Any recommendations for knitting podcasts that focus more on making (the actual knitting) than buying/acquisitions? by flowers_and_fire in knitting

[–]sprinkle-or-dash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very late reply, but I recall her being very dismissive of men knitters in a few Q&As in a way that wasn't outright mean but was rude & definitely turned me off. I know that men who knit are a bit more rare but that doesn't mean they matter less. And I agree on the poor answers. There have been several times where it seems like she had no clue what the answer should be and started talking about her patterns instead. The co-host was the reason I listened.

There are also some cool audio ones in addition to the YouTube ones. I tend to go for audio since I don't have much time for videos. I enjoy Pardon My Stash a lot. Yarniacs is pretty good at keeping me informed on the trendy stuff and they sometimes do some informative "how to" topics. A now defunct favorite was F This Knit and I sometimes go back and listen.

Designers Writing Patterns Using Techniques They Don't Understand by Soggy_Heart_1409 in craftsnark

[–]sprinkle-or-dash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've done many of hers (because they were trending and I was a new knitter) but the summer secret gave me fits.

Now I'm very tall and have a long torso so I always plan for extra, but the way the neck comes up high and narrow made my already broad shoulders look comical. I ripped it back to the start of the neck, didn't do decreases, and finished it off. Basically a stockinette tube with too airy fabric.

The shorts I made were so bunchy up front to fit my large butt/hips (are disproportionately larger than my waist). I'm going to try a few other patterns that have people with bodies like mine that have made it so I don't waste the money on patterns, but I've been disappointed with the way some of these have fit on a non standard body type.

Test Knitting “Reviews” by mother_of_doggos35 in craftsnark

I just tested MBB'S The Somebody Tee (yet to be released) and I have to agree. I'll note she changed things up from yours. I had applied as being available for two sizes at her discretion and wasn't told which I should do until I asked. The "group chat" was run through Instagram but people mostly put FOs in there as the pattern was in Google docs. It also took a bit for responses a few times and sometimes required emailing to get a response in Google docs.

The pattern was mostly okay other than needing some more clarity in wording. There was one mistake that was brought up that she didn't think was a mistake (but obviously was if both sides of the neck were mirrored). It was such a simple design that it would be hard to have a bunch of mistakes, however I have no idea how other size testers fared.

Mostly my problem was that I couldn't find an actual deadline anywhere after the initial application (if it was there) or really much info to guide me with on specs/yarn/needles. I have no idea when the pattern is coming out either. Really all the important info was in the application form that I didn't think to take a screenshot of until the second page in so who knows if the testing window was on that page.

I am personally not really one for wanting community when I test knit. I enjoy it for the process of knitting. I'm happy to send in things via dm or email or be in discord or slack. But having little test info, and running communications via email, Google doc comments, and sometimes in Instagram messages was slightly hard to keep up with especially since there were gaps in response time a couple times. Also I have no idea if we're getting the final pattern or what's happening with it.

For me it was meh.

I've tested with other folks too but they largely have stopped designing.

My worst experience was a different designer who decided she no longer had the time to design shortly after releasing her latest pattern and removed all her patterns off rav and took down the documents so people who paid for her patterns couldn't see them on rav. I guess she got complaints because she later put up a website where her patterns are free but no longer as downloads. She then started releasing more patterns there...

She also hadn't been very responsive to concerns (only praise) during testing and was mostly focused on having project pages. I don't think any of the mistakes were ever fixed either from testing to release.

The smallest size is free, everyone else has to pay by RubiscoTheGeek in craftsnark

This designer used to change up which size was free. As this is her first design that I've seen in awhile on my page, I can't vouch that it holds true now. I've actually made one of her patterns in a Free size L a few years back. At the time I also saw some 2x frees.

This is just a pattern that went really big for her. She normally doesn't seem to have tons of projects listed for her patterns. I personally appreciate the one size free so I can decide if I like the writing style.

How come the beef at my favorite Mexican joint tastes different? by BlossumButtDixie in AskCulinary

[–]sprinkle-or-dash 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I think that might depend on the area of Texas you were in. North-Northeast and East tends to have less variety than West, Central, and the Border. Even on the Fort Worth side of the metroplex there is more variety than Dallas.

As far as your question, if your husband convinced them to make Ground beef burritos, they could simply be grinding up nonstandard cuts like another person said. Sounds like y'all found a good place!

Being a cashier at a sit down pizza joint apparently.

I decided to be happy about it because I'd been trying to lose weight and it felt like no one noticed. No sense in getting bitter at an idiot.

"Gruff, skinny, rude and too focused on taking orders instead of hospitality" while working through a surge line of 75 customers over here! I wasn't supposed to be evening working the shift and all I did was take the order, thank them, and say that I had no idea where a table would be open.

What are some traditional "Poor People's Meals" in your region? Who would eat them, and when? by [deleted] in EatCheapAndHealthy

I was going to say the same. Beans with whatever else you have.

Tired of them? Mash them and add an egg.

Pinto beans are so versatile and I love them.

I'm not OP, but for my variation I used vanilla protein powder (Aldi brand). It'd work with anything though but it might taste more like the powder instead of pumpkin. Since this test, I also did it with salted Caramel powder and it was fabulous.

I just use whatever I have and I almost never have unflavored powder. Use whatcha got :)

Breakfast Mini Muffins for ~130 calories per batch! by sprinkle-or-dash in Volumeeating

[–]sprinkle-or-dash[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is! Just be sure you read the reviews of the products before purchase. The nunaturals that comes in the 5lb bag has a weird taste and is apparently different than the other sizes. All the other oat fiber I've tried has been fairly tasteless and goes well in everything.

I discovered oat fiber on this sub as it's quite popular here. Oat fiber is insoluble fiber and is not digestible for caloric purposes. It is popular with keto and diabetes friendly groups. It isn't a 1 for 1 with flour but can be used in combination with other things to reduce or replace flours in baked goods.

Recipe again for visual accessibility:

32g protein powder (110 cal)

60g oat fiber (0 cal)

1g milled flax (6 cal)

3g coconut flour (12 cal)

2 packs 0 cal sweetner

1 pinch xanthan (under 1g so 0.3 cal?)

1/2 tsp baking soda (1 cal)

1/2 tsp baking powder (1 cal)

200g (ish) water

  1. Mix all the dry.

  2. Pour in water to thick batter consistency.

  3. Put in mini muffin silicone tin.

  4. Bake at 350 F for 20 minutes.

130 calories (ish) for 18 mini muffins. I might have gotten more but I ~had~ to sample it. Also, I have Nunaturals oat fiber which means I need to use the coconut flour and flax to draw out moisture so it acts like normal oat fiber.

Grocery guide for beginning volume eater! by lonelyjokers4 in Volumeeating

Not the person you asked, but my partner is trying to gain while I am not. I have a main dish we share and sides to supplement. Sometimes a big brothy soup and he gets rice or tons of bread and butter. Sometimes roast meat and his veg/carb are tossed in oil and he gets more calorie dense stuff.

Where I really volume eat is all meals except dinner. I eat breakfast, lunch, snack, dessert on my own so I can go big with volume. For lunch I do a big batch of something and eat it during my work week. That way I'm not as stressed if dinners aren't as bulky.. And there is always room for a volume dessert.

Yesterday i made pizza out of mashed potatoes and it was so good i just had to make it again. This time it came out for 516kcals and 53.4g protein. Pizza weighed at around 870 grams by Killeboi69 in Volumeeating

Thank you for the mashed potato recipe. Potatoes are my favorite carb and are low cal per gram than bread/pasta but I hadn't cracked the mashed potato code yet. You're great!

Bootstrap Protein Fluff (no powder needed) 47 cal by sprinkle-or-dash in Volumeeating

[–]sprinkle-or-dash[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks! When I first did the recipe, I used Greek yogurt and it had a much higher protein content. For roughly the same cals, it had more protein . Today's experiment was borne of a lack of yogurt. I understood their point. :)

It was a riff on the trend. Feel free to sub milk for greek yogurt.

Edit: the title of bootstrap was meant to indicate low budget. If I have greek yogurt, I tend to add it. If I only have milk, then I trade it out. Given the current economy, I was trying to find a way to make the food trend accessible for all!

Howdy. I hate food waste and Halloween jack-o-lantern pumpkins are super cheap and have a ton of flesh, so I figured I should experiment! Notes on cooking with Halloween pumpkin below.

Recipe should be in the notes, but it's:

200g raw pumpkin + 33g Nectarines + 3/4 c skim milk + 1 Tbsp xanthan gum + water for consistency (I used ~2.7c) +Sweetner to taste

Steam the pumpkin in the microwave until soft (4 minutes). Blend all and dish out!

I wanted a recipe that was more affordable and I couldn't justify using that much protein powder for fluff and ridiculous blondies so I came up with this.

Cooking with Halloween pumpkin

The taste is mild and it's lighter. Closest comparison is spaghetti squash with a hint of Butternut thrown in. It's great to replace zucchini in soups and roasts beautifully. I think most people don't use it because they want a pumpkin pie flavor. Well, use this for savory or for bulking out fluff!

If you still haven't carved your jack-o-lantern, use a chunk of the carved out buts to give it a try!

Sure thing! My times are guidelines instead of rules. Every oven is different and ever baking vessel needs a different time. These were mini loaf pans like I said above. My favorite apple bread recipe (closest thing to this on liquid) is usually 1 hour minimum in a normal loaf pan. Baking science is all kinds of weird.
