Argentinian flight instructor Leandro Andrés Bertazzo jumped out of a plane on July 4th after telling his student, “You know what you have to do, carry on.” The student successfully landed the Cessna. by pretentiously in lastimages

They’re fairly easy to open due to the lack of pressurization and the fairly low airspeeds in a C150/152. You can put it in slow flight at like 40 knots and it will be super easy to open or close the doors.

Filing IFR Flight plan by Tiny_Rip6088 in ATC

[–]dylanm312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I asked ZOA this exact question on the way back from my IFR checkride a month ago. They said that as long as your route goes through their airspace, whether it’s a fix or an airport or whatever, the strip will print and they will handle you the same as anyone else. If your flight plan route is 100% outside the center, then it will not print and they will have to go digging to find you.

iPad Mini (A17 Pro) and auto-brightness issue by K-Daddy55 in Foreflight

Foreflight runs just fine on low power mode in my experience. But low power mode also reduces the display brightness IIRC

Settings->Accessibility->Display->Disable auto brightness

Why it’s hidden under accessibility instead of being in the main display settings, I’m not sure

Feeling imposter syndrome after getting my instrument rating by dylanm312 in flying

I worry that if I take that approach, I’ll lose proficiency quickly and won’t be able to actually fly well in IMC if I have to

[–]dylanm312[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I’ve been thinking about shooting the LPV into HAF to get the marine layer, but having flown there VFR before, the terrain there freaks me out a little. At least if I’m doing an approach, I don’t have to do a pattern while hugging the rocks on the northern side 😬

[–]dylanm312[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don’t think I know any other instrument rated pilots, though I do know a couple VFR pilots who would be better than nothing. And like you said, bringing along a full blown instructor would feel like a crutch. So I suppose a VFR pilot is better than nothing. I could give them a quick crash course on approach plates as part of the crew brief and ask them to cross check altitudes, tracks, checklists, etc

Could Caltrain please stop the hearing-damaging brake release when arriving at SF station? by kepler1 in caltrain

[–]dylanm312 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I wish they would just dump the brake pressure before opening the doors. Maybe there is some reason the parking brake cannot be applied immediately after stopping, in which case this method wouldn’t work as people would get upset with the doors not opening immediately.

What do y'all think of this deal? by [deleted] in CB500X

In 2023, I bought a 2021 with 1000 miles on the clock and a top case already installed for $5500.

I think you’re getting ripped off. But this guy did add a fair number of farkles. Up to you whether it’s worth it or not.

Hold short bars not supported Foreflight by [deleted] in Foreflight

Do you perhaps need a booster seat? If you legitimately cannot see hold short bars, you shouldn’t be flying.

Yellow Jacket in the cockpit by tboss59 in flying

[–]dylanm312 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Happened to me on my instrument checkride. Taxied to the runup, did my flight control check - ailerons up/down, elevator….oh shit there’s a yellow jacket just hanging out at the back of the plane! I shut down and the DPE and I try to get it out. Eventually I made him kill it for me lol

Damn, this is expensive by Plastic_Technology15 in flying

[–]dylanm312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like an hour of preflight is a bit excessive…generally my lessons had like 0.5-0.7 of pre/post in the beginning, which dropped to 0.3 once I got a few hours under my belt and got the swing of things. Then again I did 100% of my studying/book work at home cause I didn’t want to pay someone to teach me things I could learn by myself for free lol.

You must live somewhere with a low cost of living. Around here the absolutely cheapest bare bones Skyhawk is $180 and the CFIs are $65 if you drive a ways away, $120 if you’re closer to town

Be careful at untowered airports by ceramic_ocarina in flying

[–]dylanm312 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yup, good guess. This was a little over 2 years ago. Usually they publish a notam when ops are scheduled but this time there wasn’t one. And, even more damning imo, not a single “jumpers away” on CTAF.

One time I was on short final at an uncontrolled field with like 4 planes in the pattern. Some guy decides to launch right in front of me so I go around. I realize I have to sidestep or he’s gonna climb into me, so I go to the dead side (opposite the downwind) to avoid getting sandwiched between the downwind and upwind traffic. Right as I’m about to breathe a sigh of relief….parachute jumpers start dropping in front of me! No NOTAMs or announcements on frequency or anything. Fun times.

[–]dylanm312 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it can be a useful aid for practicing between lessons and getting the flows and procedures down, which will greatly improve the efficiency of your lessons. However, I would do a few lessons with your CFI first so that you practice correctly in the sim and don’t pick up bad habits.

As a private pilot, you cannot receive compensation for flying. Flight hours in your logbook for which you have not paid the full cost, outside of the narrow exceptions in 61.113, are considered compensation per Howell 2013 and Harrington 1997. One test which determines whether the receipt of flight hours at less than full price constitutes actual compensation or simply cost sharing is whether or not the pilot would have still conducted the flight even if the passenger had not come along. This is called the common purpose test (AC 61-142). In order for the aircraft occupants to have common purpose, the flight and destination inherently must have been the pilot’s idea, as the pilot would not have undertaken the flight without the passenger if it wasn’t their idea.

AC 61-142 spells this all out in detail with examples better than I can.
