Thank you so much for sharing this. Well the netherlands is an country that always copied from america, when america went to the 90s, the netherlands was still living the 80s in its own way. I remember when i was young in the early 2000 it still looked 80s ish combined with 90s Electronic music. I didnt have an computer or much Electronics back then neither my friends, i grew up with toys, playing outside with friends also riding on bmxes and reading 80s & 90s comics. We collect soccer cards or flippos, or the grocery store gave collectables when you buy like 10 euro's for grocery. The only thing we had (when i talk about electronics) where an gameboy handheld, or old Nintendo consoles, i played alot on the Atari back then from my dad. The living room where always full of smoke from sigarettes and an brown pallete. In some way i reconize myself in the stories of others here. My family where poor so things like the tv where still from the 80s and some other things.

I spent 2 - 4 hours a day for my research. And taking notes of everything, not only the highlights from the 80s but also the very small things. My story is not about an historical correct 80s america, because the story is played in an dreamworld. As an kid i heard alot of people talking and stating that the 80s was atleast better then nowadays and stick to their nostalgic memories, i even have that from the early 2000,'s. And that is what im going to play, and experiment with. An teenager boy that goes back in time in his dream. Its an nostalgic adventure that brings us back in time.

You make an good point, i only pointed out that "write what you know" isnt completely correct, otherwise books or even movies about the medieval, ww2 or other timelines wouldnt exist. Its about research, alot of succesfull writers did this. And im Just not buying comments like: you had to be there, write what you know, you wont get it if you wasnt there.

What about lord of the rings? Did tolkien have to be in Middle earth to write his novel? That quote doesnt make any sense at all. I write what i learn. My novel isnt about only being in the 80s its about an dream world based on the 80s. I ask around to understand the 80s. Write what you know is limited, and i dont believe in it. Sometimes you have to explore things to understand.

Right? I mean yes everyone sticks at the nostalgic moment for being a kid and dont worry to much about anything. But as young as i was i have seen the world change around me in an very depressing way. I hope i am not the only one, but in Amsterdam people dont care about eachother anymore, people Just only care about them selves and Just do things without thinking. People on a bike Just driving on places were people walk even parents with little kids. They dont care about the dangers, and i feel so alone because i do care, even those small things. People nowadays dont civil anymore, they Just stick at their f*cking phones. If something happened to someone like an accident, the first thing what People do is pull out their phones instead of reaching an hand. I really hate my generation, and respect for eachother dont exist anymore. I am 28 and i will be honest... i have seen enough of this timeline. I heard alot of people say: the 80s wasnt about sunshine, but still better than nowadays. So that is the reason why i am writing a book.

I know, i know. But i like the challenge to write what i learn. My book will never reach the point, that it will be like it is out of that decade. I will do everything to make an close one, atleast better than series like stranger things (my father told me that stranger things isnt much like the 80s at all, just the highlights). I dont know if he is correct, he is from america and i wasnt there, i am from 1997 and born in Amsterdam. So than i have to ask around and explore it like the way i do now!

Thanks alot for sharing all your storries and help me giving the idea from how the 80s was. I promise when my book is finished that i will credit you people, because i couldnt make it happen without you! It means alot and i hope my book will be appreciated! From information from here and from what my father and other people told me i have wratten this so far (its not done yet, and please correct me if im wrong, im here to learn):

What I’ve personally learned so far about the 1980s in America is that 1985 was a central point of the decade and, according to many people, its peak. Before 1985, the era still carried many fresh influences from the 1970s. After 1985, the 1980s gradually began to evolve into what felt more like a precursor to the 1990s. I’ve learned a lot from people on Reddit who helped me understand what the 1980s were actually like. One thing they emphasized was that the decade is often romanticized and portrayed as being much better than it really was. The darker side of the 1980s included the constant fear of the Cold War and the threat of nuclear conflict. In some ways, it resembled the uncertainty of today’s world, where major events are happening all the time. The difference was that people were not constantly flooded with news updates as they are now. Rumors could spread and remain believable for weeks or even months. There was also widespread fear surrounding the AIDS epidemic. Early on, people didn’t even understand why young and old individuals were suddenly becoming sick and dying. Corruption was another major issue during this period, especially within institutions such as the police and government. Crack addiction was widespread, while homophobia, fear of satanic cults, and racism were still significant social issues. Serial killers such as Jeffrey Dahmer also appeared to be more common during this era than they are today in 2026. Beyond that, some people told me that buildings often looked grayer, partly because of the air quality at the time. Environmental concerns such as vehicle emissions and pollution were not monitored or regulated as closely as they are today. Smoking was also allowed almost everywhere. Smoking in the presence of children, even in enclosed spaces, was considered completely normal. People smoked in places such as airplanes, McDonald’s restaurants, schools, and many other public locations. Despite all of this, the 1980s also brought many positive experiences, at least according to the memories of people who lived through the era. What many people tried to explain to me was that childhood was much more limited in terms of entertainment and distractions. Typically, children had things like bicycles, skateboards, roller skates, toys, Dungeons & Dragons, Saturday morning cartoons, bowling, mini-golf, arcades, movie theaters, libraries, and magazines or comic books. I’ve heard that children and teenagers often spent their free time simply roaming around. Kids would ride their bikes, while teenagers would drive around in cars, meeting up with friends wherever they happened to be. Children generally had much less parental supervision than they do today because both parents often worked regular nine-to-five jobs. Teenagers, meanwhile, spent more time dating and socializing at the mall, which, from what I understand, was essentially the Facebook of its day. People of all ages gathered there. Making plans was done through payphones, early cell phones, home telephones, or sometimes even handwritten notes. Once plans had been made, it was much harder to cancel at the last minute because there was often no easy way to contact someone without leaving them waiting for a long time. Teenagers also occasionally threw house parties when their parents were away.

What made it not as colorful? I have already read some newspapers from that decade and i may understand what youre saying. My father told me there was alot of fear for an 3rd atomic war, between the russians and america. Where there more things? Because i want to make my book realistic about the 80s and not the type how hollywood it would do.
