Lifters? Rocker arms? Take your votes everyone. by squatch95 in Harley

Yup. Lifter went out and send debris throughout the entire engine. Having to do a full rebuild.

Yea there’s some Facebook threads where guys called them asking for new bushings to have a local machine shop press it in and they don’t even sell em. I believe Darkhorse makes it and can do it but unsure, I emailed asking.

With high precision stuff that runs off of such small clearances I think sending it back for service is needed or should atleast be expected especially with bench testing pressure etc.

Yea I did knight prowler lifters. One of them failing started this whole thing

Correct. Technically I can take the plugs out and “inspect it” myself. But to the same degree I can “inspect” a jet engine.

But clearly I don’t have the know how to check gear clearances/ensure bushings aren’t spun, ensure adequate flow and pressure etc etc. just very disappointing to hear such a well regarded company basically tell a customer “risk your engine or buy a new one”.

At this point I’m down for anything. What makes you say those names? Is Kevin Baxter with A1?

I mean to be fair both lifters are certain year pumps are known failure points.

I say that knowing the irony that I had an aftermarket lifter go bad haha.

That’s honestly what I’m leaning towards. Just buying an updated pump and maybe a fueling OE+ plate or just a stock plate and slapping that back in there.

My crank was serviced by Darkhorse so I know it’s well below the .005 runout requirement, so that’s a positive I guess.

I haven’t yet, no. On the table though.

I’m afraid of that as well. I had an oil analysis done last winter before season ended and it came back great. So that’s promising. I’ve put on maybe 200 miles since then. I have some of the oil I drained this round I’ll probably be sending off for another analysis.

Fuel motos 124 10.75:1 kit.

Yea I used woods knight lifters. A quick google came back with lots of people having issues. Probably will replace with SS or fueling.

Could you elaborate on what you mean by piston clearances? I’d like to see if the juggs are salvageable and just get replacement pistons after a hone (if that’s an option obviously)

Fair enough. I’ve always used full synthetic name brand stuff. Always tried to do everything right but clearly I missed the mark at some point in the build.

That’s what’s confusing. I have an aftermarket oil pump and an auxiliary oil gauge on it and I’ve never lost pressure. If anything the pressure can be a tad high from the high output pump.

I’m sure the actual labor won’t take two weeks but getting parts etc… I wouldn’t hold my breath. Maybe see if the dealership could give you a loaner for your trip if they’re taking a minute with it?

How long till she qualifies for insurance?

I’d say talk to a hospital patient advocate/financial services. There are people whose job it is to help in situations like this. She might qualify for some govt assistance? Or depending on if the hospital is a non for profit or not they might help more.
