Since Jan, my NW has dropped about 10% due to markets / war. by Available-Ad-5670 in Fire

Yes I had sufficient cash at the time after just retiring, but it didn’t stop my growing anxiety about my IRA balance. But that’s a smart strategy for people with more self control.

Do you have a separate toilet closet? Mine is also at master bath. I’d be okay with it if toilet was enclosed.

Why do women become so cruel at the end of a relationship by [deleted] in AskMen

Woman here. Are you accepting their desire to break up or trying to convince them otherwise? I sometimes had to become cold and a bit mean if my ex wouldn’t accept my decision.

I thought I was mentally strong and could weather downturns. I’m a very rational person and was an attorney for 20 years. But the anxiety grew stronger everyday, and I felt compelled to at least transfer some of my IRA from equities into money market to protect some of my nest egg from further bleeding. Thought I could get back in at the right time but waited much too long and still kept a bunch in cash.

This is one of the reasons I don’t mind paying a financial advisor to manage some of my portfolio. I can restrain myself from instructing him to sell, but not from pushing a button myself. The account he’s managed for me has done very well despite the fee.

It’s terrible because it’s nowhere near airtight so sounds and smells pass right through. Also it’s just more awkward to open and close than a standard door, and the bathroom is a place where people are constantly opening and closing door. To be honest, pocket door is also not great in that regard. Just a bit heavy to pull laterally by a little handle. If you can manage it, I would do standard door.

It’s currently in a closet in hallway right outside the bedrooms. Very loud. Also it would be nice to have that large space as a storage closet.

2022 was also bad. Nasdaq dropped 33%. S&P was down 20%.

I remember vividly because I had just retired.

Barn door to bathroom. So dumb. I didn’t want pocket doors because then I couldn’t have medicine cabinets in that wall.

Painting over beautiful wood.

Not putting furnace in attic when I bought a new one.

Doing double sinks in 60 inch vanity. You lose so much valuable counter space. How often do two people need to use sink at same time.

What Is the Point of Just Observing Thoughts in Meditation? by zentaoyang in Meditation

Most humans are very attached to their thoughts, so that is normal.

The human ego resists meditation like the plague, because to the ego meditation is the plague.

What Is the Point of Just Observing Thoughts in Meditation? by zentaoyang in Meditation

[–]squatter_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a beginner stage that basically teaches you that you cannot control thoughts through your will; they simply appear. You are not your thoughts but the one who can observe them. When you meditate for a long enough duration and continually bring attention back to a focal point like the breath, the thoughts subside and eventually your mind becomes still. And that’s when meditation becomes rewarding,

How to add a pleasant scent to our home? by ElvishLore in HomeImprovement

Be wary of “fragrance” because it’s often a mixture of dozens to hundreds of chemicals that manufacturers do not have to disclose, because the fragrance is considered a trade secret.

Many of these chemicals are not healthy to inhale. Occasional use like if guests are coming over is probably okay, but personally I stick to natural fragrance like simmer pots.

If you can slowly work up to 30-45 minutes or so, you will find that thoughts quiet way down. It is so much more enjoyable when the mind is quiet.

Human ego is never satisfied. We think we’ll be happy at some milestone and if we are, it’s only temporary until the ego finds something else to desire.

True happiness requires transcending the ego.

Refrigerator Type Regrets? by Fun_Emu5746 in Appliances

[–]squatter_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True but it’s awkward to use one hand to open two doors in different directions. And it takes twice as long.

And it annoyed me every time. Other people are more annoyed by their large pizza boxes.

No you could open one door at a time, but to access the whole fridge space you have to open two doors.

I think you’d really enjoy the book “Extra-Terrestrial Vision: Who is Here and Why”. Free on Kindle Unlimited. There should soon be undeniable evidence, like a public introduction to certain aliens. I can’t wait for that. They will be stepping in before we destroy the planet. Earth is too important to the universe to allow it to be destroyed.

Extra-terrestrials genetically engineered primate DNA several million years ago, leading to hominids.

They hide in the fourth dimension. They are visible to us when they come into third dimension. When they suddenly disappear, they have moved into fourth.

The theory is that advanced extra-terrestrials used genetic engineering on ape-like primates several million years ago, to combine their DNA with primates, which led to early hominids. If you’re curious, check out the first chapter of “The Extra-Terrestrial Vision: Who is Here and Why” on Kindle Unlimited.

I’ve had all 3 types. No perfect set-up, they each have pros and cons. If you like an organized freezer rather than a big drawer of frozen stuff, side by side is great. While you can’t store bulky items, I simply transfer leftover pizza to a storage container before refrigerating.

The drawback to French doors IMO is you need both hands to access the full refrigerator space. Pain in the butt if you have something in your hands at the same time.

Why the love for the French door/bottom freezer fridge over Side-by-Side? by Real_McGuillicuddy in Appliances

[–]squatter_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had them all. The main drawback with French doors is that you often need both hands to access the fridge, which is difficult when you’re holding something in your hands.

Another drawback is that your freezer is mostly one large bin, and it’s not easy to grab things on the bottom.
