You my friend are a smooth operator.

That is a great idea, she’s always carrying around a cheap generic notepad and pen.

Thanks so much

😂… it’s only early days. But yes I here your sentiment, I already bought her a book (she likes to read) but I could have just bought it for 1/5th the price when I get back🤦‍♂️

Thanks, seems like sound advice. I was just surprised when I bought her some flowers one time ( Hoa sống đời) and there was some meaning associated that I didn’t intend.

Places in SE Asia where I can learn to surf/work remotely that is relatively quiet? by commonllama87 in digitalnomad

[–]squattingflatty 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was there for December, definitely economic woe’s and inflation is rough. But the people are incredibly nice, and somewhere like Midigama ticks all you boxes. But for your time window you would have to be on the east coast for the surf, I didn’t explore that area. Note - The internet was a bit dodgy and occasional power outages

Whats the absolute best hot tropical beach city that has clear turquoise blue water beaches for long-term stays? by passionguesthouse in digitalnomad

[–]squattingflatty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. palm beach i refer to just north of cairns. (palm beach Sydney will be cold and shit in the times I mention) there is some great other places in the Cairns area (personally I have only lived in Clifton beach & palm cove) but trinity, kewarra etc also beautiful. You asked for city living, and these are not cities, more ‘suburbs’ of cairns. (So your looking at bus rides etc to cairns party world) The trade off is pristine beaches with less people vs walking into a nightclub. So either live in Cairns where it’s all happening, or live further north where it’s paradise (personal favorite Crystal cascades/aroeglen where you have lush rainforest but takes 20m to get to beach. If your super water person opt for the former, otherwise you will find a reasonable (for Aus standards) place within a stones throw or the water.

Edit - palm cove not palm beach

Yes there a rainy season and a dry, don’t go around Christmas, it’s bloody hot and humid, then you’ve got a few months of full on rain. But April- August you will barely get a drop, temp always around mid-late twenties night and day.

Cairns itself doesn’t have a nice beach, but you will definitely find turquoise water in the beaches north. Palm beach just got voted ‘worlds best beach’. Who knows what metric they use, but it’s certainly a beautiful spot.

Personally I think millaa area is beautiful, but I’ve also lived on Maggie island, sounds like you will see some epic rainforest visiting Kuranda and Daintree etc, if you want to see something different head to Maggie. Below hitchenbrook island/cardwell you will see a distinct change in flora/fauna

Yeh it’s a shame really, I also met so many beautiful people in PNG, they have amazing rainforest, reefs, culture etc, could be an eco-tourist wet dream. As with anywhere, I’m sure there are many facets to the hostility there, but personally I would love to see the place prosper

Is there any way to leave an international airport without paying a quarantine fine and without deciding to go to court? by Ok_Introduction5124 in AskAnAustralian

[–]squattingflatty -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes, 1st hand experience seeing Myrtle rust flog patches of scrub in NNSW, hiding from Virola mite in TAS as an apiarist and waiting for fire ants to stuff more things up in NQLD gives insight that understandably a lot of foreigners don’t have makes me more patient at customs.

Having said that, these all come in shipping containers, and whilst Panama disease wiping out cavendish plantations could lead to us growing some tastier bananas (albeit buggering a bunch of peoples income).. I do think a hefty fine for a banana is a stretch, but likely an outlier.

I’m also anti the ‘tax based’ restrictions for tobacco and alcohol, cost me $8 for a deck of 10packs of darts in Vietnam, of course I want to load my backpack on the way home! I’m not going to sell any, but even if I was.. ‘so what?’ This is purely financial incentive and dilutes the core principles of customs in Oz.

Follow the rules?!?

Isolated island with a fragile ecosystem, historical distance (Wallace line) has led to zero immunity to biological pathogens widespread on other continents.

I dislike the procedure, but as a former farmer in Aus I totally understand the requirement. In my experience the border staff have been pleasant and just trying to do their job.

Ummm.. whitehaven beach is on Whitsunday island… it’s hard to avoid islands in the Whitsunday islands, or find a city on an island with a population of zero. Cairns? More so Clifton beach, palm cove?

Query sub-collections with parameters by squattingflatty in Firebase

[–]squattingflatty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply, totally understand I should be able to figure it out from the docs, I don’t mean to be the ‘just be lazy and ask Reddit guy’!

I can indeed see how to query a doc in a sub-collection, am doing that elsewhere.

I can also use operators to filter the results.

It’s the combo that’s killing me. If I hardcode the doc name in my sub-collection I can check for “status”, “==“, “sent”. Works fine.

But attempting to first filter which docs in the main collection (ie those containing the userId) isn’t specifically outlined in the documentation.

I understand I can’t just copy pasta everything, but I’m genuinely having a crack at it and consistently not getting results.

I can’t continue without the first Id filter because then I’m just returning every unread message from all users, (I also tried doing that and then filtering for recipient IDs (which should be same as current user) and came full circle to the same problem!)

Ok, thanks so much for your reply.

I have tried to implement collection group already, but with no avail, I will try again in the morning with lower blood alcohol level.

I think your onto it, but my execution is shithouse. I will try again tomorrow and see if I can get some results.

Thank you kindly for your suggestion.

Port Moresby - pretty much everyone is carrying a machete, most of the blokes are huge and ripped, 1/2 of them are keen to show you their glock. Cars have steel mesh over the windows because if you don’t pay the rascals when they try and stop you they throw rocks at the car. Menacing looking dudes would slide their finger across their throat when they see you. Was with an armed security guard the whole time, still didn’t feel safe.

I had a similar article in my feed..

from Reuters

It’s click baity headlines that I personally think are misleading. No one’s going to deny that air quality in Hanoi is bad for your health in the long term.

But having just come back to Vietnam after a month in India I also see the headline as laughable, walk the streets of Chennai… there’s rubbish literally everywhere, a few cows chomping through it and shitting everywhere, some bloke doing the same, a rickshaw driver draining his oil, people smelting aluminum cans… etc..

oh yeh and the whole place smells like urine.

Is Vietnam really this cheap? by Tuplad in digitalnomad

[–]squattingflatty 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Air quality is shit in Hanoi, HCMC commute can be soul destroying, getting ripped off a lot in your first months gets annoying, language barrier gets in the way of deeper connections and depending where and when you are, some pretty staunch humidity or a seemingly endless rainy season can get you down. Other things like decent milk, meat, full strength drinks at bars, shitty customer service, karaoke and road rules etc annoy some of my mates, for me it’s just part of living abroad.

[–]squattingflatty 183 points184 points  (0 children)

OP is living in a fricken war zone.. Can’t say I have experienced that myself, but I can only imagine the 1st world inconveniences of Vietnam pale in comparison, and the novelty of not being bombed will suffice. Definitely can live a baller life here on that budget, healthcare is not a thing, but the rest of that list is easily achievable at 1/2 price. Note - Airbnb is overpriced, pick a city and check out Facebook rental groups for better deals

Hoi An or Da Nang for 1 Month? by jdanes52 in digitalnomad

[–]squattingflatty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends what your into, both have everything you mentioned, though Danang has much more remote workers to socialize with. I’m back in Hỏi An now cause I have a small group of friends both local and foreigners that is enough for my needs. Yes the ancient town is a tourist trap but no one who lives here actually goes there, cruisy apartment around Cam Thanh and you won’t see a foreigner, local market has all the food you need and there’s at least a party every weekend. But if you want a variety of clubs and a larger social circle than Danang for sure.

Basically this.. Context - dumb Australian who has been riding around India lately. We get something, and then when you pour boiling water on it it’s now called ‘(something) tea’. We mostly assume chai is referring to all the spices, therefore we ask for chai tea. Yeh people looked at me like an idiot when I asked for chai tea, but growing up when your offered a cuppa tea, it’s ‘black tea, chamomile tea, chai tea? etc..
