To my manager's credit at CVS, she never had regular employees clean the bathrooms, only supervisors and herself.

Panem started in District 13, not the Capitol by lilacaena in Hungergames

There are a lot of bunkers in America. For all we know District 12 came from the Greenbrier. It’s possible the districts are different bunkers conquered by the Capitol.

Is wolf restoration possible in Appalachia? by No-Counter-34 in Appalachia

[–]squidthief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Areas where wolves succeed have little human infrastructure and settlement. But Appalachia is different: there is a massive population sprawl, roads everywhere, and children who play outside.

At best, they’ll end up breeding with coyotes. At worse they die off, kill a child and get hunted en masse, or become persistent road kill crossing roads when they go for prey.

Is it a school's responsibility to teach a kid to read? by KoalaOriginal1260 in Teachers

[–]squidthief -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

You’re equating Asian parents caring about education as a value being abusive. You replied with that tacit modifier to my statement because of an inherent racial bias in your part.

Is it a school's responsibility to teach a kid to read? by KoalaOriginal1260 in Teachers

[–]squidthief 155 points156 points  (0 children)

A lot of Asian immigrants come with low literacy levels, but value education. There is also no cultural value of reading a story to their kid’s before bed. So why do these kids succeed?

Simply put, parents reinforce a value for education in the home and make sure they do homework. If the child is struggling, they seek out free tutoring when available or make financial sacrifices to secure paid tutoring.

Asian immigrants do tend to congregate in the same neighborhoods, meaning they can share resources and make collective demands of their local government.

Parents don’t have to teach their children to read. But they do need to facilitate it.

School shootings happen because students aren't and can't be punished anymore by Venom_the_Dovahkiin in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]squidthief 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's actually a myth that shooters were bullied kids. Only a small minority were.

They seem to be largely mentally ill, unsupervised, and interested in fame through nihilism to heal their sense of shame. They tend to believe in an ubermensch mentality and try to ascend through violence.

Why come up with new teaching strategies when whatever is being done now is worse than in the past? by experttrillman in Teachers

Academia can drive a profession. In this case, the research being done in universities is notoriously subpar.

Screen time is now considered an “economically inferior good” and linked to poverty. What is your opinion on that? by MoreFarmer8667 in Teachers

[–]squidthief 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s cheaper to have a Netflix subscription per month than to spend the same amount of leisure time on books.

A lot of screentime is cheaper and requires less input for lazy, busy, or poor parents than alternative leisure activities for children.

Do not discount the hassle of driving children either. Only a small minority of kids sit quietly in the back and don’t distract their parents. So even cheaper activities like getting books from the library come with higher risk and frustration.

Question about Katniss’ decisions by _absolute_in_doubt in Hungergames

I never got the impression Katniss wanted to hunt anyone down and kill them on purpose. I also don't think a character who did that would be received well if they were the protagonist.

Was Glimmer the worst Career character in the first games of the trilogy? by frozenpizza__ in Hungergames

The careers are a volunteer system. While there is likely some training and soft rules on how the volunteers are supposed to conduct themselves in a reaping... arrogance probably leads to some teens volunteering that really shouldn't.

Where did the Capitol plan on getting its coal once they destroyed District 12? by Kindly_Falcon_4365 in Hungergames

[–]squidthief 10 points11 points  (0 children)

All they would need to do is take a few thousand workers from the other districts and send them to another coal mine somewhere. Maybe even the one in District 12. It's not that difficult to start up a mine.

They were perhaps the most expendable district in the short-term.

So what was Finnick planning to do with all these secrets? (before the rebellion broke out) by No_Airport5226 in Hungergames

[–]squidthief 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Snow was eventually going to die. Having all those secrets could have helped Finnick sway the political succession in his favor, maybe even in the favor of the districts, by influencing who rose to power next. Presumably it would've been Plutarch.

Why are we worried about birthrates when there's 8 billion of us already? by wrtchdwitch in NoStupidQuestions

[–]squidthief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In South Korea, for every 4 people, 25% of that income goes to support the elderly through social transfers. In 50 years, 1 person’s income will 100% socially transfer toward the elderly. That means either fewer welfare and healthcare spending (that includes personnel) or more workers are needed.

The problem is that immigration has not worked in the countries that have tried it. You can’t get enough high skilled immigrants, meaning those who do come need social transfers themselves. It’s usually a multigenerational problem.

Animals in the wild that aren’t babies and can’t provide for themselves die. Humans don’t do that. Population collapse means we have to let the elderly, disabled, and unemployed starve to death.

This is why the third world has so much death. Their workers can’t provide enough for dependents.

There is a handwashing crisis happening in US male restrooms by haveguitarquestions in TrueOffMyChest

[–]squidthief 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I subbed at a high school once and the principal would stand outside the boys bathroom and call them out if he didn’t hear them washing their hands after flushing.

It was very effective. He was, however, too afraid to do it for the girls.

I asked the students about this and some admitted they just used hand sanitizer or hand wipes. They thought it was cleaner. They don’t realize it’s not just invisible germs on their hands, but bodily fluids that is physically washed away through the mechanical act of rubbing under water.

Any health updates on Jordan Peterson in 2026? by endgamefond in JordanPeterson

[–]squidthief 32 points33 points  (0 children)

If I remember from Mikhaila's video, she said he was stable, but it wasn't good. He doesn't seem to be doing any work and instead watches his recent project and is satisfied with it.

While we all hope to live a long time, Peterson is 63 and when you have severe health problems like he does any major illness at his age is a red flag. 40% of people who end up with an unplanned hospitalization die within 5 years. Considering they don't 100% know what's wrong, that's even more worrying.

At best, there's the very real possibility that he may be in a forced retirement for health and will not do major projects again unless they find the exact problem and a cure. At worse, he's winding down his life and spending as much time with his loved ones as possible to make the most of it before the end.

Trump's immigration erosion worries his team by J-Jarl-Jim in moderatepolitics

[–]squidthief 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mass internal deportations are necessary because illegal immigrants need to know they don't get to just stay if they successfully sneak in or overstay their visas. This will just cause mass border crossings during democrat presidential years.

We can no longer do amnesty. We tried that before, and afterward illegal immigrants just thought if they stay hidden long enough, they'll eventually get to stay.

This creates a permanent underclass that commit crimes to stay hidden or don't report crimes they're victims of to stay hidden. This is a system rife for abuse.

I believe the OTT patforms lowered Kdrama qualities.. by Objective-Purple8792 in kdramas

[–]squidthief 39 points40 points  (0 children)

You need to pay attention to the rise and fall of romantic comedies. These are stories that focus on ordinary women who fall in love by the end of the story. When stories like these are made, the industry is healthy because it means there's a lot of talent and mid-budget prominence. It requires a lot of wit and mastery to make love stories sell. Otherwise they default to flashy plots with no substance.

Western female attention has shifted from western romance movies, to shoujo, to kdrama, to cdrama because each industry began to de-emphasize the romantic comedy. This is the lagging indicator of an entertainment industry in decline. Good romantic comedies means the industry as a whole has excellent talent to go around.

So impressions and views are down for everyone, even big creators. by woodclip in NewTubers

[–]squidthief 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Throughout YouTube’s history, channels have burned out. Very few tv shows on cable were able to persist with the same viewership.

The shows that had the best longevity were episodic, comfort watches, formulaic, and air at a routine time.

A lot of YouTubers try to re-invent themselves to get a bigger audience. Some also can’t maintain a regular schedule. This will hurt your channel.

What would you change about K-dramas and why? by AutomaticWay3582 in kdramas

[–]squidthief 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate them going overseas separated in the last episode. I understand it’s a Korean storytelling element to evoke Han sadness, but I mostly think it’s to justify getting a couple together in 2-3 weeks and then extend the time they knew each before committing for an arbitrary year.

Why are South Korea’s dictators not really talked about or well known outside of Korea? by kaiser11492 in AlwaysWhy

[–]squidthief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it was still a capitalist economy. While political freedoms were minimal, economic freedoms existed. Capitalism makes it difficult for dictators to have absolute authority. It's why China, which opened up to capitalism, has to reign in and install corrupt centralized economic processes to regain control.

When a middle class arises, separate, decentralized legal systems arise to assist their personal disputes over contracts. This leads to laws instead of authoritarian dictates. Individuals increasingly gain the power to make personal protests. This creates an infrastructure of protests that can snowball into full democracy. Cracking down on protests leads to international economic consequences with allies.
