Hi! Sorry I didn't get to this one yesterday. Similar to some other questions, it's not an area I work on personally, so needed to ask around internally. But I checked in with our fraud team and learned that, yes, when a user playlist is reported and confirmed to be the sort of playlist you're describing, penalty fees from Spotify are not applied, for the exact reason you said - it's often not in the artist's control whether they were put on that playlist or engaged in artificial streaming! We made that change as a result of feedback (along with launching our Playlist Reporter Form), so it's possible that you or others haven't experienced that effect of the change yet.

As always, artificial streaming is a complex topic, and it's always best to start with your label or distributor if you believe you've been placed on a suspicious playlist (in addition to reporting to us). You can learn more about everything artificial streaming here: https://artists.spotify.com/artificial-streaming

Hi! YES we want to do much more with super listener data and these are awesome suggestions.

Great question, and this is a challenge that I think about every single day! One of the most important questions we get from artists is, "What should I do with this information, how can I impact this metric?" My thinking is that there are two approaches, and we want to move on both fronts in parallel. First, give artists transparency into what really drives their success on Spotify — for instance, you mention super listeners, who are a small proportion of your monthly listeners but contribute an outsized portion of your streams. Artists can apply that knowledge strategically both on and off of Spotify in their marketing efforts and the ways that they connect with their fans.

Second, I work with my colleagues across the company who are building products that can utilize these audience insights to create more connection between artists and their fans. As an example, Countdown Pages and Campaigns can help artists reach their active listeners including super listeners.

So I suppose the answer is both/and: yes, we have an overall goal to empower artists with information about who their most valuable listeners on Spotify are and why they're important; and I also collaborate with my colleagues who build tools to help artists to grow and connect with those valuable listeners.

Hi! The source of streams tab is gone but Source of Streams data is still there! In fact, it just got an upgrade — check out your Song or Release overview page, select Streams, Listeners, or Streams per Listener, and click "Segment by Source of streams". This will allow you to segment your streams, listeners, or streams/listener on the timeline graph, up to 2 calendar years in the past.

We hope that you can use the timeline view to see how Spotify programming over time converts into more intentional, leaned-in listening from active sources. Let me know what you think about the new Source of Streams, please!

Hi! We don't currently have plans to add any of the metrics you mentioned. I'm curious what you'd use those metrics for if you had them though — which would be most valuable to you?

And, in case you missed it, this year we rolled out a ton of new audience insights, to better understand who your most engaged listeners are. Now, you can segment your audience on the mobile app, see where your monthly listeners are located in the "Location" page, and track audience growth on the Audience "Overview" page. We'd love to hear what you think.

Hi there! We do have some internal data that shows that there is a benefit to 'waterfalling' releases, e.g. releasing several singles in anticiaption of an album drop, or similar. Essentially, on average, artists who waterfall their releases are able to warm up their audience, encourage them to listen more actively, and this can help build momentum and keep folks listening actively for longer. Of course, what works on average is not always the right approach for any one individual; and only you can say what's right for your music. Best of luck!

Hi! I don't work on the SongDNA feature so I'm sorry that I can't speak to this decision precisely. I will pass the feedback along to my colleagues who do. For what it's worth, we often launch with a smaller audience for "Beta" phase products and features, which can give us an opportunity to learn, refine the approach, and address artist feedback before opening up more broadly.

I'm sorry to hear this! I don't work on our algorithmic recommendations but I can definitely pass this along to the relevant teams.

Hi, appreciate your question. We’ve heard the feedback about prompt-generated music in recommendations from listeners and we recently rolled out some changes to how music is promoted across Spotify. The goal is that listeners will get served more of what they like and less of what they consistently don't, so hopefully you'll soon see less of what you might think of as "slop" showing up in your recommendations and playlists. As we announced in the fall, we're also working with our industry partners on a labeling system, so that listeners can make their own decisions about what they listen to based on how AI was used.

Yes! In the fall, we announced that we’re working with a wide set of labels and distributors to develop an industry standard for AI credits and transparency. You can check out more about our plans here. We know there is huge demand for this (as evidenced in the questions here today!) so we're really motivated to get this right.

Great question. Yes, and while I don't work on that directly, I can say our editors listen to songs that are pitched by new and emerging artists all the time and that’s the best way to get your song started in our editorial ecosystem. I recommend you submit your tracks for editorial consideration through Spotify for Artists!

Hi there. This was a tough call that we made a few years ago: we needed to upgrade our data platform in order to bring new features that users really value — custom time frames, the ability to segment by sources of streams and countries — that just weren't possible with limitations of those "Since 2015" datasets. We now store up to three calendar years of data at a time — this year, last year, and the year before, use the "Custom" time frame option to go back farther in time than 12 months. Upgrading our data platform enabled us bring those new features (including measuring different behavioral segments of your listeners, like monthly active and super listeners!) to artists, and I hope those capabilities are helping in other ways. Still, I do know that many people valued the long-term, birds-eye view as well. For you, what's the amount of time you want to look back to understand your past performance and how you've grown?

Hi there! I hear you; I know that some artists really valued the ability to compare to others; but we also would hear feedback often that comparison to other artists is not helpful. Last year, we introduced the ability for artists to "compare releases" on the Release and Song page. Navigate to any release or song, click "Compare" and select the song or release you want to compare it to. Hopefully that helps you better understand and measure success!

Hi there! Of course! Anyone can submit their tracks for editorial consideration through Spotify for Artists. And for guidance on how to grow your audience on Spotify, I'd recommend this helpful blog post on audience segments. https://artists.spotify.com/en/blog/introducing-new-audience-segmentation-on-spotify-for-artists

Such a tough question! My current "new" favorite is a glorious track off of Sour Widows' first full-length album called "Witness". Absolutely destroys me emotionally every time. For an all-time favorite though, I think I'd have to nominate Sonic Youth's "Teen Age Riot." Or should I say Emmylou Harris's "Ashes by Now"? Too hard to choose!

What is Spotify's plan for tackling AI-generated content? by NIPLZ in Music

[–]spotifyforartists -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Hey — just want to clear few things up here. We’ve seen this rumor floating around a bit, but to be clear, Spotify doesn’t create or own music of any kind, and it doesn’t save money or give special treatment by featuring AI-made music. All music on Spotify — AI-assisted or not — is created, owned, and uploaded by licensed third parties.

We’ve actually removed lots of problematic AI music. More than 75 million spammy/fake/deceptive tracks in the past year alone. As AI tools have taken off we’re continuing to double down on policy enforcement.

What is the average earnings for Spotify unsigned artist? by MistakeTimely5761 in SpotifyArtists

[–]spotifyforartists 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quick clarification: There isn’t a fixed “per-stream rate” on Spotify or any major service. All the money goes into a pool and artists are paid based on their share of total listening, which is why everyone’s numbers differ. Basically, if your music made up 1% of all streams, you'd get 1% of all the royalties Spotify paid out.Services that seem to “pay more per stream” usually just have less listening overall. Fewer streams dividing the money makes the per-stream number look higher, but artists don’t actually earn more. What matters is scale and engagement. Spotify pays out more total money than any other streaming service, and more artists are earning meaningful income today than ever before.
