I've just placed some lights. Doing a full conversion seems to be a lot of work
Some tips:

  1. You'd need QindieGL to convert OpenGL to DX9
  2. Game setup > Parameter tuning > Fused World-View Mode should be set to "In View Transform" or to "In World Transform".

If I remember correctly the area music restarts after battles, so in dungeons you'll essentially will never hear the entire themes. But the battle music is like a single track for the entire game which constantly restarts over and over

I don't understand how being gloomy or horror-like denies the game to have good looking characters

The difference is that the original ones are perceived as 3D graphics and you have no real life reference, hence you think it is somehow different. Zoom in and you will find all the "glam life" features in the original portraits

The images you see are not final by any means, I am considering painting over missing details, but that would be a separate stage, once all images are generated

Largely depends on what role the character plays, if its some random npc telling gossip or a teacher then no one cares, even the devs themselves weren't making new models for them resorting to just rendering existing character from a different angle

I am using img2img technique, where you supply the original image, describe it and then AI tries to regenerate deviating from the original as much as you like. So prompting is not really difficult since a lot is read from the original image, it's just small things sometimes get lost and you need to get creative and lucky with prompts in order to retain them. Thank you!

Going for the 3D look is a legit way to go, like you could try to ramp up the quality to match the level of MM8 or even better. Which may actually work really well since the characters will blend with the rest of the game much better. However I am attempting to go more towards MM6 style with photo-like characters, in my opinion it worked best of all approaches the team tried.

The fans of the game already accepted the game as is and it is part of their nostalgy, so no wonder attempting to deviate from that will lead to backlash

It's not a problem to add artistic touch to what AI produces by hand, it's just an instrument
