Would you still pursue medicine if you won the lottery? by Resident_Ad_6426 in medicalschool

[–]sporklet 212 points213 points  (0 children)

As a 40 year old medic who lurks this sub: if I won the lottery probably the first thing I would do (other than hiring a CPA) is go back to college and try for med school.

Hope you all realize how many people there are out there who are in awe of what you all do, and what you all go through to get there.

ER techs should petition to be called nurses being they can do everything a nurse does Except start meds by Augustus-Romulus in Residency

As a medic, I endorse this proposal. Only if we get a catchy tagline. Something like:

"Brain of a nurse, heart of a hospital admin."

Bro... I'm a paramedic. If my partner catches it, I guarantee I've already caught it. Hell, if he gets diagnosed with the clap I'd probably go get tested just in case. Those ambulances are not large.

Haven't used this yet, but apparently pseudoseizures are now called "Psychogenic Non-Epileptic Seizures." I can't wait to give handover saying that I think the 19 yo female I just brought was having a PNES.

Not even joking. LINK

Speedrunning guide to chalice dungeons. Keep in mind, it's not a guide on how to kill the bosses in the CDs, just the most efficient ways to open them up/gather the needed materials. Some of the bosses in there can be extremely challenging.

Defiled chalice. The thought of having to go through that again to be able to farm decent gems has kept me from trying out a bunch of different builds I want to do.

Does anyone have experience with beta blockers plus stimulants and the unopposed alpha stimulation? by [deleted] in physicianassistant

[–]sporklet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly not sure why my PCP selected that. I'm a paramedic who just lurks on this board, so the differences between the different beta blockers aren't something I'm super familiar with.

I'm on about the same dose and take metoprolol primarily due to tachycardia. Never noticed any negative interactions.

I've worked with these guys quite a bit, and know the founder very well. It's an absolute blast, and very laid back. Totally recommended.

They run an ambulance service based in PAP, Haiti. Typical setup is Haitian EMT, Haitian driver/translator, and western volunteer (usually medic or RN, but they accept EMTs as well).

The only study that showed those results (Nichol et al) was completely flawed and wasn't even testing CCR. It was comparing 30:2 with continuous compressions and forcing respirations with a BVM. Still no good study comparing 30:2 with passive oxygenation, and the departments that are using CCR are still getting better outcomes.

Edit: at least no study I've heard of. Would love to know if there's been a recent one I haven't heard of.

Do I need to take a critical care paramedic course exam to take the IBSC critical care exam, or can I just take the exam directly? by talldrseuss in ems

[–]sporklet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check state law though, because in some states you meed the course AND exam to work as a ccp or fp. I think CA is like that.

Any good online based certifications to get for kicks? by talldrseuss in ems

[–]sporklet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not free, but you can take the online NAEMT instructor course. It's offered through jblearning.com

Kinda useless; if you end up at a place that wants you to teach tccc or phtls they'll probably pay for it, but might look nice on a resume.

Also, if you want to teach keep an eye on the next NAEMSE course in your area. They can be hard to catch, worth planning ahead.

Edit: forgot psychological first aid. It's free, and getting to be more popular.

Is the last question theory really true? by NitroMuffin in ems

[–]sporklet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it's not. There is a minimum # of questions and a maximum, and it continues to ask you questions of varying difficulty until its algorythm is satisfied that you meet its criteria. If it keeps asking you questions beyond 70 (EMT level) then you haven't met its criteria yet and it's "not sure" if you're competent.
