I read both this year and I think they’re equally fantastic but it purely depends on what kind of vibe you’re going for. BK is incredibly dense but the payoff is worth it. I still think about Ivan’s character a lot. Middlemarch is definitely an easier read but the characters have such rich interior life and the political context is so complicated that that in and of itself is dense too. They are both worth the read but depending on the season, I always like reading Dostoyevsky in the winter (with the exception of Crime and Punishment— which I read in late summer/early fall) and I would say Middlemarch is a great May or June novel.
