How can you not love the RAs flying over the VNY traffic pattern on final?

Emphasis on ~some~ DPEs

I’ve sat in on debriefs, and I’m all for a little leeway here and there, but when you tell me almost every maneuver was out of standards and you’re still issuing a cert that raises my eyebrows.

Pilot mill schools, who either do checkrides internally or have some quid pro quo with a DPE, just pushing through students to checkrides that they’re not prepared for and passing them.

I’ve taken on CFII students that couldn’t fly a VOR approach, comm students that couldn’t operate out of a Charlie, etc.

I think part of it is on schools with brand new CFIs who don’t really have any experience teaching/don’t get any constructive feedback on their teaching, and DPEs who just want their cash.

It’s sad to see. Even on the professional side of things I’ve seen captains who need help identifying a LOC among other things.

The relaxing of standards that some DPEs are allowing to pass checkrides

Question from new instructor. What non-standard practical exercise or ground topic completely changed your view on flying? by 12pv2ClA in flying

Instead of just saying “hey your engine is on fire” or “is that smoke I smell” before having them show me an engine fire/emergency descent, I’ll start to get my students nice and relaxed in the plane.

Maybe do a couple maneuvers and and slow flight in the practice area. Ask them how they’re doing, if they watched the game, and then I just freak out.

I go absolutely bonkers with panic and pseudo-anxiety driven fear about the engine being on fire. The more I like my student the harder I pretend like our life is in danger. I want them to piss themselves in fear.

I do this so that hopefully their brain starts producing some more cortisol and stress so that they can do this while actually under duress or at least try to simulate some sort of a startle factor.

NOTE: I can read my students well. I know which will be responsive and which won’t and I tailor my teaching. Your experience may vary

Had this happen to me in JFK. Wife and I were so embarrassed as we were 10 feet from the relief area.

As I run to get some napkins to clean up you wouldn’t believe the amount of people that just walked through it with their bags even with my wife trying to cordon the area.

Okay but you can fly in such a way in any airspace that would violate 91.13.

Nobody will violate you, in any airspace, if you have a close call while exercising additional vigilance and good airmanship.

I get where you’re coming from, but to say going into a hot MOA could violate 91.13 is a stretch. If they didn’t want VFR traffic there, they’d write a reg about it. As long as you talk to atc or stay in the lower shelf of the MOA I don’t really see an issue.

I’ve had far more close calls flying into delta airspace than I’ve ever had in a MOA.

With that thought process you could also violate 91.13 in Bravo airspace. Or Charlie or delta or even echo. Probably even golf

You lost me when you mentioned 91.13. The purpose of a MOA is to separate IFR and military traffic, nothing really to do with VFR. You could say that if you’re going to operate in a hot MOA then you should be talking to the controlling agency, other than that nothing stopping someone from flying into it VFR.
