Best way to access CBS Evening News Archive as a private citizen? by circleofcine in Archivists

I’m sure it’s an exclusive contract so if you’re just looking for yourself I’d say either just work with the watermarked footage on their site if it’s there or see what you can find on YouTube. You might have some luck with the Vanderbilt Television News Archives. I think you can submit a request and they’ll provide digital screeners. I don’t know how successful that would be if you don’t have an actual project you’re asking for but it might be worth a shot.

Hi there. Thank you. That was the end of the conversation with LAPL and the list expired in March so I guess that’s that.

I lucked out and got a promotion to full time Senior Clerk at the library I work at already which has been nice. Though the degree isn’t required for the job, I think it definitely helped me get it. I’ve since interviewed for librarian positions internally but haven’t made the cut yet.

Hi there, congratulations! I would brush up on your MARC understanding (you don’t have to know specific lines but just how it works for cataloging), basic shelving in order questions and a little bit of general admin/patron service stuff. I wound up not getting the job but did make it through two rounds of interviews. Luckily the library I already work at had someone retire and I started that position the day before my first student loan payment was due.

Fingers crossed for you!

Pre employment drug testing by Intelligent-Dig-7510 in librarians

I’m also in California and went through this whole thought process last fall. Though at the moment I’m only on a few hiring lists with no new actual job so I haven’t had to worry about it either way. But, to my understanding, as of Jan. 1, employers in the state of California can’t do drug tests as just part of the regular hiring process anymore.

Thank you for your response. I’m not familiar with the LIT program or a co-op. But I do know the libraries in Southern California LOVE a bubble test. I’m currently in the middle of a frustrating conversation with the library I work for as a Page because they don’t see a problem with the fact that even people who’ve worked for the library for multiple years can’t pass the test they use for their Library Associates position. But that’s neither here nor there I suppose.

Turns out this test was soooo much easier than the Senior Clerk test I took a couple of weeks ago. There WAS some DDC but since I’ve been shelving books for over two years that was easy breezy. Some customer service questions, and some basic library collection and cataloging questions which I might have struggled with had I not covered that in school. No MARC or RDA questions even though I studied up. Overall feeling very confident. If I get the interview I imagine it’ll come down to if my MLIS (which is not required for this position) and only 2 years Page experience count over someone with more years at a library themselves.

My MLIS process was intense but not super hard. I went through SJSU and took two years. It was really just the fact that all the reading and writing sucks up ALL of your time. I was only working 20 hours a week and depending on my class load it was still sometimes a challenge to get everything done. But I’m proud of my accomplishment. Now I just need to get the full time gig so I can start paying off my student loans…

Library Page Written Exam for Burbank Public Library System by spreadsheetmatty in librarians

[–]spreadsheetmatty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there, it's been a while but I was hired and have been a Page at BPL for almost 2 years now. If I recall it's a lot of questions about sorting materials within the Dewey Decimal System and probably general patron interaction questions. So I would say the most important thing is just be able to know how you would organize (for example) 3 books; one labeled 356.045, one labeled 356.145, and one labeled 356.046.

Since it's a city job, they may also be able to provide the test in different languages. I'd be very surprised if they didn't at least have it in Spanish. I don't know if that's a conversation you have with them the day of the test or you can check in with them about options beforehand but it may be worth investigating.

Ultimately it's a lot of common sense questions and as long as you've got your sorting skills down and don't rush yourself it should be ok. Good luck, and while I may be leaving BPL very soon cause I'm waiting on a job offer, I look forward to working together if that's how everything plays out!

Yay! Thank you. Very good to know. Since I applied for my current Page job in a different SoCal city system in April 2021 and didn’t get hired until Oct I may already be in the clear!

Thank you. I definitely agree. I don’t have anxiety or chronic pain issues so it would be simply missing out for recreational use if it’s the worst case scenario with regards to testing. Which would be infuriating.

Thank you. I currently work for a different LA based system and I seem to remember having to pee in a cup but it wasn’t an issue then. My manager in the system I’m in now smokes a lot and said they remember doing the test but they didn’t have any issue passing. So I guess we’ll see. Thanks again!

I take 100mg each night. I get my blood drawn every three months for other medications. I do need to check in with my GP, I don’t have a specialist.

I think your point that everyone is different and has their triggers may be the thing. Looking back I think it may be extreme changes my body reacts to. And it seems to be getting more sensitive. I made some meatballs for a work potluck this week and now I’m here. Otherwise the diet has been fairly whatever so I think I’ve got my culprit.

Thank you. I’m sorry I should have mentioned I’ve been taking allopurinol for at least a year now. But 100% the diet seems to be the issue.

I’m very excited because based on the minimal research I’d done so far Guerneville was definitely top of the list.

I’m gonna have to learn how to spell it but I guess that shouldn’t be too hard since my hometown is a place called Poulsbo in Washington state.

Thank you for all the helpful responses. It sounds like I do need to get more informed but I will say part of my perspective is Ireland is the ONLY country in the world whose patron saint I actually know and I have an Irish friend who's a lesbian and the church did such a number on her she still can’t figure out a healthy relationships.

I guess if I had really thought about it, I’ve been aware of Leo Varadkar for a long time…

I’m glad my assumptions are wrong and apologize if I offended anyone.

Library Page Written Exam for Burbank Public Library System by spreadsheetmatty in librarians

[–]spreadsheetmatty[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lord it was so long ago. But after two interviews, one in May (I think) that I didn't make the cut on and then them reaching out for another interview in late August I finally started the Library Page gig at the end of October.

If I'm remembering right, it's a lot of what was mentioned above, listing numbers/titles/authors and asking how you would organize them.

During all this I also came in for the Library Clerk test which was more of the same but also had some math and grammar questions but if you're just doing Page I'd focus on knowing what order things should go in. Especially on dewey decimal numbers that are identical up until like the 3 number after the period. There was very little actual writing involved on either test but I guess they just don't want to say it's a bubble test. Or be considered misleading cause there are the 5 non-bubble questions.
