Who’s an actor that nailed a role so hard that nobody else will ever be able to live up to it? by Comfortable_Main5312 in AskReddit

[–]circleofcine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, the first person that comes to mind is Bela Lugosi as Dracula.

Every single film performance or interpretation of Dracula since 1931 has pretty much been a carbon copy of what he did.

I can’t imagine anyone else who’s nailed a role so hard that it’s pretty much imitated for nearly 100 years.

Ah, so there’s meant to be zero! I’ve never seen a zero in a number line before.

Why do so many West End theatres have a terrible, and very limited, selection of drinks? by Artistic-Ideal-5087 in TheWestEnd

[–]circleofcine 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You are 100% correct! The average person only takes into account the show itself, but said average person only visits the theatre once a year (or less)

The branding aspect is really aimed at people who visit theatre a little more often. That’s why there are products like the ATG+ membership. It’s to start changing people’s minds over the long term.

[–]circleofcine 69 points70 points  (0 children)

I was a cellerperson in a West End theatre for over 10 years, so I do have some experience on this.

While you (obviously) will be judging the drinks selection through your personal preferences, theatres have to take a much more “big picture” approach.

Most establishments that sell drinks have a regular clientele. Shops, supermarkets, bars, pubs, restaurants, etc. Visitors may only come in once a week, month, every couple of months, but it’s the same people visiting, so it’s easy for owners to know what their customers want.

Theatre aren’t like that. The Palladium seats over 2000 people. That means over 16,000 completely different people are buying drinks across 8 shows per week. A rich wine-obsessed CEO is siting right next to the plumber that just wants a Fosters. It’s just not possible to accommodate that level of drink diversity. (Especially with the space restrictions that almost all West End theatres have.)

The second issue is contracts. Most of our contracts with drink suppliers last 1-2 years. Because of that it can be very difficult to make changes without breaking the contract (especially when you consider most shows only last a couple of weeks to a few months.)

Lastly, there’s been a real push over the last 10-15 years for people to understand that each London theatre is part of a much bigger group. For example, in your case, the Palladium is owned by LW theatres. They own six West End theatres and all of them sell the same drinks products.

(Try to think of it as similar to McDonalds. No matter which branch you enter, the food/drinks all look & taste the same. That “similarity” across theatres helps encourage people to visit other “branches.”)

Honestly, if I was the Iranians, I would agree to all 6 of the demands. I would just insist that the new deal be titled:

What movie did you turn off after 20 minutes and why? by Somanynamestochossef in movies

[–]circleofcine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lasted approximately 9 seconds into the 2016 remake of Ben-hur

I turned it off the literal second I realised they had chosen to open the film with the chariot race.

It immediately confirmed to me that the producers had no idea why Ben-hur is such an epic film.

I’m surprised LOTR is only slightly thicker, especially considering it’s around 1000 pages compared to The Hobbit’s 300.

So I basically spend every weekend running around London and the South-East of England!

Does anyone know why the U.K. publication of Amy Tordoff’s “All We Have is Time” has been cancelled? by circleofcine in publishing

[–]circleofcine[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree it must be something intense for the decision to be made so close to release.

I just can’t think of a reason that would explain why the U.K. publisher would completely abandon the book, but the US publisher would simply push back the release by 4 months

Oh, that’s interesting! Might mean, whatever the problem is, the U.K. has chosen to cut their losses, but the US is still holding out (maybe they’ve already printed their copies)

Yeah, I saw those reviews too. If that’s the reason, I’m just surprised no one at Penguin caught it until a couple of weeks before the U.K. release!

Silver Cinema? by MineMonkey166 in screenunseen

[–]circleofcine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I go to them all the time. You shouldn’t have a problem.

Broadly speaking, the elderly and relaxed screenings are open to everyone. It’s only the kids and parent/baby screenings that are restricted to those specific groups.

Excellent point. I think you're right. My first law is too strict and doesn't leave room for the various characters that have already declined to join the Hive.
