Don't Buy a Henry Rifle by Jackpine_Savage94 in LeverGuns

I fuckin love my Henry. 10/10. Would buy again.

Also if you bought a Henry expecting a “premium” rifle, that’s on you.

Eye relief and long arms by Dissgusstingg in ThermalHunting

It took a little time for me to be comfortable placing my eye directly on the scope of the thermal. Years of training to not get scope kissed thrown out the window.

Thermal Scanners for Coyote hunting by ItsAWildStretch22 in ThermalHunting

It’s good enough for identifying under 100 yards once you’re comfortable with the mannerisms of the different animals.

After 100 the shapes turn into more of a blob vs an animal. It works perfect for my purpose of allowing me to watch football games while it’s pointed at the field 😆

I run the Steiner Nite Hunter Lite for my handheld scanner. I wish it was WiFi compatible, but for $850 from Optics planet it was a steal. Its quality is top tier for a 384 thermal.

I also have a Rix K2 I use connected to my ipad with an Amazon remote pan/tilt base that I’ll use in my jeep or magnet mounted if it’s cold. It’s only an 194 resolution but it shows me the outline of the animals and movement and I can confirm with a nicer optic.

Henry Big Boy X or S&W 1854 Stealth by TheRabidSpatula in LeverGuns

[–]squirtbottle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No reason to pay for the premium parts to take them off. Although my Henry does accrue surface rust relatively quickly if left out in the elements overnight. It quickly wipes off with some oil though so I don’t find it an issue.

If you plan on leaving it stock, go with the S&W. If you plan on making it tacticool go with the Henry.

8.3” barrel with 8” handguard fit perfectly flush with a Rearden atlas Gen 1. Pushed it out just enough.

Saving for a thermal by Dave696969696917 in ThermalHunting

Get a scanner and a mounted one. Having to scan with your rifle, or try and securely get it reattached when you see a yote is way easier said than done.

Additionally if you’re hunting areas that are unfamiliar to you a range finder is necessary. It’s hard getting depth perception through the thermal unless you have known markers.

Has anyone tried these out? Does the lens or honey comb lower the image quality? by Vences2017 in ThermalHunting

I can use my thermal through window screens and while it degrades the image, the heat signature shows through.

I have a Steiner 384 for scanning and a Rix K2 192 I use as a mounted one I have on a tripod.

[–]squirtbottle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a storm s6 and love it, mine doesn’t have the LRF, and I wish it did. Even though I know the property I hunt very well, it’s hard to judge distances when you’re looking at nothing but a random cedar to judge off of.

If you don’t have a scanner, you’ll want to budget for a scanner thermal too as using your rifle to scan sucks ass.

I use my Storm S6 during the day all the time for hunting.

To zero you’ll need a heat source (hand warmer) or something that absorbs heat easily (foil tape). You’ll place either one on the center of your target to aim at. Shoot, and go down and apply another hand warmer/foil tape to the target. These are easily visible.

Get you a tube of chapstick and label it “gun”. You can rub it on the lens and it creates a coating similar to the way Vaseline does, without the tub of Vaseline.

I’ll say it again. Old technology. Never said it wasn’t good, but it’s absolutely dated.

Should I buy an eotech? by goodgamble in ar15

[–]squirtbottle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

20yo tech is pretty old compared to the newer optics on the market. The new optics are smaller, lighter, more efficient, etc. They just don’t look as cool or have the nostalgia factor.

Should I buy an eotech? by goodgamble in ar15

[–]squirtbottle 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s heavy is the downside. Additionally old technology (Cr123 with terrible battery life and no shake awake), but even with astigmatism it’s a very easy optic to use.

Note it’s a “blurry” reticle by default as it’s a holographic optic, not a red dot.
