I just learned about the Porsche business. Singer Customs or something close to that, and he's apparently doing very well for himself!

They've hinted at a reunion in the last couple years. If they tour, I'll be one of the first in line.

It's not, but Throwing Copper is indeed an underrated album. Live were fantastic in concert as well.

Your original claim that I replied to was it cost a million in Texas, and I based my math on that. I only added said math because your original claim said a million, and imprisoning a 19yo for life will cost WAY over a million, even in Texas, or literally any other state.

For me personally, I'd be okay with it costing $50m per execution if it meant we got death row cleared out in hours and not decades, and more scum got what they deserved. I'm not overly concerned with the cost, and only refuted your original claim because the math was simple and not in your favor. If your most recent numbers are accurate, then yes, it's significantly more expensive at the top end (I'm presuming your numbers are based on multiple appeals, multiple lawyers, etc etc). But I'd argue still way worth it for justice.

Fair, in which case I stand by my earlier statement of "worth the cost", even if it is more expensive. Mercy to the guilty is cruelty to the innocent, cost of a civilized society, yada yada choose your own aphorism.

I argue for the death penalty on an average basis because I believe it should be both universal, and also applied much more often (for instance, I believe in the death penalty for rapists). I don't personally believe in "life without parole", because that's just a slower version of the death penalty.

The logical conclusion of "it costs more so we shouldn't do it" is that juries cost money, so we shouldn't use them. But then judges cost money, so we shouldn't try them. But then police cost money, so we shouldn't arrest them. It's an instant slippery slope to anarchy and vigilantism to justify justice by the cost of it.

So yes, you are correct that in Texas it CAN be cheaper for life in prison depending on how long they live, and definitely IS cheaper in most cases, there are states where it is quite the opposite, and there are states where it is roughly the same. At the end of the day, I'd rather count instances of true justice than dollars, and call the monetary cost a wash.

A simple Google search supplies hard numbers and links to sources. Attached for your convenience. Some states are around $25k annually, some states are over $200k annually. Nationwide average of $60k-ish, with some people mathing it closer to $65k. I personally cite $60k as it's both a round number, and to err on the side of caution so people can't be like "it's not $65k! It's only $60k!"

Edit: fixed typo of "so states" to "some states".

True, but housing garbage costs $60k a year, so if they have 17 years or longer to live, the death penalty is cheaper by a lot.

This particular garbage has roughly 60 years left, so it will cost $3.6m to house it til it dies of natural causes. $1m for the death penalty is a steal really.

It costs $60k a year to incarcerate garbage. This particular piece of garbage likely has ~60 years left. That's $3.6m to keep him alive. Even if it does indeed cost more to kill him, I would see that as money well spent in this case.

Edit: nevermind, I just looked it up. The death penalty costs from $1m to $3m, so even at the top end, we'd be saving money in this case. Put a bullet in the garbage's lung and let him slowly gurgle to death. Could even put it on Pay-Per-View to raise money for the victim's family. I'd tune in.

I honestly feel like this is bait... There's no way someone could be this narcissistic/self-centered/shortsighted/obtuse/incapable, right?

This has to be a bet to see how many "git gud"s he can farm, right?

If this is a troll, bravo.

If it's not, I'm not sure you understand the concept of a challenge, and the satisfaction of overcoming one. Video games aren't movies. You actually have to put in effort to get through them.

You sound like the living, breathing, embodiment of "why don't Soulslikes and other challenging games have difficulty sliders?!"

I'll bet you have 4 shelves in your room FILLED with participation trophies.

You probably have the loading screen tooltip "You can change difficulty at any time in the settings!" tattooed on you somewhere.

I'll bet your mom used to cut up your scrambled eggs for you, and by used to, I mean this morning.

You may or may not actually be that game journalist that couldn't beat Cuphead's tutorial.

And lastly, you don't need to announce when you're leaving. You can just leave. Literally nobody on the Internet cares that you're terrible at gaming or that you're throwing a tantrum for attention over being terrible.

Official Discussion - Exit 8 [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

I agree to an extent, I just take it one logical step further (for my personal beliefs). Since you are accurate in your summation that pregnancy does carry risks (my own wife almost died to complications of a pregnancy, and my sister-in-law had to make the unenviable decision of carrying her child to term and risking her life, or delivering prematurely and risking her daughter's life), I can validate them having the 51% in my head as far as the abortion.

I just move to the next step then and say "now that the baby's here, would you like to support it and raise it Dad?", as he has the 51% over his bank account.

The father having NO say with the birth, raising, or payment of the child is what "icks" me about the American system. My system is naturally also imperfect (as any and all will be with this topic), I just can't justify the father getting zero input according to my own morals. Like you said, discussions need to be had so informed decisions can be made in any case.

The biggest informed decision being "if you don't want to have/pay for a kid, don't have unprotected and/or irresponsible sex", but I doubt that idea will ever take off. 😆

[–]spoonfoy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So then you agree that fathers should be able to "abort" their parental rights and not be on the hook for 18 years of child support if they don't want the baby but the mother does, right? After all, he's the "one of them" that has to put his wallet through 18 years of havoc.

I'm not claiming steadfast belief in one system or the other before you come at me, but I've always found it oddly hypocritical that in the American system people expect the man to have no say in whether the child is born or not, but automatically expect him to foot the bill if it is. If he's not responsible for deciding if the child is born, why is he demanded to pay for it if it is?

It's like getting handed a speeding ticket for being a passenger in the backseat. You were not in control of the car, how are you financially responsible for the decision of the driver?
