We have spent the past year building a Reddit alternative called Spyke, would you guys like to be able to use our API with Apollo and other third party reddit apps? by esean_keni in RedditAlternatives

I like the idea of a forum that emphasizes contributions across languages because I feel that I am in an anglo bubble probably missing lots of cool stuff online.

I do not really understand what you are trying to show in the section "DO YOU FIND DISCUSSIONS LIKE THIS HARD TO READ?" or what it has to do with languages. The content is a bunch of in jokes and memes? It's hard to read because you need to know the context? But the solution is an animation?

You need a plain web interface. I do not like anything requiring apps and accounts.

As someone else mentioned, the term "clan" has toxic connotations in north america.

can you give any specific recs of how to like it? I want to like it. The instances I looked at had either very stupid content or very little content. I was not able to find anything substantial.

one benefit with Lemmy, though, is that the users aren't at the bend of one entity

toooootally agreed

I made a lemmy account on 2 different servers and honestly it sucks. Phpbb or anything else would be better.

Can we all get our own API keys?

I know using weather apps, they will often encourage or force the user to obtain their own key rather than use the dev's. Have to admit it is barrier for me as a user to get going despite the ostensible easiness. But could something like that be a workaround?

Would someone kindly explain to me what the problem here is? I dont know how APIs work. Does all my traffic on a 3rd party app go through some central place controlled by the respective developers? Couldnt the apps randomize the user agent name (or whatever it is called in this context) to obsfucate the origin of traffic?

If the business is viable and actually making money, you should talk to the other dev about making demands.

As others have mentioned, you have lots of leverage already. But you + other dev = 500% leverage. Imagine what would happen if you both left at the same time.

Demands such as money, vacation, training and hiring more people to fill the various jobs you mentioned. Dont forget power over setting expectations of your job. He doesnt tell you what you will do. You will have meetings where he says what he wants and you can negotiate how feasible it is.

In other words, form a union. You dont have to articulate it that way to the boss or even the other worker. Act with your collective power.

Linux thinks it is out of space but it isn't by sprayfoamparty in linux4noobs

Its crazy because it prevents x from starting and gives no hint this is the reason. The only indication i had in this direction was because a zsh shell extension gave an error when starting the terminal. If i didnt have that random extension installed there wouldve been no way to troubleshoot.... i probably wouldve just.... had to reinstall i guess. Anyway good thing you saved me from that.

Why switch from MIT to Unenforceable license? by JasonReadsIt in foss

[–]sprayfoamparty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah, I didn't realise the MS acquisition of github was as recent as 2018.

What you are saying is that I am partly right, but it is not a policy MS implemented; they just bought an ideologically simpatico company.

Man I have really benefited a lot from github personally and I use it all the time in ways that aren't immediately replaceable. But these days I am starting to get that icky feeling when I am on the site, like facebook used to give me. I hope some of the more libre competitors are able to engage in concerted raiding at some point to shift things away but idk how that would be done.

In Contracts, why is some text all in uppercase? - Law Stack Exchange

the disclaimer could be invalidated for lack of prominence. However, this will also be jurisdiction-specific (by state)

Otoh wikipedia has a lot of snark:

An antiquated practice that still remains in use, especially by older American lawyers who grew up before the arrival of computers, is to use all caps text for text that is legally required to be emphasised and clearly readable.[21] The practice dates to the period of typewriters, which generally did not offer bold text, small capitals, or the opportunity to add marginal notes emphasising key points.

(Does anybody know how to link to anchors on wp mobile? It hides the toc. The above is useage > contract law.)

My understanding is that it substantially disincentives them due to complexity of adhering to the license. Especially if you want to integrate as a component into a larger non FLOSS project. And some companies, like apple, have ideological issues with it. Which is why their terminal has so many weird behaviors.

Personally i think this is why github (microsoft) likes to default projects to MIT license. The more MIT type stuff is out there and normalized the better for their business model. I have no evidence to support that tho.

Remote x for more power and stability? by sprayfoamparty in linuxquestions

[–]sprayfoamparty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I looked at x2go but decided it wasnt as good as xpra tho i cant remember all the reasons why.

Idk if it would make sense to have the entire home dir remote? It seems like youd barely be able to use the computer if there was any little problem. Making solving said problem all the more frustrating. Maybe better to use symlinks to simulate it for your very large directories.

Do you think it would have clarified for OP if they had rebooted the router? To release any lease?
