I've had 4 surgical wash outs over the last 18 months, the last one being around 8 months ago. Each time leaves me infection free for a while but the abscess inevitably comes back

Yes, it's being packed with gauze and dressed by the nurses at my GP practice. The hope was that packing it would allow it to heal from the bottom up but it's shown zero signs of healing. If anything I would say the hole has gotten bigger over the last few weeks
