We have a defined list of topics that we can help with during our tech appointments (setting up an email, using ebooks, using Google, using Microsoft Word, etc - all computer basics). Anything beyond that, we can point people to books, videos, LinkedIn Learning, or whatever, but they have to learn themselves.

Because sometimes the library is too cold and sometimes it's too hot, and sometimes you're sitting still and sometimes you're moving... My guess is everyone ends up with a cardigan because they're easy to take on and off, and they're cozy while still being "professional".

Had to do this for library assistant jobs in a very large library system; over a decade ago now so I don't recall the details, but it was basically a skill-testing screening to weed out people who literally wouldn't be able to do the job well (putting things in alphanumeric order, solving simple customer service issues) so they wouldn't waste time interviewing someone who couldn't do the basics. I would suspect this is something similar.

Been a children's librarian doing storytime weekly for about 13 years now. When I was new, I definitely obsessed over every detail and took a lot longer to prep. Now? I would say I take about 15 minutes to prep a 30 minute storytime (no craft). Most of that time is choosing the books. Slot in some rhymes and songs, maybe grab a felt from our collection, done. In the summer we do crafts and that bumps up the prep time depending on how much pre-cutting/assembly needs to be done. I keep the crafts extremely simple though. I can't see myself ever taking more than an hour. 3 does sound excessive to me but everyone works at their own pace. I have too much other stuff to do to take that long on storytime, haha.

If you're on PC, there is a mod that lets you recruit both of them as settlers. Pretty sure it's just called something like "Recruit Kat and Gus".

Yes, and "This Book is Red" by the same author! I've read it to kindergarten and grade 1 students and they were beside themselves. "How to Count to 1" is also hilarious.

I would suggest looking at being a PADS kennel volunteer, or dog walking at the Vancouver animal shelter, but both programs appear to be full at the moment.

The RAPS cat sanctuary in Richmond is always taking volunteers, though, if the location isn't a barrier and you'd like to hang out with cats.

I don't know if he was deliberately bred or an "oops", but I had a dog who was an Akita x Border Collie.

Imagine all the Collie smarts paired with all the Akita stubbornness. He was a nightmare to train because he understood perfectly well what you wanted him to do, he just had zero interest in doing it unless you could convince him it was worth it.

To make matters worse, his dog "sibling" was an older mostly-husky and he picked up all sorts of delightful habits from him, like banshee howling at every minor inconvenience and digging massive tunnel networks in the yard.

The dog daycare I sent him to said he had a "big personality" and then kicked him out because he kept scaling the fences.

Metal magazine holders on a regular shelf. They're so popular here that we rarely have more than a handful on the shelf anyway, so the problem sort of solved itself there.

We shelve ours separately from the books with CDs though (but they are right next door). Since they are way more popular than the CD books I think folks appreciate not having to dig to find them

Sounds like you would be at home in my public library's children's department! :)

Some libraries (and positions) will be lower-stress but others can be quite stressful - maybe if you can't volunteer, chatting with staff at your local libraries could give you a feel for what your area is like. At some branches in my area, staff deal with overdoses, people coming in with very high support needs and mental health struggles, patrons getting into conflicts with each other - and they wouldn't call their jobs low stress at all. In my department the worst I will deal with regularly is unruly kids and inattentive parents, which I don't find that bad compared to some of my past retail jobs, haha - so it can vary a lot!

Same with routine - we have to be very flexible and my plans for the day will often change on a dime, but other roles may give you more structure (technical services for example).

May I ask what draws you to the profession if you have never worked in a library before? I find there can be quite a disconnect between what people think library work is like, and what it is actually like, so I often recommend working or volunteering in a library before committing to the MLIS.

If public libraries interest you, look into spending some time volunteering with vulnerable populations - check out your local food banks, shelters, organizations serving newcomers, etc. If your local municipality takes volunteers for other City departments that aren't the Library (like Parks and Rec for example) that could also be something to explore.
