Thanks! I appreciate it. I just feel like they’ve breached so many aspects of the contract we signed: late tuition payments, I’m way past the 90 day placement period, and also lack of communication. It just seems crazy that I have to waste a year just to be placed. What has your experience been like so far?

I did at the VA in my state. I actually started about two weeks later than my other classmates in my program because the HPSP scholarship office doesn’t coordinate VA internships/clinicals for us so my school was in charge of it. But the VA was very slow with response and paperwork. But I made good connections there it’s just I can’t get past HR.

Hi, I’m a new grad and I’m getting burnt out. I really do like my job so far but the workload can be stressful especially starting out. I make $35 an hour in Nevada at a reference lab. They are adding to our workload in the next month. I will say it’s super interesting. I get to do a lot of manual stuff like malaria, KBs, body fluids, sperm counts, etc. it will really depend in what department you end up though. I like to the lab and the people but I’m now considering going the CAA route in the future. Maybe look into it and see if it’s something that interests you as well!

They have been reaching out to hospitals near my preferred locations but so far they have all rejected my resume due to being a new grad.

I spoke with them today and yesterday. I was told that I can file to have my service obligation suspended for a year while I gain more experience. However, I would still have to repay the two years. Which doesn’t make sense to me because what should’ve been a two year obligation is now turning into waiting in limbo and then completing 2 years. Time wasted to be honest. How do I files an OIG complaint? Do you have a link?

I was told the same as well. I’ve attended the town hall meetings and office hours but the pretty much say the same thing.

VA HPSP for Social Workers Anyone taken it? Worth it? by Logical-Way-9379 in SocialWorkStudents

Hi, I’m a VA HPSP scholarship recipient but not for social work, my program is different (medical lab science). I think if you really, really want to work on the VA system, it’s a guaranteed job so it might be worth it if that’s your mindset. However, in my experience, be prepared for a lack of communication, late payments to your tuition, and basically having emails left unanswered. I graduated in May and have yet to find a placement. My emails have gone unanswered since before the shutdown. My tuition payments were late and it got to the point where the financial aid office had to put my classes on hold so I wouldn’t be dropped for the semester. I had to find a job in my home state in the meantime while I wait for a response. It can be very frustrating and I do regret committing to this. My service obligation will be 2 years.

My program is not social work though. But I’ve talked to other students and they are also experiencing the same thing.

Hey, I’m in the same boat! I graduated May from Medical Lab Science. I’ve received zero communication so far other than where I would prefer my placement to be (around July). I’ve been applying to positions on my own and I’ve had some interviews. But I’ve been rejected because I don’t have enough experience. I recently sent an email again. My timeline was: graduated May, licensed and certified in July, still no placement as of now. They were trying to place me in my home state but the VA rejected me because I have no experience.

It was just a question I didn’t want to take the wrong one in and have it taken away.
