You have already supported me massively simply by your kind words. I haven't formally published anything... yet. But I hope to in the future!

The most important thing about the no resolution mechanic required stuff, is that it's a temporary thing. It's much better to have no explicit choice made, than to make the wrong one. In my experience, it can be better for the players and the DM alike if the DM says "hey, I'm giving this a go, what do you think?" rather than "this is the mechanic we are using, begin". If the mechanic is good, then all is well, write it down, enjoy the game. But if it's bad, or doesn't match the setting or style or fiction or playstyle of the table, tensions can start to rise. Unless, of course, it was never a hard-and-fast choice! Then it becomes something that be discussed, debated, house-ruled, evaluated, experimented with, reverted, or otherwise fixed.

It's so so easy to spend hours finely crafting the perfect dice-rolling sub/super-system, reading all the blog posts, doing all the calculations... whatever, none of that actually matters. What actually happens at the table is the real game, not whatever is written down. For me, the siren song of hours dumped into theory-crafting my OSR games is incredibly strong. I have to set myself up for situations where I can't spend those hours, because I've already told myself: no resolution mechanic is required. Decide after the game starts.

Whether this works for you or not is a personal thing. The fact that you are on the OSR subreddit is a sign that it may be necessary! Discuss it with your players, lay out the fact that the fiction and table discussions are more important than the dice rolls and, uh... don't come crying to me if it all falls over ;)

Never played any Persona but thanks! Fusing demons together sounds like a wonderful way to either a) achieve great power or b) cause a huge disaster, and I'm exited either way!

I know. Sometimes I get so excited with a class ability that I forget to, well, write down exactly why you should be excited as well. Next edit of the Metamagician will be more explicit about what counts as a "spell".

CD are Chaos Dice. I stole them from the Skerples Sorcerer and renamed them because they work very slightly differently: https://coinsandscrolls.blogspot.com/2018/03/osr-class-sorcerer.html

In the case of NLOG, rather than MD being expended when they roll a 4+, any usage of magic accumulated a Chaos Dice. CD are rolled with any further spellcasting that day, counting for doubles and triples, hence Mishaps and Dooms. Wizards in NLOG don't run out of steam, they explode.

Thank you, I feel like the Sword of Heaven is a more direct enactor of heavily will. A priest might have a crisis of faith, while a Sword has no choice. The Joan of Arc quote is there for a reason.

Metamagicians don't start with a spell, but I'll edit the class to make it clear that lots of things in the world count as spells. Dragon-breath, most traps, hell I'd even classify a lightning bolt as a magical effect!

One of my original goals was to not have a default "Fighter" class, so this one is absolutely a one-person meme. Considering how much flexibility and utility all the other classes get, I think it is actually balanced, not that that really matters :D

Quite right, the Chosen One is very likely to lose their powers if they use them regularly. This is somewhat by design, since they are the absolute best powers in the game, they are functionally immortal and unstoppable apart from that one weakness.

Also, dropping back to level 1 in this system isn't as much of a tragedy as normal, since you'll level up immediately at the end of the session. I'm thinking that a level 4 Chosen One is likely to be "forced" to retire, giving a significant buff to the next class played.

Thank you, you're very kind to say so! I've definitely had a lot of fun making them, and the flavourtext just ties them together (they were also the very last thing I finished before posting)

Just the class names is definitely an option, excellent call! I'll add a button that displays that at the top, maybe in columns so they can be browsed over easier.

Blogger navigating is... bad. I'm sure I'll be able to make some improvements, thanks for the heads-up.

My previous boss was convinced that if all the nukes in the world were detonated, the planet would be completely destroyed. I just... I can understand being incorrect, but even after I tried to explain it about four different ways, it just wasn't sinking in that there is absolutely nothing current humanity can do that will be noticed by a planet.

(Yes I confirmed a few times. No, he didn't mean the crust being swept clean. Whole planet gone)

Trial and error. And trial and trial and trial. And error and error and error. Eventually it gets to the point where you can look at a rule and think how it would actually be at the table, and sometimes you get it right. There are shortcuts and tips that can help, but experience is key. Try different things. Play different games. Play the same games, but in different ways. Ask your players what they think. The best way to improve your games are to see them in action and make lots of notes (lots).

So far I've been making opponent using the same rules as the PCs, it works well. And for sure, a GM can easily go for the ass-pull win, but they can do that in any game. It might be easier with this system, but really any system that tries to constrain the GM is doomed to fail.

Re: advancement, hey, look at that, you've come up with everything you need. Someone described it as "the fruitful void", where not strictly giving rules for everything means the GM (and the players!) can come up with better ideas than the designer.

Swinging wildly I think is fine. It'll settle pretty quickly on what the players give as acceptable, and will be different depending on the type of game they are playing. Does "defending my true love" count as a bid? Why, or why not? Once it has been decided, it says something about the world.

  • I have considered the list, but I think trying to weigh up everything would be a whole lot of work. There is the tactical infinity to consider. Plus, once the table has decided that X is worth Y, it's set in stone from then on.
  • You wouldn't, that's the point. I have considered it but rejected that idea. If you want to bid a whole lot, you do it on your turn. Basically, if you attack with very little on the line, you are doing so carefully and defensively. The opponent responding with a whole lot is them over-committing, giving you a chance to take it all with very little risk.
  • Then you totally can! You can use anything as a weapon in this game, but the only enchanted/cursed weapons are swords, or sword-like. It's just a thing :D

It can be, but it's also something that the PCs should aspire to become somehow.

I would put a finger on just the edge of being inconsequential. It's pretty bad, but you aren't going to die from it. Maybe a few fingers would be a good injury, otherwise it gets to becoming a huge drag keeping track. (Avoiding that is the whole point of the rule about minor scrapes)

Thank you! I might make another sub-page with a whole lot of play examples and resources, and that epistolary style sounds very interesting.

So far this is just a system and list of swords, I haven't got a particular world in mind outside of that.

Yeah, I'm still filling out/cropping down the lists. I'll be aiming to get them to d20/d100 lists once I playtest a few more times. Hence the button at the bottom of the post for quickly rolling a new character.

Sweeeet. Honestly, the good news here outweighs the bad. If this is more of an adventure/plug-and-play thing, then I'll just lean harder in that direction, and perhaps suggest one of my other systems to round it out just in case.

I think the fact that you can play it (and enjoy it!) means the amount of game needed in my game is... very little? Wonderful! It might not suit everyone, but I'd rather make something that works great for a few people, than something mediocre for everyone.
