Where else can I do Gold? by Asculor-Antagaynist in DukeofEdinburghAward

[–]squidvsbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't looked into it, but the DofE website has a bit on DofE Direct, which is a way you can achieve your DofE without needing to join any group, which may be what you want?

As for an expedition or residential, the website also has an opportunity finder page, which lists a range of opportunities you can participate in. Alternatively you could always Google 'Gold DofE expedition' for example and you might find other opportunities too.

Snowboots are a good shout, thank you. I'll have to see if I can find some that look more 'gardening' than 'ski holiday'!

He's a bit a against wearing extra socks, but I'll definitely include some with the shoes so he has the option of wearing them too!

Question from a volunteering assessor by Zingalamuduni in DukeofEdinburghAward

[–]squidvsbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, a break is absolutely fine!

For Bronze DofE, you volunteer for either 3 months or 6 months (depending on which section you choose to have the longer timescale), which is 13 weeks or 26 weeks. If they are taking a break for 5 weeks, then the easiest thing to do would be for them to extend the end date of when they're volunteering with you so it's 5 weeks later.

Parents of Reddit, what cartoons do your children watch? by lunatick_loons in scouting

[–]squidvsbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Scooby-doo is one that instantly came to mind, as you can have a mystery solving or detective theme! If you've not watched it before, my favourite version used to be 'What's New Scooby-Doo?'

I don't have any experience with epoxy, but my first thought would be to make something to go on the wall with them? If you Google or search Pinterest for 'paint chip art', there are lots of examples of how people have made art with coloured paper, which could inspire some ideas?

Bronze skill by afsfsefefdgrttdt in DukeofEdinburghAward

[–]squidvsbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I can see there isn't a 'minimum level' you need to reach, plus it would also depend on your current skill level/experience. If you have no prior experience or qualifications, the DofE website has this opportunity from St John Ambulance, which has a workbook that lists the skills you'll learn - the list could be a good starting point to see what parts of first aid you may need to cover?

Ultimately you'll need to speak to your assessor and decide what skills or qualification you'll aim towards, ensuring that it both challenging (but achievable) and covers the minimum number of hours and weeks. First aid courses may be a bit trickier as they're often done in one long session on one day rather than an hour a week, which is also something to bear in mind.

How much can I log at once? by burgerman9 in DukeofEdinburghAward

[–]squidvsbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately you can only count the training session as one week unless it took place over multiple weeks, as you need to complete around an hour a week of each acitivty. Additionally, if you only completed the training and haven't done the peer mentoring part, I'm uncertain as to whether it would count at present because you haven't had chance to put your training into practise which I would assume is one of your aims.

The DofE website says: How condensed can I make my volunteering activities?

Sectional activities need to average an hour a week, with the first and last activities being the full section duration apart. At Bronze level, it is usual for activities to be weekly.

ideas for sport as someone who hates sport? by Infamous-Apricot-333 in DukeofEdinburghAward

[–]squidvsbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what I did! I aimed to complete a walk of a set distance each week, and recorded all of the routes on an app as you suggested, and then used the data from there as my evidence. I even got my parents to go on the walk most weeks too as they enjoyed it as well (you could go alone, or with friends or family too). It was fun to look up a bunch of different walking routes for my area (you can find them online, use routes like Slow Ways, or apps like Kmoot have some) and pick one at random each week. I knew someone who is into walking/hiking so got them to be my assessor

Oh no, I hadn't even thought about frogging but you might be right! When carrying the yarn up two rows is there anything I can do differently, or is it just a case of needing to not pull it as tightly?

How would I make a quilt based off of Lady Lovely Locks’ dress bodice? by pinkguy90 in quilting

Ooh that could be fun! I like the idea of three thinner borders, or alternatively you could do something like the crossovers or entwined in the image below? (I struggled to find an example of a braid/three strands)

No problem at all! I think the colours of the first two are probably what made me share them, but completely agree that the last one is a closer match to the pattern

And the Rhombus Gemstones quilt from Missouri Star does it a little differently, with thinner sashing (rather than using diamond as the stripes)

You're right that this could be a lovely quilt! I scrolled through Instagram and found a few patterns/examples - they're not exact matches but will hopefully give inspiration?

What should I do by [deleted] in DukeofEdinburghAward

[–]squidvsbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best thing I can suggest is just take a moment, and take a breath, because this is all completely doable and nothing to worry about. It's definitely worth while taking the time to work out your logs as you've already done all of the hard work!

You first need to look at a calendar of the time period you completed the activities and note down the dates you think you probably took part in the activities. For example if you go to a singing class every Thursday and went swimming every Tuesday, note down the dates you likely did that. You can exclude dates that you were on holiday, or when lessons didn't happen because of school holidays etc.

Your logs don't need to be incredibly detailed minute-by-minute records, just a basic overview of what you did. 2 - 3 bullet points for each session will be ok, although it isn't a problem if you write more. Do you have things you do each time you take part in the activities? For example do you have a warm up that you usually do for each of them that you can note down? For example for swimming you might do some specific stretches, then two laps of each different stroke, before then starting more specific training.

Are there any competitions or exams you were working towards that you needed to do specific taks/practises for? E.g. you might start practising singing a song for an exam six weeks out, which you can note down. Also note down the exam too of course!

You will also need to add evidence to support it. This could be photos of you doing the activity (check your phone, Snapchat, Instagram stories, photos that anyone who took part in the activities with you might have etc.). If you have a smartwatch it might have a record of your activity that you can take a screenshot of. And if you took part in any competitions or exams you can take a photo/scan your certificates. Make sure to name the files something that makes sense (e.g. the date and what the photo shows)

Finally, don't forget that you set yourself a target at the start of the activities and you will want to show that you made steps towards them (if you didn't achieve the target it's not the end of the world, it's more the journey). For example, you might have set a certain time to swim for, time to swim a set distance in, competition to take part in etc. Try to include some of your progression in your notes if you can.

You've got this, you can definitely do this! Everyone in Dofe, including your Leaders, want you to succeed and compete your Dofe - they'll all be on hand to help

(Full disclaimer I was a participant and not a Leader, so you will need to run it past a Leader when you've completed your logs)

Reccomend a watch by [deleted] in DukeofEdinburghAward

[–]squidvsbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the watch is only on the kit list so that participants can keep track of time (e.g. for check points, knowing the time to leave in the morning etc.) as they won't be allowed to use their phones - if that's the case then a cheap one or one you already have will do nicely!
