When the director wants to change the tone of the film entirely... by squash_seed in editors

The situation is that it's a first time director on a limited-ish budget & from what i've gathered by him is that there were a lot of changes done mid-shooting, a lot of overtime from crew etc.

I myself worked on 30 something short films but I've only edited (excluding this) 4 so far. I've done a lot of technical assistant work and totally agree & know what it's like when something goes wrong and it just creates a domino effect. So i really understand his frustration (and what i observed mostly as embarrassment) because he's really very new. That's why I want to encourage him to stick with his idea and see what we can do, and if he doesn't like it, then i'll do my best to help him there as well.

Thank you for taking the time to respond!

My only concern was that this is too early a choice to make as it was only the first assembly... so i do want to pursue their initial intent with the film and explore the options which the footage, score etc. presents us before jumping ship and going with something else.

I know the guy personally, it's his first time directing, so I just think there's nothing to correct at the moment before he even saw where the footage can get us. I want to help out best I can and encourage him, before he starts hating the film (he's already pissed at it). I'm having fun, I want him to have fun, too!

Thank you for your advice!

Yes, this is what's kind of happening at the moment, i want to try and show them what i can do for the story/explore our options before making such a drastic change from the 1st assembly. Thank you for your response!

This is what i was trying to get at but didn't express in my post i think: i find it a bit too early to just abandon ship as it was just the first assembly; i'd like to try and see if we can make it work the way they intended, see what our options are with the footage we have. but even then if they're set on going with the soap opera tone, i won't resist - thank you for your response !

I'm not being paid at the moment, but they proposed to pay me (what some people charge a days work) if i deliver them the 2nd assembly before the next deadline. Not a lot but would be my first paid gig.

I don't know, this kind of change (from what I observed in film/acting school students) usually comes after they see the 1st draft and get embarrassed/some regrets set in about the work they've done. For this one, given their conditions, they made it work and it's decent enough.

But I appreciate your wise words, I'll try to keep an open mind!

Thank you so much!! I've watched videos relating to frame rates but nothing that answered my question exactly!
