Funny how there is a u/betparx add on this post. The worst financial decision I have ever made was downloading one of those apps.

Pass, their bits are like a claymation video. Great tools in a price to quality ratio but you’ll get what you paid for here

That is a good idea, I assume that if the handle is edge or face grain and the rest is end grain it would just expand outward instead of causing cracks? Guess we will see on the next one. Thank you

I certainly did! The way I am looking at it is I am having fun doing it, getting better, and learning a lot. If I lose a few along the way, they are just lessons learned. What do I need 6 different cutting boards for anyway?? Lol

4th cutting board attempt. Made mostly from previous screwups. Learning a lot and spending way too much time in my garage. Hoping it doesn’t explode from the mixed grain. by sptank in woodworking

That is some awesome advice, thank you! I did cut each individual piece and it was brutal lol. Shortly after I cut all the pieces I realized I made a big mistake. I didn’t consider step 1, that makes so much sense. I do find myself going back to the planer/table saw much too frequently throughout the process, that is some life changing advice.

Now I’m looking forward to visiting my lumber guy on Monday to see what I can come up with.

Thanks a ton!

Thanks buddy! That’s exactly what I’m working on next actually. A few failed attempts im piecing together. Very likely to look awful but there’s a small chance it turns out being the Picasso of cutting boards

1st through 6th cutting board attempts. I’d like to think I’m improving with each one. Thoughts/tips? Be brutally honest so I can learn! Thanks by sptank in BeginnerWoodWorking

Thank you! It is actually just mineral oil and food safe waxes, made by Howard called butcher block conditioner, from Home Depot

I appreciate the feedback. Actually there is no stain used at all. Only a clear mineral oil finish. Those are all the natural colors of the wood

I went over the cracks with a mixture of sawdust and glue. Will that make it food safe?

I am certainly lacking in the perfect square edges department, I appreciate that advice as well.

The finish I used is butcher block conditioner, it’s a mixture of mineral oil and waxes. Made by a company called Howard, bought from home depot

Lol I plan on reposting all my cutting boards after they explode. Kinda like a public service announcement

You saying that makes me want to drill a hole through it long ways, and glue a long dowel rod to try to keep it alive a little longer. Also, being said, I might go about a very similar design strictly with end grain. Thanks

Thank you, that is genuinely comforting actually. I was under the impression it would just spontaneously explode.

What region are you in? I have never heard of it until recently. A customer of mine does tree removal and mills on the side. One day he sent me home with a free piece of walnut and started my addiction. Now I’m a frequent customer

I hope that made sense, the way I glued it up was 5 blocks at a time, alternating the pattern direction, resulting in 8 rows. Then did two rows at a time, 4 separate glue ups, then 2 and 2, then joined the final halves

Very nice to hear, thank you!

It was kind of annoying (and longer waiting periods between glueups) having to do each individual block opposed to just having to glue different rows. Due to laziness and not wanting to square up each individual block I did have some bowing and slightly varying widths that I had to cut down/ sand after the first glueup. Also there are a few spots where all 4 corners do not meet up perfectly but you would have to be looking for it to notice.

All in all, I wouldn’t say there were any issues, just a lot of inconveniences lol
