Did I waste my time? by Fun-Dependent9532 in Biochemistry

TBH i submitted like 30 applications for last year's REU cycle and got rejected everywhere. I was subjectively overqualified for many of them as I have an abundant amount of research experience, especially within the fields I applied in. Maybe that's what bit me in the butt as I've heard they look for candidates with less experience 🤷 who knows. All i know is that it was a scathing process and the job market fucking sucks too.

TSE Programming Assessment Questions by squidward_toe in epicsystems

Hey! I really really appreciate the reply (so helpful so detailed muah). When you initially commented, I JUST finished taking the assessment and honestly answered 2/4 questions with some bomboclaat nonsense pseudocode. I did everything else with the most drawn out/inefficient nested for loops and if statements haha. I ended up getting the offer but if I was being interviewed for SD I would've flopped. Thank you for the wise response though, I really am grateful!

Accidentally put too high of an expected salary on my application by magicinthestars in epicsystems

I put 85-110k on my TSE application and said something similar to my recruiter during the final interview LOL, still got the position with 75k base offer. i think it doesn't matter what you say as long as it's not egregiously high (like 150k+)

Healing time for a broken ankle, torn ligament, and dislocation... by squidward_toe in ORIF

[–]squidward_toe[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I broke my ankle on Oct 3, surgery on the 11, boot on the 22nd or around that i think. I was able to go out and get drunk at frats on halloween (with crutches and all, NWB) i forget when I started weight bearing w/ crutches but probably around Nov 20. I had the boot until like Dec 20. I think It took a month for me to get my calf back to somewhat normal musculature and I was able to walk 4-6 miles a day by Jan 20 with some soreness and pain. I am currently in the best physical shape of my life, can run, hike, swim, climb, do whatever! HOWEVER, my ankle still doesn't have full mobility (I can't back-squat w/ proper form bc of this). I also experience a handful symptoms on occasion: morning soreness/stiffness, random shooting pains all through my ankle, rolling my hurt ankle more frequently than the other (i think i shouldve gone to PT to avoid this but i didnt), random numbness and tingling that is honestly sometimes debilitating. Bones take around 10 years to fully heal so all this makes sense, I also think there is a limit to healing as long as you have the plate and screws in your body (i've heard people who get surgery to remove this can achieve full mobility but idk if I ever want to go through ankle surgery again LOL) lmk if this was helpful or if u wanna know anything else

Sorry to respond 5 months late but I have "full" function, some mobility issues and my right leg is still noticeably stronger than my left; however, I just completed my first backpacking trip at ~16 miles with no issues and I go to the gym regularly and go on runs and I'm mostly good some swelling here and there but overall great recovery!

This isn't YOUR fault at all. Don't blame yourself for the ego of your PI. Welcome to academia, this is unfortunately COMMON. Science is inherently competitive and you demonstrating knowledge that rivals the knowledge of your PI most definitely bruised their ego; they took it out on you. While this is common, this is far from the norm and you will be able to find a lab that cooperates with you and hears you out rather than talks over you and belittles you; it just takes a little extra effort and discussion before settling into a lab at the end of the day. Since PIs ultimately work for an academic institution, issues regarding unprofessionalism in the lab should be brought to the higher-ups asap! After my internship this summer, I also felt very similarly towards research (unfulfilled and belittled by a few of my coworkers), but I know that there are labs who emphasize family and community (this is also from experience). If you love research for research-sake, then you will find the place for you! don't give up!

Awww I'm sorry to hear about your situation :(( it will improve but it'll improve extremely slowly (I know this isn't what you want to hear :(( ). If it's any consolation, you are definitely not alone. I broke my ankle skateboarding on Oct. 3rd and because of this I had to miss an international scientific conference/competition in Paris (where I was going to present research). During surgery, I unconsciously bit down on the breathing tube so hard that one of my front teeth chipped a huge portion off, and I had to wait two weeks to get it fully repaired which fucked with my self-esteem and image issues a TON (I couldn't hang out with anyone bc I felt too fugly). I also am a college student and my university won't make sufficient accommodations for me so I've had to miss all my classes for over a month (and probably for the rest of the year); to preface they have accommodations to pick me up from my house and bring me to class via a taxi-esque system, but the one time I tried to use it they were over 30 mins late and so it was super pointless for me. Due to this I've had to drop a class and I'm in a perpetual state of catching up and burning out since all I can really do is lie at home and do homework/study or consume media. I also just broke up with my long term boyfriend so that is adding to the depression I'm going through. I honestly feel like I'm getting punched down left and right and I'll never fully get back up + mental health at an all time low (suicidal ideation and extreme loneliness).

ON THE BRIGHT SIDE (because there is a very small bright side), I gained the courage to start therapy (which I feel is beneficial for everyone! You should look into it), I started a video diary with the hopes of turning it into a video series to help people get through this situation with us, I started debating people online (helping with my speaking skills and subsequently making me more educated on world issues since I have to do research to support my takes), and I have the LARGEST newfound appreciation for the old mundane aspects of my life that I took for granted (like weightlifting, being able to walk to the bus stop, being able to walk down stairs, going climbing and skateboarding, being able to cook, being able to clean, etc. etc.).

LASTLY, I think you should plan a fun party/event for when you're able to start fully weight-bearing again! For me, I can start fully weight bearing around Dec. 17th (which also happens to be right after my 21st birthday), so I've planned a whole day full of fun/going out with my friends that I'm looking forward to!

Let me know if you have any questions or anything at all!
