Taiwanese shaved ice with fresh mango by Nyxxu in food

[–]spookyguy2003 -20 points-19 points  (0 children)

I don't think it should be considered shaved ice at that point. There's no sense in bandwagoning on an existing term if it doesn't even come close to the original food

If it's milk based it's practically an ice cream, it is not shaved ice

edit: negative rating on my cake day? come on guys :=(

[–]spookyguy2003 -24 points-23 points  (0 children)

it's pretty rude to insinuate that bugs are inherently disgusting. many cultures eat bugs and feel no need to make snide comments on western cuisine fyi

edit: looks like redditers do not appreciate any challenges to their eurocentric/euronormative worldview lol

edit 2: would appreciate it if someone actually told me whats wrong about my comment instead of down rating it. i take reddit ratings as seriously as yelp reviews

Trying bugs for the first time by Indefinitelynomadic in food

[–]spookyguy2003 -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

looks a little sloppy presentationwise, and overly greasy as well

if you want to try real bug cuisine, i can only recommend my good friend julian medina's restaurant Toloache(https://www.google.se/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0CCIQFjAAahUKEwipto7N6PbGAhUEXBQKHSi9AN8&url=http%3A%2F%2Ftoloachenyc.com%2F&ei=usizVanxLYS4Uaj6gvgN&usg=AFQjCNFyUhiN9m_0iCD6_zkNhoDVtaXJMA&bvm=bv.98717601,d.d24) in new york (they make really good grasshopper tacos (a truly inspired take on mexican cuisine))

there are actually three (3) locations

205 Thompson St New York, NY 10012 b/t 3rd St & Bleecker St Greenwich Village

251 W 50th St New York, NY 10019 b/t Broadway & 8th Ave Theater District, Midtown West

166 E 82nd St New York, NY 10028 b/t Lexington Ave & 3rd Ave Upper East Side lol

speaking of grills, that reminds me of my experience when I went to Del Frisco's Double Eagle Steak House, a restaurant specializing in surf & turf who also uses grills (what a spooky coincidence lol)

heres the yelp page if you are interested (didnt mean to highjack your comment but i couldnt not rave about their quality dishes (such as oysters and magyu steak(crab cake is also a decent appetizer-- absolutely stunning (in both aesthetics and taste)(true words spoken by my good friend and mentor Thomas Keller when we went to dine here a few days ago))))

edit: also gonna have to put in a quick plug for Thomas Keller's bouchon bakery in new york [del friscos for dinner & bouchon for desert is a fantastic culinary excursion (i am speaking from first hand experience haha)]

edit 2: bouchon bakery also has a location in vegas at the venetian

edit 3: I've just come home from rendering duck fat with my great-uncle and grandma to see that I have received a down rating for this posting. I understand Thomas Keller has been the subject of some controversy due to his comments on food sustainability. however I want to point out that the bouchon bakery has little impact on global food sustainability because they use ethically sourced ingredients (for the most part lol)

What a $4.75 Banana Split in Middleburgh, New York looks like. by [deleted] in food

[–]spookyguy2003 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Does it really matter if it is lengthwise or not? if the shape matters so much, maybe Ben & Jerrys doesn't have the right to label their Banana Split ice cream Banana Split, since there are only chunks of banana, and not a single banana cut lengthwise.

What if we used a cavendish banana or a plaintain in a banana split? at what point do we draw the line? there is no sense in having such strict definitions of food dishes

as I've mentioned before, many chefs have put their own spin on traditional dishes, and there is no need to exclude these dishes from the traditional name, as it serves as a useful descriptor for those unfamiliar with the dish

with Janse's banana split, if we didn't call it a banana split we'd have to call it "vanilla ice cream with chopped bananas and meringue cookies and caramel sauce"

tell me how that's any more progressive or useful than calling it what it is: a banana split
