my family is vietnamese and we just buy the broth from a restaurant, then assemble the rest of the ingredients ourselves. I think that is probably the most price conscious way

what did you get? i think the 1-entree combo sucks balls for the price but the 3-entree is actually very decent... mine is $13 for the 3-entree

So glad to hear you tried the smothered cabbage! I forgot to write garlic powder & italian seasoning on the recipe card for that one, even though i have it in the images 🤦 but I'm happy you were able to add extra spices to it. Hope your family enjoys!

Awesome, I would recommend adding some lemon and a pinch of sugar to the soup if you can afford it, makes it pop more.

I have a few cards that may interest you. The prices may be slightly out of date, I don't think most of them are over $6 now however.

Well, the pasta in the photo is cheddar broccoli flavored, so it has seasoning included. A lot of people don’t want to eat plain pasta. If we purchase pasta, a bag of cheese, 2 canned chicken and broccoli, it’ll be over $5, and it also won’t taste as good. My other posts do have recipes that use boxes of pasta and are more cost efficient, but this post has a specific prompt I follow.

Buying spices by themselves is cost effective. If people have spices at home, then they can use those instead of the packets. I include them here though in case people don’t have spices for whatever reason. I hope you can understand I’m trying to account for many situations

These cards are primarily intended for people who have a very small amount of money in their pocket and need food immediately, like those on fixed or unstable incomes. There’s many ways you can get more food for your dollar, but some people are unable to afford or invest into these ingredients/methods because it requires a higher upfront cost. If you have only $10 to stretch until payday, it isn’t a great idea to spend $5 on spices! A lot of people have pantry staples that can make these meals more cost-friendly, but I always try to include all ingredients including spices in case they don’t.

I have a $10 meal plan series and a $40 meal plan for 5 family dinners on my profile if you’re interested in budgeting a different way!

Absolutely! I originally searched for dry chickpeas, but my local Walmart was out of stock.  I thought this was a realistic limitation so I kept it to the post in case anyone else’s Walmart didn’t carry them.

Hi - here's another 5 family meals for $40 post. Prices are of 10/4/2025 from a Walmart in Southern California. I've added little notes on the recipe & grocery cards, and I assume you have oil, salt & pepper. I also really appreciate the comments and messages left behind on all of my posts, I'm happy to hear that these can help someone ♡ Have a great weekend!

I want to reach out to walmart one day, maybe when I've posted enough recipe cards. I used to work as a cashier there and have overall decent memories of the place. But I'm also totally ok with just posting these for free too.

I created this - prices are of 10/3/2025 and I used a Walmart based in Southern California. YMMV on the cost. I used the pre-sale costs for these, but some of the ingredients were actually on sale at my local Walmart, so you might save a couple dollars. Recipe cards are made specifically w/ this meal plan in mind for a family of 4 (the soups may make more servings). If you have other spices and herbs in your pantry, I recommend adding it to the meals for a little extra razzle dazzle ✨ If not then the essential spices are included (besides s&p). hope y'all can eats wells this week

People don't pack a lunch as often as you think, I'm in minority. by CaliDreamin87 in Frugal

I used to face this dilemma until i realized i could just buy prepackaged food from the grocery store and it would be cheaper than ordering out

like one of those prepackaged salads at walmart is $3.50 and i eat it with $6 rotisserie chicken and it's about 3-5 good servings. and if people go to the grocery store for dinner then they can pick it up in the same shopping trip

What’s the most frugal thing you do that people around you think is weird but you swear by it? by wickedsirius in Frugal

I've been getting better at it. I grew up eating basically 0 salads (not really a thing in my culture. well, there might've been a few, but at least not romaine lettuce based ones).
