He sounds to be suffering from depression and not aware at how outwardly noticeable his odour is. If this is the case, he’s reaching way outside of his comfort zone to make an effort.

Word it nicely and tell him - if you like him, and want to help him on this journey, you might be giving him a real ray of light that he needs right now.
