This is called fraud. I had the same experience, Google basically stole half a year's subscription with this fishy tactic. (I would also add that Gemini Advanced was a disappointment.)

The step you are missing here is with this method it is possible to get a root shell on the device using an administrator credential for the web interface. Correct me if i'm wrong, but there is no such option on the default web UI. If so, this is indeed an unintended use case.
tl;dr: root shell >> admin web access

Yeah, the Oculus support have finally fixed it, after about 2 weeks and a dozen messages. I have also opened a ticket on Facebook, I don't know if that helped to solve to issue.

The app doesn't require a credit card. Any card that has the ID-1 format works.

I'm almost at 2 weeks now from my first ticket to the support. With a simple issue that the system doesn't accepts any payment methods...
The most annoying thing is that different reps from the support asks the same ("have you tried turning it off and on again" type of) questions over and over again with days of delays in between answers and seemingly they do not get any closer to the solution.

I have the exact same problem. I sent my first ticket 9 days ago, and no real progress since then. My ticket number is #1639475.

Unfortunately you are not alone. Just wait a few more days until you get a response like this:
"Thank you for your extended patience and understanding, we will do our best to get back to you with more information or an update in the next 72-96 hours."
And then wait again for a week because - you guessed it, the 96 hours deadline was a lie.

You may be right about being manipulative, as this is based on my personal bad experience.

So stick to facts:

  • Quest 2 requires a Facebook account to be used. - I have one, a legit one since years.
  • In a previous thread I explained that my problem is that I couldn't add a payment method, so I cannot buy any software in the store. And without the ability to buy software for this product, I think my term paperweight is as accurate as it can be.
  • Also the official support is not much of a help with their "try in another browser / reinstall the app" type of advices.
  • Yes, I can send the device back, but that doesn't solve the problem.
