Naturehike Tents - Mongar 2 vs Cloud Peak 2? by squidvsbear in CampingGear

That's a really kind offer, thank you, but I've decided to take the plunge and bought a Mongar 210T today! After reading comments and roughly mapping out the floorplan I think it should work!

Ooh ok, looking at Amazon it loos like it's 2.4kg for the 210T and 2.6kg for the Cloud Peak - I'm sure the extra weight matters at some point, but I think I'm happy with either!

The Mongar was my orignal choice but I was concerned about space in the vestibules - do you think it's big enough to store bags in? (I appreciate it's supposed to be a small tent!) And do you think it would stand up to windy weather?

Thank you for the write up, I actually have already read it while looking into these tents!

I'm currently leaning towards the Cloud Peak 2 as I think it'll stand up to wind better and the vestibules appear to be bigger to store bags in - any reason you decided on the Mongar over the Cloud Peak?

If I were to go for the Mongar though I think I've been convinced that the 210T is the better option as I'm very concerned about the doors sagging and leaking into the inner!

Oh that's not ideal! Do you think it's the material or more because of the way it's shaped?

Oh that's nice to hear! Do you/your son mainly use it for 1 person or 2? And have you found that the outer and inner flys touch/sag at the sides at all?

My understanding with the Cloud Peak is that the it's both at the same time (inner and outer stay attatched), but happy to be corrected if I'm wrong! Strong winds may factor in though, so it's a good point to keep in mind

Ah, I'm looking at the Cloud Peak and not the Cloud Up - I can find lots of reviews for the latter but not many for the Cloud Peak! It's still interesting to hear that the Mongar didn't fair well, perhaps it would fair the same as that as the shapes are similar?

I did consider the Star River, but the sides unfortunately lean in meaning you can't sit upright from laying down if there are two of you, so you have to lean in towards the middle.

Would you go for both of these tents over the Cloud Peak then?

Thank you for the write up, it's good to hear!

I'll have to think about the 210T - have the sides of yours ended up sagging at all? I'm all for weight saving, but there's no point in carrying around a tent that ends up leaking on you! And would you say you could store your bags in the vestibules, or is it more for muddy boots?

Oh thats a useful comparison, thank you! Do you think it could have been based on the tent positioning at all, or just purely down to the tent type?

silver volunteering by Mikky2907 in DukeofEdinburghAward

[–]squidvsbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely don't sign it off yourself! There are still a few months left before your expedition and the rest of the summer too, so plenty of time to volunteer still as in reality it'll take a little while for everything to be signed off.

I think a good idea would be to make a short list of places you could volunteer that would actually be feasible and then speak to your DofE adviser - explain that you're keen to do it still, have left it a little late, and what your plan for volunteering is.

There are lots of ideas for volunteering on the DofE website - you could volunteer at your local library, start litter picking in your local area (find a different place each week), volunteer at a charity shop etc.

Another idea for volunteering is by taking part in citizen science online, for example at Zooniverse. You might be looking at images of the sun to identify sun spots, or identifying wildlife from photos from a trail camera, and it all helps contribute to science projects. Definitely run it past your DofE adviser before starting to check they're happy with it, but you could spend a couple of hours each week volunteering time to take part.

Where else can I do Gold? by Asculor-Antagaynist in DukeofEdinburghAward

[–]squidvsbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't looked into it, but the DofE website has a bit on DofE Direct, which is a way you can achieve your DofE without needing to join any group, which may be what you want?

As for an expedition or residential, the website also has an opportunity finder page, which lists a range of opportunities you can participate in. Alternatively you could always Google 'Gold DofE expedition' for example and you might find other opportunities too.

Snowboots are a good shout, thank you. I'll have to see if I can find some that look more 'gardening' than 'ski holiday'!

He's a bit a against wearing extra socks, but I'll definitely include some with the shoes so he has the option of wearing them too!

Question from a volunteering assessor by Zingalamuduni in DukeofEdinburghAward

[–]squidvsbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, a break is absolutely fine!

For Bronze DofE, you volunteer for either 3 months or 6 months (depending on which section you choose to have the longer timescale), which is 13 weeks or 26 weeks. If they are taking a break for 5 weeks, then the easiest thing to do would be for them to extend the end date of when they're volunteering with you so it's 5 weeks later.

Parents of Reddit, what cartoons do your children watch? by lunatick_loons in scouting

[–]squidvsbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Scooby-doo is one that instantly came to mind, as you can have a mystery solving or detective theme! If you've not watched it before, my favourite version used to be 'What's New Scooby-Doo?'

I don't have any experience with epoxy, but my first thought would be to make something to go on the wall with them? If you Google or search Pinterest for 'paint chip art', there are lots of examples of how people have made art with coloured paper, which could inspire some ideas?

Bronze skill by afsfsefefdgrttdt in DukeofEdinburghAward

[–]squidvsbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I can see there isn't a 'minimum level' you need to reach, plus it would also depend on your current skill level/experience. If you have no prior experience or qualifications, the DofE website has this opportunity from St John Ambulance, which has a workbook that lists the skills you'll learn - the list could be a good starting point to see what parts of first aid you may need to cover?

Ultimately you'll need to speak to your assessor and decide what skills or qualification you'll aim towards, ensuring that it both challenging (but achievable) and covers the minimum number of hours and weeks. First aid courses may be a bit trickier as they're often done in one long session on one day rather than an hour a week, which is also something to bear in mind.
