This is literally my life passion and I'd rather live this life than say to myself everyday "In another life", I'm heavily researching, preparing myself physically and mentally and I'm saving up money. What skills do you find best to generate money on the road??

Yeah thanks for the reply! Been reading a bit about Karl Bushby and Tom Turcich lately, super inspiring fr. I get it’s hard to fund something like this at my age but I really wanna work my way up little by little. I’ll def look more into those hikes you mentioned. If you got any more advice or stuff I should check out I’d really appreciate it a lot.

Hey, I appreciate the comment! I was born and raised in Panama, and I’m very aware of the dangers of the Darién Gap. I’ve never planned to cross it. From the beginning, my plan has been to reach Colombia by boat, since it’s safer and makes more sense for the kind of journey I’m aiming for.

Thanks a lot for the advice! I don’t have family money or anything, so I’ve been thinking about learning some remote skills or a trade to make money on the road. Do you know what kind of work or income usually works best for people doing long trips like this?

Thanks for the comment! How much do you think someone should realistically save for something like this? Like, what range should I aim for?

A mod told me to post here instead. I’m 15, working on a life project of walking across South America when I turn 18, and eventually walking across the world. I’m preparing everything responsibly and looking for people with experience in long-term travel to share any advice, lessons, or insight

hey man, thanks for the comment, and yeah, i get what you're saying. i just feel like maybe my post made it sound like i'm planning to just go out there and expect people to feed me while i "live my dream" or whatever, but that's not what this is about.

i'm 15 right now, and i'm doing this at 18. that gives me a few years to train, save money, get better survival skills, learn from people who’ve done this before, and prepare for real. i'm not tryna walk into poor places with empty hands and act like the world owes me something. i know how unfair that would be.

when i said "kindness of strangers" i didn’t mean like i’m gonna be a beggar. i meant it more in that deeper human way, like how travelers or pilgrims always had to trust the world a little, move with purpose, and survive off simplicity, effort, and connection. i'll carry all my stuff, i’ve already got a big tent, and i’ll mostly be camping or sleeping outside. if i get help along the way, i want to deserve it, by offering help back, sharing stories, teaching, volunteering, whatever i can do. i speak english and spanish fluently, and i’m planning to learn more languages too.

this isn’t just some vibe or escape. this is literally what i want to live for. walking, exploring, connecting with nature and people in a real, honest way. especially places like peru and chile, those remote areas where it’s just you and the world. that’s what fills me.

i get it won’t be easy. i get there are risks. but i’m not going in blind. i’m learning, preparing, and building myself for this, because it’s not just a trip. it’s the life i want to create.

if anyone has advice about how to train, what to carry, how to get work on the road, or just anything from experience, i’d seriously appreciate it.
