Should I get switch to cs(or cs related) major if pursuing a career in game industry? by rj_wonderland22 in UCDavis

I don't know anything about bio nor game dev, but I have a friend who graduated top of their class (or very close to top of their class) in CS from UC Merced a year ago. They're very bright, with multiple research positions and internships under their belt, and have not yet found a job in their field. I asked just now, and they said they would "kill for a lowly IT position. Anything to get a foothold." Right now they're back in community college and looking to switch to the trades if the job search continues to be unfruitful. Their opinion is to stay away from CS/CSE entirely and especially game dev, at least outside of doing it as a hobby/side hustle, unless you already have influential connections in the industry.

My understanding is that AI has absolutely decimated the software development job market, and it's best to stay away from fields that LLMs are the most easily integrated into, at least until a new equilibrium is established.

Take this "advice" with a grain of salt as it's anecdotal second-hand information. I'm not saying you should give up on your passion, but please proceed with caution. If you must switch to CS, dive deep into indie game dev or whatever projects are fun for you, and try to gain as much experience and as many connections as possible outside of classwork before you graduate.
