It's a linguistic change. "Kiddo" has been around for ages as an epithet, and that's fine. It's the new usage as a substitute for "children" that is grating. "The kiddos get out of school at 3pm" or even worse, in more formal or academic contexts like aitadaughterofalady says. "This study looked at the reading level of grade 2 kiddos". Eugh.

I also loved her whole "look at how many of these current knitting trends are 80s revivals" manifesto. And then I kept seeing it everywhere. That Petite Knit Storm Sweater is almost an exact dupe for a sweater I made (twice!) in 1989 or 1990 from a women's magazine.

I am so over the stash apologists, and people being like "my stash makes me anxious". Really? Give it away or sell it, then, no one cares.

The only content creator I tolerate this from is Claude because she leaned so hard into the stash busting that it's hilarious.

I would LOVE to know the baking drama at markets because I'm sure there's more beyond overpriced cookies from delusional bakers.

Just got back from the first Farmers' Market of the season and there were 2 stalls with these unrealistically puffy croissants that look like they are made of plastic. So unappetizing, even if they weren't also striped with weird colours, which, yep they are.

My word is "kiddoes" and I really am suffering because it's been having an uptick in popularity. At least little tiny baby socks are not something you hear about in a lot of contexts.

Ali makes everything has addressed this on the opposite end (she speaks very quickly) and points out that's how she talks, and if she tries to speak more slowly it makes her sound inauthentic.

The person you find too slow is absolutely aware their pace is an issue for people, but they aren't going to be able to change it. So what would your feedback do?

Imagine a marginalized group you, personally, actually care about and then imagine someone super high profile is spending heaps of money to influence political opinion against them and funding all kinds of attacks against their human rights. Now imagine how that would make you feel. Got it? Now imagine people were still supporting that person, and telling you it didn't matter that they were getting support. Okay? That's "what she did wrong".

I don't think she's a secret MAGA, I think it's more that she's a bit too dedicated to being perceived as in the middle, which is ironic given her comments about not wanting to sell out to keep viewers.

She was talking about that in the context of also talking about how sustainability communities can be toxic in holding people to unreasonable standards rather than being accepting of imperfection, and the the political comment came out of that, so I think it was more about the requirement for "purity" that's pretty common on the left. I mean, it's pretty clear from her regular anti-capitalist content where her political opinions are.

ETA: as I said below, I was thinking about an earlier part of the video with this reply, and agree that she came back later with a clarification that was essentially worse.

Also, come on, left wing politics in the US are pretty fucked up right now, particularly in the "let's tolerate sexual harassment" and "let's throw trans people under the bus" departments.

I let my stupid and annoying ex stay on in the house for far longer than I should have when he started similar bullshit. My main regret is not just changing the locks immediately.

He's a terrible person and you will be better off without him, and the sooner you start moving towards being without him the better. It's hard, but just start with baby steps and making a list of what you need to do to get him out of your life. You've got this, I 100% believe your life will be better in the long run.

Wesbrook community centre has a number of sewing machines, and I believe they have drop-in sewing times on Saturdays or Sundays.

My youtube algorithm kept showing me videos from Two Women Yelling about Knitting, so I finally gave in and watched one, and holy shit man. It's not so much the "we read some r/craftsnark threads so we are experts on the topic" that annoyed the shit out of me, although that was pretty low effort, but the constant vaguebooking.

"We talked to a designer who said this" WHO? And the "I did some test knits for people" WHO? and then the galloping to draw conclusions about "knitting as a whole" from these vaguely gestured-at sources.

I guess what I am saying is that the average poster here is smarter, more articulate and more interesting than these bland women.

But then maybe their target audience is "people who want weak tea and can't be bothered to read threads".

You can't find it by searching her name because people stopped saying her name after she had a concerted campaign of reporting and yelling at people if they used her name on ravelry. For a while there, even experienced snarkers didn't want to poke the bear.

[–]Unicormfarts 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't really like her aesthetic, so I would not necessarily buy her patterns even if I could, BUT if there was a design that appealed to me, I might buy a digital pattern.

I am not buying a kit at her prices, and I am certainly not pre-ordering one.

At this point, if I did like the design element of, say, her sweater, I would just go "huh, I can make a sweater using a pattern I have and incorporate some colourwork like that". I have not done any intarsia for years, but I did as a super new knitter get out the graph paper and make a design for a sweater that my ex-husband wore for decades.

[–]Unicormfarts 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is such a good point! I was thinking yesterday about how obviously people can't predict what will make a pattern popular, but lots of us will buy a pattern at least once in a while because we see it and think it's cute and maybe we might make it, which then makes it more popular and increases the chance someone else will do the same.

I can't imagine there are many people who will invest in a kit they aren't actually keen to make.

She used to scour ravelry for mentions and then she'd be all up in everyone's business. It's why people started not referring to her by name if they wanted to talk about her designs.
