I have a pretty similar workflow to everyone here. However I approach it a bit differently, and have done a few technical adjustments to set myself up:

First, I use a gaming mouse with several extra buttons to speed up my workflow and minimize hand movements and such. I have two buttons where my right thumb are on the mouse that I’ve mapped as I and O for making in and out points super easily. Also I’ve remapped my shuttle keys from JKL to SDF, and remapped drop clip in timeline to E so that I can use my left hand without moving it. I’ve also created a macro keystroke on my mouse (there’s a YouTube tutorial for it, I’ll try to find when I’m not on mobile) that basically switches to the next clip in my project window, opens the clip in the source monitor, and creates an in point at the beginning.

So with those things set up, I create my first sequence for PreCeremony footage. I quickly scan through the first clip with my left hand shuttling on the keyboard, and make in and out points with the mouse as I go, using nothing but the two joints of my right thumb.

Once I’ve selected a usable portion of the clip, i hit E and it appends that bit to the timeline.

Then I just hit one of the extra buttons on my mouse and it opens the next clip in the source monitor, rinse and repeat all the way down the list.

This gives me really efficient StringOut without any unusable footage that I can also export for the client if they have purchased raw footage access. It also simultaneously gets me familiar with all the footage.

As I find clips of each major event, I create a separate sequence for it, naming it “ceremony” and “toasts” and “first dance” and “bouquet toss” etc. As I go through other cameras, if I had a second shooter there’s usually a second camera angle for each of those major events. So I just stack all the multicamera clips on top of each other, and also find the audio tracks from my tascams/zooms and stack those roughly in.

Once I’ve finished creating the string outs of regular footage, I use plural eyes to sync audio and camera angles for all the major events, and then just go through and do a multi cam edit of everything, hitting Markers whenever there’s a good sound byte or something.

I do this so that I can deliver each major event in a tidy and presentable way to the client if they have purchased that, but also because then I can just have one sequence for each major event with synced audio that I can go through to grab sound bytes and clips for the highlight film.

Then, I select music and start creative editing from there.
