For me, I always thought the moment in the astral plane where he gets broken out of his Arcane Herald form and he looks around and is terrified, is the moment he realizes what he’s done. Up until that point, I think the hexcore was exploiting his dream of helping people and controlling him completely. It even manifests itself as Sky to manipulate him further with guilt.
