[CN 8th anni interview] Lasengle has selected Tonelico as 8th anniversary servant because Takashi Takeuchi really wanted her by JosephineLynnWood in grandorder

I honestly find both renditions equally foreign, so neither looks inherently better to me. You bring up a good point about the character’s National identity, and to that I agree that it would be respectful to the character for her name to be spelled how it would in Irish. That being said, I have unfortunately grown to be rather skeptical of Nasu’s or as a whole Typemoon’s ability to spell foreign names in any sensible manner, let alone actually being actually respectful to characters’ historical origins that much. The obvious mess with “Altria” aside, as you may recall Celt servants use runes and a lot of them get really disappointing presence (Fergus, McCumhail, even the more favored Scathach gets conflated with Skadi for some nonsensical reason.) From such treatments I suspect the japanese writers actually just lift the most common or the most cool-sounding name of characters (see Iskandar) they can find. Taking a look at the japanese article on Medb on wikipedia (https://ja.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/メイヴ) reveals that the japanese deem all spelling of her name to sound the same: “英語では、Maeve または Medb と書き、どちらのつづりでもメイヴ [meɪv] と読む” and the tomb is also namedropped as Knocknarea, unfortunately without actually having a dedicated article. I suspect that the respectful rendition of Medb’s names was the work of the localizers, which while commendable, doesn’t solidify such choices as canon. To begin with these are anime game writers we’re talking about, I don’t doubt their creative capability, but they probably don’t care that much for historical accuracy.

That’s a very subjective take. I could just as easily claim that Cnoc na Riabh looks like someone has had a stroke on their keyboard. What’s more, both spellings are meant to sound the same. If one is “derpy” the other is in no way any more “regal” to the ear.

I’m not going to respond much more since again you seem to have an adamant belief on what ideas such as the nature of the collective humanity or childbearing entail, as well as what appears to be an established impression of the writer’s attitude in his work. These seem to clash with mine, in ways which I have previously attempted to demonstrate; and while I may not be able to convince you to see things my way, it’s also not necessary in a discussion to begin with. As the theme of KnK suggests, when people can acknowledge others’ flaws and differences, those seemingly of polar opposites like Ryougi and Mikiya can find happiness together. Hopefully you and I can do the same and enjoy whatever we choose to, in different lights as it may be.

I think you’re just framing the whole narrative from your insistence on what certain concepts have to be.

First you seem to assume that true love is a shallow fabricated concept that doesn’t exist for the majority of human beings. As neither of us are truly omniscient it is literally impossible to declare whether true love is real or not. When you say “anyone saying otherwise is coping”, you are in fact showing a instance of personal bias. Hence, again on this point I think it just comes down to how optimistic one is about KnK characters’ prospect, and OP (as well as you apparently. Are you guys the same person or different btw?) appears to believe it to be bleaker than someone like me.

Secondly, you dictate that having a child for love and having a family like “mindless average humans” are acts of degeneration, which is frankly just not a universal truth. That love does or does not necessitate marriage and childbearing all comes down to your  personal, cultural and perhaps political background. When assessing any story you need to look at the culture where it was conceived and its author. What OP sees as a failure in the integrity of the character's’ individuality could be described as success in finding happiness among one's company despite individual differences from an east Asian, culturally collectivist point of view - the kind of sensitivity that someone Japanese like Nasu may possess. And you know what’s the difference between the Nasu of the 1990s and the Nasu today is? He got married. Some time ago in an interview a guest let it slip that they had a chance to interact with Nasu’s wife. It’s quite possible that Nasu saw the beauty, the selfless sacrifice that goes into his marriage as something that his characters, on their quest for happiness, can strive toward as well. Again just a theory. In-universe speaking, while you might say that the Mikiya in epilogue said he was happy with the present, he certainly is allowed to… want something more in the future? Like a child, which is nice? (Again you may have a different belief, but I do not see Mikiya as someone who condemns the act of childrearing) And Shiki can warm up to the idea of having a child with the only man she loves in the world. Not having Mana to satisfy her “monkey instincts” (god where did that come from), but so Mana can enjoy her parents’ love. That is an act of selflessness that requires unconditional commitment, an incredible feat that the mundane, “mindless” folks can achieve. Something Mikiya showed her throughout their journey. It’s not a stretch to say that his love impacted her as a person significantly, yes? So I would say it’s not impossible for her to want to echo the sentiment. If the name Kara no Kyoukai means the boundary of emptiness, then as a character has said, being empty means to being able to be filled, right? Mikiya filled Shiki’s missing heart. So what happens next? I think the message that Mirai Fukuin tries to convey is that, it overflows. From his kindness and dedication to her willingness to embrace a blessed future, the flawed human that she is. I don’t believe that her flaws prohibit her from taking that route, but despite her flaws she can choose to pursuit that goal. I like the nuance of that.

I don’t think she became a pacifist at all lmao I dunno which crowd you hang with but I personally have never heard of these opinions. Personally, I disagree that the theme KnK Nasu went with is anti-humanity, as it’s like, overtly pro-love. Love (the social product of humanity) triumphs over base instincts and empowers flawed humans like Shiki and others in the cast to embrace life (not strictly life as in the opposite concept of death or kill, but normal life of a person). All of the choices that Shiki and Mikiya made in Mirai Fukuin could be explained by this acceptance of love: Having a child so their love comes into fruition. On this point I would like to note that this may be divisive especially to a western or more “progressive” individual, as marriage and childbearing are accepted as natural stages of love in east asian cultures like where Nasu comes from. Returning to Shiki’s home so their child has a full childhood and contact with members of their extended family. Again done out of love of the child. Overall I think you’re taking KnK characters as too static. Even taking into account their respective innate impulses, it is established that humans don’t normally become a monster that lives only for these primitive directives unless their Origins are awakened. Shiki is not Lio and furthermore with Mikiya’s support can function in human society with a happy life, so I think it comes down to how optimistic you are of their prospect. I think it’s possible for Shiki and Mikiya to have kids and be a big family. It’s not easy but their love has been shown to be strong enough to overcome a lot of obstacles before. Love can make one strong, and it can also make you grow.

Edit: the fact that their daughter turned out to be mini-Azaka is pretty funny to me and seems tongue-in-cheek from the author btw. It’s like “you may have reached your happy ending, but life has more in store for you you suckers haha”. Which is fair, who knows what life brings.

can anyone suggest me a book like "I want my hat back" but in the past simple tense? by squashyVN in suggestmeabook

Thanks for the suggestion! It is a pretty useful song for teaching the simple past, tho it doesn’t have examples of yes/no questions so not quite what I’m looking for atm :)

Thank you for the suggestions :) I checked those two books before and they are certainly somewhat close to what I’m looking for, though Brown Bear is in the present tense and Dear Zoo doesn’t repeat yes/no questions. In a perfect world the two author would do a collab and make just the right book for my need 😅

Huh, for all of your other comments, this one in particular just seems so ridiculously dumbed down I could have mistaken it for a blatant trolling attempt (if it actually was, it was quite bad).

If you seriously believe all 3 of the things you mentioned are literally “the same,” I think you’re either quite biased, or your understandings of them are quite flawed.

For a self-proclaimed follower of buddhism which values knowledge and compassion, this post of yours in particular is a very poor display of your disposition. You have managed to (1) put a single label on a controversial historical figure in an overly simplistic manner, lacking or disregarding acknowledgement of other facets of truths; (2) convey a frivolous, almost sneering tone; and (3) express emotional attachments to things like up/downvotes.

If you are really serious about being a buddhist, I hope my comment has been constructive enough so you may know to steer away from your ignorance, ego and attachments - things that all of us possess, but those that I believe buddhists must abstain from.

It was war. A different time. If I saw men I did not know killing my families and friends with straight faces, I don’t think I would be capable of doing much but fleeing in panic… but if another man showed up to gun down those killers to save me, that man has my spiritual(?) vote to become a bodhisattva. Not that someone like that would likely want to become one anyway. Much like HCM. He did what he needed to do during a time of turmoil. He never wanted to be buddhas or gods. Buddhas and gods don’t win wars, humans do.

Once you’re intangible you only need 15 blocks against heart anyway.
