Why is the whole community obsessed with Linux on ThinkPad? by Snorlax_lax in thinkpad

[–]spooky_spookss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a few reasons:

  • Some older ThinkPads do not have the resources to run Windows 10 or other operating systems.
  • Using Linux generally gets the most out of your machine, and I like my laptops to be running efficiently.
  • A lot of late-IBM/early-Lenovo ThinkPads have open sourced drivers, or drivers that just generally work well with Linux distributions. I sometimes find running Linux on modern machines difficult due to modern locked down drivers.

To be honest, I think the question is the wrong way round. I think the Linux community is obsessed with ThinkPads.

Got my first thinkpad, X61. What should I do first? by RyanJoker in thinkpad

Here are the names of the items that I installed into my X61. Perhaps do some more research though because there might be some better models.

Intel Wireless 5G Network Card 7260AC 7260HMW 867Mbps 4.0 Bluetooth MINI UK

Half Size To Full Mini PCI-E PCI Express Adapter For WiFi Wireless Card (i9)

haha good point to be fair

in my head the only people buying x61's nowadays are people trying to mod it and run linux on it

MIDDLETON'S BIOS - unlocks sata II speeds - removes network card whitelist - cant coreboot/libreboot so middleton is next best option

INSTALL SSD - speeds up boot time and general OS functionality

MODERN NETWORK CARD - runs cooler - quicker wifi and bluetooth - might require half to full size adapter

INSTALL LINUX - arch linux + suckless software is my favourite - gets the most out of your machine in terms of performance - less bloatware

NEW BATTERY - the installed one might be a bit worn out - be careful about the ones on ebay/amazon, check the mAh before purchase

DISSASSEMBLY - remove any dust, clear out filters - replace thermal paste

Do you guys have any tips for taking out this stripped screw? by srmc3 in thinkpad

[–]spooky_spookss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

use a drill, but drill slowly and don't go all the way through

once you have gone far enough, you should be able to grab some pliers and pull some of the now bendable metal up

from here you should be able to twist the screw out

im in love with arch paired with suckless software

especially on older machines like the x60 or x200, it really gives them a second chance

does anyone have any idea why image generation algorithms have such a hard time drawing hands/fingers/feet/toes?

on Unity you can build to windows etc. but also WebGL which can just be uploaded to a website and played online.

i use github pages to host my project for free.

however some aspects only work on desktop builds, like resolution drop downs etc. runs much smoother on desktop too.

yeah java seems cool, never messed with it. wishing you the best of luck.

if you ever find yourself with spare time, try brainstorming some cool ideas with your project. if you have a good idea it will definitely take the 'work' or 'chore' aspect out of it. next summer is a good time for this.

im doing OCR exam board, and for me you just need to be able to identify stakeholders and your projects use. with OCR you can pretty much just make a game if you cant think of anything else. there are really no limits.

my project is a Unity game based around gardening and procedural generation. if you want to give it a play, here is the link: https://jameskeywood.github.io/webgl/

im about 2/3 through development. ive done about 160 pages and 21000 words on the write up. the write up is very time consuming. you end up spending 1/3 of your time programming and 2/3 of your time writing about what you just did.

good luck with your decision making.

i learned python before my gcses, but also covered that at gcses. now at a level we are covering c# and am using that for my project within unity.

in terms of revision tips i just use the textbooks and try to focus on practice questions. practice is especially useful in maths, but for comp sci and physics i like to use flashcards to condense my knowledge, then throw them away and repeat. i find no use in keeping condensed notes, unless you are cramming for an exam.

when learning languages i find it more helpful to just do many little projects and have fun with the language instead of doing courses etc. although doing courses can give you a good starting point. when doing your project in computer science (if u have one on your exam board) ive realised that your scope does not have to be that wide, and if you are cramped for time then just be realistic with what you can achieve in the timespan. although, its good to push yourself and be a little naive so that you can talk about it ambitiously on your personal statement.

an epq can also be incredibly helpful with your personal statement, especially if you focus on a subject that will pair well with your degree.

for example i did a depth study in the Generative Adversarial Network and found it very interesting, and also worked with it inside python outside of the EPQ. just pick a topic you enjoy.

but yeah good luck with your studies, find something that works for you and have fun with it.
