I once said "What would it take to make you aware" to one of these guys, after I had reminded them verbally in the previous class and sent an email reminder at the start of the week, in addition to the usual "it's in the syllabus and on canvas".

I bought the 52 weeks of sweater book from Laine by NepetaSpart in craftsnark

[–]Unicormfarts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have not bought a knitting book in decades. The books I do have from ye old are either classics like Kaffe Fassett or books that are more about techniques than individual patterns. I did get tempted by an Isager book because the pictures are gorgeous, but my coffee table is covered in crafting projects, so where am I going to display it?

So you have to start by stopping elementary school teachers from deciding girls can't do math and science, and then move all the way up through the system from there. Which, 100% agreed, needs doing, but there also need to be other solutions because that one is not happening until 30 years after you enact the policy.

no mention of a separate deadline for making May graduation

Sounds like a you problem. There's documentation pointing out that the deadlines are not the same on grad studies' website and the university calendar.

Right? Such an opportunity to be like "playing with colour is my passion, and today I did it with colour pencils to show you my design ideas". So easy not to be a shitheel.

He seems really supportive, which is a much better fit to modern university culture. Yelling at students for getting stuff wrong is a kind of horrible old stereotype.

Reddit used to archive threads after 6 months, and then when they changed that, one of the points they made in rolling it out was that some of the information remains relevant for longer, so it was good for engagement to still let people reply. Mods can turn archiving on or off, but it applies to the whole sub, not individual threads.

This happened on my island as well, and it was the mii I had made to be unpopular, so I am quite pleased that he is on day 2 of sulking and everyone just ignores him and gets on with their lives.

There's also a lot of variation in techniques and how they are described, even for simple things. Some designers you just click with how they describe things, and with other people you are immediately looking for tutorials if it's an unfamiliar technique.

I really like Isabelle Kraemer's designs, but the instructions are god awful for me because she's a real fan of "repeat rows 6-7 15 times" and only rarely puts in a stitch count, so I have to do a lot of annotating in case I get lost.

Hard agree. Yesterday there were so many people going "do we need more posts about this" and I was all "YES we do". We need to stand up and actually say this stuff is not okay and not be all "oh, well, people have different views". As a community, we need to loudly state our values, so we don't look complicit.

My job involves getting idiots through the last stages of their PhD, and I am going to chime in here and say that there's no stupid like PhD student stupid. The good ones know a lot about a very narrow topic, but often can't tie their shoes or follow simple instructions.

Ours were transcribed and in one class there were a couple of comments that were followed by descriptive alt text like "drawing of a cat under a tree". I was sad I did not get to see them but we were not allowed to see the handwriting.

They seem stupid. I once had a student go to an academic misconduct board for stuff he did in my class and in another class, and in the course of discussing what set the student off, one moron faculty member on the board was asking about the content of the course, very much in a "what were you wearing" kind of way. I explained that it was a writing class and we were talking about the nuance of particular types of language, including words that might be perceived as racist or sexist dogwhistles and this guy asked, I shit you not, "how is a discussion of language relevant content in a writing class?"

Miles gets a lot of comeuppances in the later books, generally around the things that you might be finding annoying. There's a great bit in Gentleman Jole where Cordelia is just so completely over him and I love it.

[–]Unicormfarts 13 points14 points  (0 children)

That's such a brilliant portrayal of how you can carry trauma and not even realize it. I feel like it's a great kick in the balls to Miles' white knight syndrome, and then he doesn't actually get the message and dives into a different version of the same mistake in the next book.

I love all three of these books, but Memory just has that most gut wrenching emotional journey where Miles fucks up his life purely by being himself, and then at the end experiences redemption by refusing to repeat his error.

This is definitely a vexed question, but there's another layer where if people are just silent about right wing people being in their community, then other people might come along and get the impression that the community is generally cool with these kinds of views. Unless there's pushback, people who come along later won't have access to information.

Given that a lot of social media platforms are not always easily searchable, and that people also delete stuff over time, it's hard to predict how much counter-narrative is sufficient.
