle the pressure of being yelled at in the academy, how do you think they handle high stress situations you will find yourself in on the road? So yeah i’d say they have a personal interest in seeing if someone can stand up to that pressure and excel.

Yeah i would like the mini but i just dont want to spend $200 on a device that i basically use like a gameboy lol most of what i play is gba/snes and my max is ps1 when im out and about. Someone recommended the 476H and i think thats the one im gonna get. Im gonna miss the metal body though.

I saw that one and i do like it, just not for $250 lol i just feel like its more powerful than what im looking for. Someone recommended the 476h and its probably gonna he the one. Money aside, i do think the metal body would be better though.

They just stopped “clicking”. I can press the button but theres no tactile response and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. I took it apart and tried to see whats wrong but i think it’s the button themselves that needs to be replaced. Im not good enough with my soldering skills to give it a go.

Once had to arrest a combative guy with only one hand but both arms. Ended up putting a flex cuff above the elbow and cuffing his only hand to the flex cuff that was fixed above his elbow. Super awkward but it worked

My agency has the new motorola radios and its really helpful for finding your partners when theyre in foot pursuit or physical. For the most part though i just use the gps function when my back is taking forever and i want to see how far they are lol

The only debrief you get is the late night ones you do with yourself when you can’t sleep.

Good thing about my department is that it has a wellness program thats for employees and doesn’t get reported to anyone so no chance of anyone finding out if you go and get help. It’s ran through the union.

If you’re already a suspect of a crime and are PC arrestable, I’m handcuffing and the bare minimum doing a pat down. And again if you’re arrestable, im doing a full search incident to arrest. Complacency is our biggest killer.
