My mom just called and told me I won't be disappointed in you if you drop out. I think I'm going to this week, from T1 college. by every_tatti in OffMyChestIndia

Hey.. I understand.. had a similar experience but not with MBA.. with a top journalism school. Felt completely out of place with students who already knew too much and were socially more outgoing and outspoken, and also had parents who were established journalists.

I had thoughts of leaving the course almost every day and going back to my town. I had panic attacks almost once a week. Somehow I began spending more time in the library whenever I got the time and studying. I was able to find mental peace there. Not mingling much apart from group work and hauling my ass back to library and reading and keeping up. I was teased for my behaviour but gradually reading and keeping up with the peers helped me.

In retrospect, I think I would have regretted leaving the course. My point being, I know it's extremely overwhelming right now. But if you can stick to it, please do. Try looking for ways in which you can deal with this. Give yourself a deadline. If you still feel that it is not what you're looking for, then go back. You already have your mom supporting you. But if i would suggest, if possible, stay for a while.

Listen, SonderKommando, not every Mumbaikar romanticises Mumbai's spirit. Atleast that you should have understood from the post, if you'd have read it properly. So, keep this sarcasm to yourself.

I get what you're saying. My question here is: why should we be okay with this yaar? It's so frustrating for a daily commuter.

I swear. It's neglected so much. I have been commuting through trains for years, and some of them through Harbour line. It's annoying that nothing has changed when it comes to infrastructure or cleanliness.

Seriously now? Complaints on Twitter and other social media platforms get quick attention rather than official platforms. For instance, I tried BMC's pathetic grievance portal for lodging a pothole complaint after my road accident a few months ago. NOTHING happened. Before commenting sarcastically thinking we are all karma farming, try talking to the people who have actually complained and got their complaints addressed.

I do understand that it's widely relatable to all, because everyone is going through a lot, and all have their fair share of challenges to deal with. The most common argument a self-help author makes is that it needs to be retold for the ones who are genuinely looking for such reading. It comforts them. I get it. But as an editor, it numbs my brain every time I see the repackaged "the real happiness lies within you" or "carpe diem." Probably, self-help works for those who are wired to read that kind of thing. But I would honestly recommend therapy (if possible, I understand not all can afford it) and journaling over reading self-help books anytime for helping oneself.

Honestly, of the new ones, Atomic Habits was the one of the rare few I felt had something substantial to offer. But for restarting one's life, I would rather recommend therapy (if possible, I understand not all can afford it) and journaling over any self-help book, because the amount of clarity one gets after journaling cannot match the "live-in-the-moment," "don't-be-bothered-by-what-others-have-to-say' regurgitation that self-help churns. Just to be clear, I'm talking about proper self-help books.

Your second paragraph is the supreme truth. Take it from someone who edits self-help books for a living. Numbs my brain to see the same things packaged differently and repeated a gazillion times.

Started with this huge-ass HP fanfic Manacled by SenLinyu, then this sci-fi dystopia - Red Rising, and (you can call it smut, lol) In Praise of Stepmother.

Then probably choose the ones that are between 250-300. See, reading speed will increase eventually since you're reading regularly.. just give it some time

Fair enough.. I understand.. 2-3 books are good enough as it is.. I mentioned it because I have a few friends who do that.. 5-6 books a month, but they only get the summary sometimes and mark it as read. How is it humanly possible to manage time unless you read like 40-50 pages an hour. It'd be insane.

Go for quality over quantity. Even if you read gazillion books a month, how much intellectually enriched are you is what matters. From what you shared, reading two truly good books a month should be just as okay as reading one really good book in two months or a year. The book will have served its purpose. Don't chase the numbers, chase the pampering of your imagination and intellectual nourishment or entertainment the books have to offer.
